Wk of Mar 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Mel - Congrats on your race. I'd go with your chip time, too.

Christa - Good luck in your tri!

NYcpa - sorry to hear about your foot. Hope everything works out.

Did I miss the order for the Dis-Penguin shirts? Haven't seen anything recently, so not sure if I missed it or not.

I'm still grounded. The knee is "slightly" better. I've been icing and keeping it elevated when I'm at home. Hoping it will heal itself. I'm trying to avoid a visit to the ortho. But I hate not getting any workouts in.

Terri

Well, I don't have a whol eof updating to do today, but HEY I did 3 miles again today. That's a plus, right!! Tomorrow is another 3 miles then I get to rest for a day!! Is it sad that I am already looking forward to my rest days?!

Dana

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

I don't have a lot to report today either. I had an easy workout on the treadmill last night. Just did 30 min and walked 2.08 miles. I ran 1 lap/mile at 5.0 and the rest I walked at 4.0. I'm trying to go easy on my legs a little this week because I've been having some aches and pains. So I thought I would decrease my mileage and speed a little this week (take a rest week). My "learn to run" program starts next week - so I don't want to get injured heading into that.

Well, yesterday was a rest day so not much to report there. Just xt around the house (cleaning) DS8 is wanting to do a kids tri now that I am training for one. The one he has been aiming for is in Sept. I have now found one closer to home & shorter in April. He is so excited. Its a 25 yd swim, 2 m bike & 1/2 m run. He can do all those distances now. No fair he would do a tri before me ;)

Jen-the weather can vary greatly for the marathon. A couple of years ago they were burning up at the finish. This year I put on a thick fleece sweatshirt after I finished. It turned cooooold on us. The clothes that get discarded, Disney picks up, cleans & donates them. Alot of people use old workout clothes or go to Salvation Army or something to have their "throw aways" I started out with 2 pr of pants on. The top pair were only $5 so I was going to throw them away. However, I say SIL at the Poly & gave them to her as I went by. I also had a tyvek jacket I bought at the expo that I threw away & in the early a.m. I wore a sweatshirt that I put in my bag I checked before the race. The finish line is fenced off. Really tall fence. There are bleachers there for spectators. I saw DH right as I crossed & then while I was going thru getting chip taken off, getting medal, water, etc they went to the family tent & I met up with them there. Very easy!

Cam-that picture is awesome :thumbsup2

Workout from last night -
TM work:
5 min - 3.7
20 min - 5.0
5 min - 3.7
7 min - 5.0 (3 miles)
3 min - 3.7
cool down - 5 minutes (total miles 3.37) ***during first mile had the incline set at .5 and mile 2 set at 1.00.***

V Twist (for abs) 10 reps each side, 3 sets
Push-ups using stability ball - 15 reps, 3 sets
Leg extension - 40 pounds, 12 reps, 3 sets
Seated leg curl - 25 pounds, 12 reps, 3 sets

Doing well with the fundraising for the Breast Cancer 5k - I have raised $50.00 so far :thumbsup2 . I'm going to continue to try and raise money....my goal is only $100.00 but I'm hoping to bring in more :) I'm not the greatest at fundraising but I'm trying.

Today, I ended up taking off from work to straighten things out with my allergy office.....I have to end treatment with them (just got too expensive) but when I called them yesterday they were so nasty to me. I told them that it just got too expensive, it's nothing about the way that they've treated me - no reason to get so nasty.

Well, anyhow wish me luck!

I still hope to catch up on everyone's posts today!

Have a good day everyone,

Jodi

Hi my name is Maggie and I haven't exercised in 5 days.

However, last Friday I did my Lr/w at a 4/2 and ran 3.2 miles at a 12 min/pace. It felt pretty good. I was running on the track.

I then flew to Philly for the weekend to visit my brother/nephew and survived the plane ride with a 2 an 4 year old. The boys were great travelers as always and we had a great weekend.

So, I know I can go the distance for my first 5K on 3/19, but I actually haven't ran outside yet. So I will be doing that this Monday because that is the only day I could get a babysitter.

Due to the knee pain (behind my knee) and some hip pain, last week I only xtrained all week then ran on friday. This week, I will do the same.

I really haven't cought up on the posts - I am way behind. So let me just say keep up the great work! I am proud to be part of this team. I am sure I would have given up if it wasn't for all of you.

Have a great day!
Maggie

(all together now) Hi Maggie :wave2:
Maggie - Don't worry too much about it. sometimes the legs really need a rest!

I'm totally contemplating a mulit-day running rest as the pain in my left booty is still there. I'm generally one who runs through aches and pains, but for some reason I feel like I need to lay off a bit. I have a sprint adventure race this weekend (girls only team) and a very hilly 26.6 training run in 3 weeks. The 50 miler is near the end of april and i'm thinking that i'll do better if i back off the high mileage to avoid injury than if i keep pushing out the miles and hurt my booty, which i'll need for the hills!

Hi, everyone! Sorry to hear about everyone's physical ailments. I am convinced that at this point, many of us are taking a beating on the unrelenting dreadmills and are probably pushing some limits on speed and distance. I still think our bodies send us very strong messages of when we are overdoing it and we should listen.

Kathy -- I hope your doctor finds a solution that lets you get around the World comfortably, and I know I have said this before, but PLEASE consider forcing yourself to take it easy by using an ECV or WC. You don't want to do further damage.

Jen -- I used an old pair of sweatpants and an oversized sweatshirt, a scarf and gloves and peeled off the sweatpants before we started (figured they'd be awkward to get over my shoes and waste precious time during the race). Within the first mile I'd peeled off the sweatshirt. I kept the scarf and gloves a bit longer. I certainly did NOT look fashionable, but I was warm! BTW, I think that this year at the start of the half it was about 40 degrees (though the weather channel had predicted 34) and I am not sure what it was by the time we finished, but still cool enough for a sweatshirt. We wandered around the parks the rest of that day in jeans and sweatshirts (and our medals, of course! :teeth: )

Oh, and we were walking at that point. We had just come around the corner from backstage, I think, and had taken each other's pictures with Chip & Dale and then come onto Main Street. I think, from that picture, that most people around us were walking at that point because of the crowds and just taking it all in. I'd like to think that by 2007 I'll be able to run down Main Street and hopefully, pull a "Craig" and still stop to hug our WISH supporters.

I did 50 minutes of strength training last night. I decreased the weight on all equipment and added another set of 8 so that I did 3x8 instead of 2x8 -- this stretched the workout a bit longer and I still felt like I was accomplishing something. Hoping to get to a yoga/pilates class tonight.

Hi Maggie :rotfl2:

MelR-- listen to your bootie (oops I mean body :lmao: ) and take the rest.

Mel-- I meant to post before Congrats on your AWSOME Half! :cheer2: Its too bad they only posted the clock time but both times are great.

Its supposed to be pretty warm today so I might do a gentle run outside at lunchtime.

I might be able to get on a team for this: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/1/1_85/280.shtml
Its a 200 mile race in 24 hours. Looks really fun.

And I just found out about this 5K right in my own home town, almost one of my own training runs! I signed up Paul, too. I'm going to have DS do the family run with me. http://www.burlingtonedfoundation.org/2006RoadRace.htm

My speedy friend from the gym might do the Run to Remember Half this weekend. But I won't be running with her if she does! I'm planning on slow and steady.

Sunny

Somebody....OPEN A WINDOW!

I need a place to toss out these assumptions that I have been operating under. :rolleyes2

I ASSUMED I was getting fit and in better shape since I am walking 5 days a week.

Well, I was wrong.

After my one hour riding lesson last night I realize I am NOT getting fit. I was huffing and puffing and just about dying up there on that horse. How totally pathetic. And OMG my legs!! The insides of my thighs are sooo sore today. And OK lets not even talk about my sitz bones. My old knee is screaming for mercy. I should be in a hot tub.

Obviously I am not doing enough. I can't believe how hard I was breathing just at a trot!

Ugh. :guilty:

Amy - Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. :goodvibes Don't you go getting all disappointed now because of one stinky run. Stretch that calf muscle. Maybe you need a massage! :teeth:

Dave - I don't think walking at 4.0 is all that easy. :thumbsup2 You're doing pretty darn good. Backing off a bit can't hurt though. Hey I just want to say I finished TKAM this morning. Well, not completely finished. I watched it thru the trial. Man, if got MUCH MUCH better. So much better in fact I was on the TM for 37 minutes before I even checked the time! I was that engrossed in the movie!

Maggie - Today is a new day. :flower3:

Cam - That picture is AWESOME! I hope you got an enlargement and framed it! BTW, did you find anyone to go with you????

Yesterday we had a manager's meeting and we were told we had to prepare a "Pandemic Flu" plan. :scared1: If we are all quarantined to our houses we need to be able to do our jobs. Talk about a depressing and upsetting discussion. I really don't even want to think about it.

I need some Disney Magic today. Heck, I need to be ON the Disney Magic today! :hyper:

Sunny When is this? Wouldn't it be fun to get a group of WISHers to do something like this? You, me, I am sure we could talk Melissa, her DH, and EC into it :lmao: ....Anyone else?

Mel - Such a great 1/2 time! I understand the 1 or 2 min thing. In the Charlotte marathon they had me listed at 4:25 and my watch (which I started when I crossed the start) said 4:24. It is only 1 min...but it made a diff for me too.

Melissa - I'm with Sunny :sunny: , listen to your bootie!

Hi Maggie...I am a slacker this week too. :rotfl2:
Trying to rest up for my tri...even though it is only a sprint. I am worried about T1 and T2...forgetting something, and someone hitting my goggles off during the swim.
Biked 40 min today then practiced T2 and ran about 1/2 a mile. I am trying not to do too much.
Lynne, Melissa, and any other tri geeks who have done a tri....any last minute suggestions?

Hi WISH Team!

I'm so glad to be reading of everyone's experiences good or bad. We all have those bad ones and I'm thinking it makes the good ones so much better.

Maggie, Your post got me to a chuckle. I NEED to respond to your previous post. Hi Maggie! My name is Lily and I haven't exercised in 2 days. Thanks to you I think I am saved. Tonight I will get to it.

Lynne, thanks so much for the article you posted. I have found it to be quite exact in my own experiences. Our ortho doc has been saying this forever to DH too.

Judy, you know I found out the hard way last year when I did bicycle to work a couple of times in the late summer that my training was lacking in all things. Here I was running my self all over the place all spring and summer and then comes the little 45 min bike ride (up hill both ways!) and I struggled. I wish there were some one thing that could be done to make us fit in all adventures we want to do.

I've run out of time just now. Hope to check in later...

I've been fighting a nasty cold for the last few days, so I didn't get to work out yesterday and don't think I will today.....hopefully I'll get on my TM tomorrow.

Oooooh, that does sound like a lot of fun. It would be great to have another chance to meet everyone and train together. I love the idea of a WISH team. Unfortunately, that's the same weekend as the Rochester Marathon, and I was going to do the 1/2 as a training run. However, if there really is a WISH team getting together - it would be fun to be a part of it. I might be a little slow for you all though.

I'm up for it. Seriously! As long as the runs aren't too long (i.e. marathon length)...I'll be into my Marathon training at that point and it might be a fun way to keep things fresh. I'll probably be up to 10 miles at that point. Not sure if I'd be a help or just a liability LOL. But if you need another runner this might be for me.

Plus....I LOVE New England  !! Lived in RI and CT for a number of years and spend as much time as I can in VT and NH! So this would certainly be super FUN for me!!!

Here's the official site for the 200 mile relay. Its in September. I'd love to do a WISH team! :Pinkbounc

Judy-- if its any consolation, we routinely talk about bio-chem attacks. :sad2:

I'm just back. It was a bit nippy to run without a jacket (I didn't plan ahead). So I did leg presses, lunges and stair mill instead.

Sunny

Sunny - (oh math genius) What would our average pace have to be to finish in 24 hrs?

Judy - You have to figure out how to work in case of a pandemic.......

What do you do for a living?

Judy:  Don't worry about it. Riding uses completely different muscles than running/jogging/walking does. ::yes:: And think of the correlation this way: horse's walk/jog is about the same aerobic workout as you walking, horse's working trot (posting or actively sitting) is about the same as you slow jogging, horse's canter/lope is about the same as you jogging, horse's gallop is about the same aerobic workout as you running/fast jogging. Can you tell I've had WAAAAy too much time to think this one over??? And as far as muscles go riding definitely works out your upper thighs where walking, jogging, and running NeveR do. On the upside, the more you ride the less sore you will be from it. And I agree you should use the hot tub to its fullest extent, or a really hot bath will do the trick. And can I come on the Disney Magic too???? :Pinkbounc Pretty please??? :upsidedow With a chocolate Mickey on top??? :mickeybar :stitch:

MelR: 200miles / 24hrs = 8.33 mph soooo 60 min / 8.33 mph = 7.2222 mpm wow that seems rather quick

Anywho I've had a pretty slow week. Did walk/jogs trying to get over this cold/get ready for the 5K.
