Wk of Mar 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Time Limits:
All teams must be able to complete the event within 34.5 hours from the time of their start.
this would be 5.8 mph pace or 10.35mpm pace

fyi:
The Reach The Beach (RTB) Relay is the longest running relay race in the United States. The RTB Relay will take place in picturesque New Hampshire during the start of the New England foliage season. The relay will consist of (a maximum of ) 12 person teams that will rotate through 36 transition areas as they cover the approximate 200 mile distance of the race. This means that each relay team member will run 3 legs of varying lengths and difficulty and will cover an average total distance of ~16.6 miles. There will also be an Ultra Distance division that will have a team limit of 6 members. In this case, the average distance covered per Ultra Distance Team runner would be ~ 33 miles. The runners will rotate in a set order once the race begins and will be obligated to follow this rotation until the final runner Reaches the Beach!

Sunny - (oh math genius) What would our average pace have to be to finish in 24 hrs?

OK This is so doable! Sunny what do you think? Could we get 12 people who could do a 10mpm? Or some REAL fast people to carry the team while the rest of us lounge in the van! :rotfl2: Oh..and eat! If DH says I can do it..I'm in..who else?

Ummmmm.....I'm wayyyy too slow for that race. But I can :cheer2: you guys on!!!! :teeth:

Judy Don't be so hard on yourself. Riding and running are two VERY different things. Kind of like running vs hurdles. Yeah they use the smae appedages, but they use completely different muscles. The only thing they really have in common is the more you do them the less sore you get.

I can't remember wether I posted yesterday or not, DH wouldn't leave me alone at the comp for 2 minutes. So I'll just go ahead and post yesterdays and todays. Yesterday I went running on this jogging trail, I guess I assumed that they would have the mileage marked, but no such luck. So although I don't know exactly how far I ran I know how long. I did 30 minutes. My Mom came along and pushed the baby in his jogging stroller while my 4 year old rode his bike. Today I went to the gym and ran around the track, I did 3 miles in 28min 38 sec. Not too bad. My legs are throbbing today though. I am so glad tomorrow is a rest day!! I definately need to build up the muscles on the front of my shins in order to prevent the pain I get there. Since I haven't done a whole lot of running in the past few months I think that those muscles really need some work.

Dana

Dana & lilouisianagal - Thank you for your encouragement. I was just amazed at how out of shape I still was! Well, I'll turn that around and use it to inspire me to keep going and try harder! Although my quads might protest, but I know how to shut them up! :teeth:

Cingoutload - I am a department manager at IBM. The entire company has to have a plan so we can continue to be in business. I guess I understand that but if it came down to an epidemic I really think I might have more important worries than coming into work! :sad2:

Cam - I meant to say thank you so much for what you wrote yesterday about cheering me on. That was so sweet of you! You are an amazing insiration and one of the nicest people I've never met! :goodvibes

OK now, seriously....where is LISA!?!?!?!

Judy

Dana....do you have shin splints? If so make sure to ice them. I used to get them terribly when I played different sports. The change from hard surface to grass/trail always made a difference and caused the terrible shin pain. Although it could just be those muscles being sore from the exercise. Either way ice can't hurt and rest day will do wonders! Otherwise....WOW super pace for your 3 miler :thumbsup2 .

Judy...Not to worry...as everyone else has said each sport works your body differently and will cause you to fatigue differently. It's great for cross-training though!!! BTW....riding is SUPER exercise for your legs. It will compliment your walking/running. :thumbsup2 And the whole bird-flu thing is making me CRAZY!! Sooo stressful :guilty: .

Sunny...I would not be a help to your reach the beach team. Unfortunately I'm too slow LOL. But it sounds like SO MUCH FUN!!!

Well, I did go to class today but my calf is sore again. I think it's a tight muscle as opposed to an actual injury. No swelling, no discoloration and it actually feels better with stretching and exercise. I think it will be okay. I am going to take a break from running tomorrow....maybe I'll do a nice, leisurely walk instead. And I'm resting all day Friday as I have a field trip with DD. Hopefully I'll be ready for my Sunday run :teeth: .

Christa-- I am really interested. Unfortunately my super fast friend from the gym is already on another team. But I think 10:00 should be doable. But did you look at the profile maps on some of the legs  Especially the first 5K. Check and see how many you could get together. Would Bree and her FIL be interested? I know Bree is sort of on running vacation. MelR? Would the EC come so the rest of us could do 12mpm? :rotfl: I think I could borrow my parents' mini van as long as we got the stink out! Let's keep brainstorming. I think it fills up fast.

Sunny

Oooh, I'm still interested, and I was hoping with my training that I could get down to a 10mpm pace. I used to be able to run that in another life - before the princesses princess: princess:. I was thinking with my training over the summer that I would be able to get back to a 10 mpm pace, but I'm no where near that now. I guess if you guys get your team of 12 together that I can still always run the Rochester 1/2 Marathon here that weekend.

Hi, everyone!! :wave2: Our server was down all day at work, it just came back up. I was having SERIOUS withdrawls. The good news is, I got A LOT of work done today because I couldn't get distracted. Yesterday was a good training day for me, I went to the Community Center after work and did the stationary bike for 30 minutes, keeping my rpms around 80-85 and then I lifted weights. It felt pretty awesome being one of the few girls in the weight room with a bunch of muscle heads! :teeth: I think I'm going to do pilates tonight and then try running again tomorrow, hopefully my knee will be okay.

Melissa--Sorry you have a sore booty! Hope you are feeling better soon!

Judy--Stop being so hard on yourself, you are an athlete!! You were just working a different set of muscles yesterday.

Sunny--That race sounds awesome! Sadly I'm too slow for you guys too. Right now I'm averaging about 10:50 a mile, but I'm only doing 4-5 miles. Once my mileage goes up, my pace will go down. But I'll definitely be with you guys in spirit. I thought of you yesterday when I was doing my leg presses, I was looking forward to the day when I can lift as much as you do. ;)

Kathy-- :grouphug: on your foot. Get healthy so you can train for the Disney marathon!!

Christa-- :cheer2: :cheer2: on your tri! You are going to rock!!

I better go, it's almost that time and I need to tie a few loose ends up before I leave. I have to make a detour to Stephen's work on my way home, it seems he has locked his keys in his truck. I didn't really need to tell you that, I just wanted a chance to razz him!! Talk to all later! Happy training!!

Hi Everyone,

Things with my allergy doctor went well - we further discussed everything and talked to the insurance company and it turns out that I can still go for my treatment (thank god, before going to the allergy doctor - I would end up in the emergency room two times a year because I couldn't breathe). I'm so glad that it worked out. :thumbsup2

Today, I bought myself some toys......I finally got my bosu ball!!! Expensive but I really wanted to work the core and the bosu will definitely do that! Plus I want to encourage my DH to work with it also. I need a workout buddy and I'm hoping that he's it :teeth:

I've been using my Fitness center a lot at the apartments but haven't been back to my gym - I have to get back to that too! I hope to get out running with my running club this Saturday but you never know......I don't want to say without a doubt I will but things have come up in the past....it will eventually happen.

BTW Dave - that's great that you joined the group that you were talking about.....you will have to keep us updated on how things go.

Well gotta run,

Jodi

Mel- :rotfl2:

Wow, we've been busy today. 2 1/2 pages since noon! I did 40 min & my pace was.....13:34 :cool1: plus ST. It was a beautiful day! :sunny: Perfect walking weather. I am so ready for spring & so glad to be able to train outside & not on the stupid dreadmill.

Good news, my WISH buddy is coming to do DL too! I met her in Jan. & now I get to hang out with her again. I am so thrilled to have hooked up with a great bunch of people. I almost 8 weeks we get to meet again :grouphug:

Jodi - Those bosu balls are so cool! I've never used one, but i've read about them and they look neat!

Sunny - I don't know about EC.(budget thing for both of us actually) I could do a 10min mile for 13-15, but after that, I'm out as far as pace (I could do 10:54 for 26.2 :) . If I knew of some good climbing, mabye i could get phil to come, but we couldn't climb if we brought the boy. Oh yeah, is the rest of the team going to babysit in the van while they are resting and eating?? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Sunny- you temptress you! I know I can do the pace because I did 11 at it last weekend at training pace but... it's the weekend after I'm racing Ironman Wisconsin(2.4 mile swim/112 mile bike/itty bitty run, oops I mean 26.2 miles- maybe if I keep telling myself it's just a little running my body will believe it).
While I raced Grafton Lakes Off Road Tri 2 weeks after both times I did IM LP, it was 2 weeks rather than 1 and I certainly wasn't on top of my game(lost the Northeast regional champion status for my age group 3 miles into the 10K run the second year :guilty: ) Tell you what- I'll suck it up if you decide to race the sprint distance at Timberman this year. You're taking the swim lessons and hey the Boston Bike expo is taking place this weekend. You can come hang out with a bunch of us triathlete types at it after RTR Sunday morning.

Christa- you'll do great at your triathlon! There is an article on packing lists by cliff english I think on triathletemag.com. That can give you an idea about what you might want to have with you.

Mel- great job on the Grouper run. Hmm, 2 halves in a little over 2 months and changing work schedule, I do believe I hear a Mickey medal calling your name.

Looking at my training log, it's a little disconcerting to realize it's only the 8th. I've biked 81 miles in 3 sessions, swam 8 miles in 4 sessions, and ran 35+ miles in 5 sessions. The weekly run miles will be decreasing after this week, the swim staying fairly steady, and the bike- oh my, it's only going up- a lot. However, a bike is much easier to ride than a horse because it only occasionally has a mind of its own and it seems that mountain bikes are the ones with a prediliction for throwing you.

PD to the nagging aches and pains.
Keep training hard everyone.

-Lynne

Umm, climbing in New Hampshire??? That's all it would take? It's only some of the best in the East. Google climbing and North Conway. There are multiple climbing schools based out of there including Eastern Mountain Sports main one(there's another one in the Shawgunks in New York). The state is known for it's granite so non-crumbly rock=good climbing. I grew up in the Rockies in western Montana and I still was impressed by the White Mountains in New Hampshire and how gorgeous they are. Oh and finances- lots of flights into Manchester including Southwest. That's actually where I fly out of- much cheaper than ME and actually usually cheaper than Logan in Boston too.

OOOHHH!!! I am so in!! :thumbsup2

24 hours of togetherness! :grouphug:

Actually it does sound like a great time! So do we have enough yet?

From what I have read, we each have three shifts of running with varying distances, so someone who only has a 4 miler could really kick it into high gear and be well under that 10 mpm. We will be fine to make the cutoff. So when does this fill up?

Amy, you would be ready for this in September.

Anybody else lurking that is interested?

On a side note, I just had my first swimming lesson today. I was really raw, but I loved it. I have a 5K race on Saturday and then back in the pool Sunday. I think I will be hooked on this triathon thing if I can build up my swim endurance in the next month.

Colleen

Man, that 200mi/24 hours looks so fun! I am no where near a 10:00 pace though. Maybe next year! I could design shirts for you though! I'm good at that :thumbsup2

My work outs are going pretty well. Running each day and doing challenges at the gym (Coach challenges, pretty intense!). I stayed the same though, weight wise, this week which I guess is better than gaining and probably because I'm in PMSville, USA. :p

Ugh, I have homework to do for my class before bed. I just love biting off more than I can chew! ;)

Keep up the good work all! Sending everyone lots of Pixie Dust!! pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: :grouphug:

Christiana

Amy Actually it is shin splints, but I know why I am getting them and I know how to fix it , thank goodness!! I didn't have any ice available for them today at the gym, so as soon as I got done running I stood in an ice cold shower for 5 minutes. That seemed to help. I just need to do some excersizes to strengthen that front muscle, that usually seems to do the trick. Thanks for the advice though!! :thumbsup2
