Wk of Mar 26--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

That was a really nice article about the musical Cam. You must be so proud of your son. Have a great trip, relax, and have a lot of fun! I wish I was going!

aladdinsgirl, As a nurse, the brother of an exercise physiologist and a veteran of 17 years of running I have one thing to say to you: if the shorts make you change your stride then find shorts that don't do that. It is more than possible, in fact it is probable, that the stride change is the root cause of the knee pain. Do you experience the pain when you wear the Nikes? If not stick with them. And great job keeping up with your training.

Hey guys, can I join in on the talk about training? I have been posting on other threads but have not posted here because I was concerned I would sound condescending when offering advice. I completed the marathon with a Team in Training group this year and was one of two who were referred to as "the fast guys" by the rest of the team. This is far from true but we were faster than the other 100 plus people in the group. However, I have 17 years of running races under my belt and the other "fast guy" was a collegiate runner who has been running for over 20 years. The one thing I have found in the running community is that we love to talk running/training be it with vets or new runners and advice is always just a question away. So, if you all don't mind, can I jump in?

:wave2: Hi Goofyguy!!! YES YES YES please join our group :). I know that I depend on the advice of all the experienced runners here. I am new to the joy of running and currently I'm training for the 07 Marathon, in addition to several other races leading up to Jan. 07. Please feel free to post your training here, answer questions and generally join in the fun and friendship :teeth: . You truly won't find a nicer group of folks :goodvibes .

Cam: Thanks for sharing the article!!! Your son must be so excited for his performances!

Judy: :grouphug: Glad to "see" you. I'm really happy that you aren't experiencing the dizzy spells! Now once that MRI comes back just fine...you'll know it was some weird inner-ear thing. Pixie Dust for great results from that awful MRI, you really were a trooper.

Kim: Glad to see another kickboxing fan! It's a great cross-training activity!

I haven't had much time to post, but I want to check in here quick.

I did 4 miles yesterday doing my walk/run thing. I finished in 54:25. Slow compared to most of you, but good for me. I am just trying to stay under the 15 min./mile requirement for the Minnie 15k. In addition to that, I am only 7 lbs. away from my Weight Watchers goal! I think this new exercise is finally giving my body the push to get to goal for once and for all.

I did my 3 mile Leslie Sansone DVD today for my crosstraining and my schedule has me doing 3 miles tomorrow as well as strength.

Hey Team: I got a preliminary design from "The Sock Guy" for our team socks. Let me know what you think. My preference would be for green socks with either white or black letters and designs. Seems like black on green would match the shirts from last year pretty well. I like the feathers on them. Do you want to try to incorporate little penguins at all? Maybe alternate feathers and penguins on the socks. Let me know what you think.

Very cute socks!!

I rode the excercise bike tonight at the gym for 40 minutes and got on the treadmill to run since I was warmed up and got half a mile in before my hip cramped. I need to make sure I'm stretching better. Oh well I still got a 3 mile walk in today as well as the bike so all in all I am back in training.

Weird experience today. I was on the TM when the power flickered...enough that the TM shut down immediately, then popped back on. Unfortunately, I lost all my data. I know I was almost at 35 min, but have no clue where I was distance-wise :furious:

Kim...:welcome: Wow...tell us all about Turkey! congrats on your marriage!

Goofyguy...:welcome: Always glad to have another voice of experience on the team.

Dave...the socks are cool! Where do you think they would add the penguins?

Kristi...congrats on your 4 miles! Great pace! :cheer2:

Krista, Amy...Kinda figured Lisa would be the one leaving tonight. Last night was definitely not a good one. Hope next show is better...did they say what the theme would be?

Off to do some painting...we're redoing the kitchen and dining rooms!

I'm ba-a-ack

Spent the last 5 days in San Antonio, Texas visiting family. Had a nice time and got a little work-out in here and there.

There's no way I'll catch up on this thread, but I did get the chance to read a little.

Dave: Love the socks!

Cam: I haven't had a great exercise month for March either. Gonna make a serious effort to get back on track in April.

Mel: Missed the Idol show last night. Watched the results tonight. They said next week's theme will be country. I was sorry to see Lisa go. I liked her.

I thought they could remove half the feathers and replace them with penguins. So you could have feathers and penguins on the socks, but that might be a little too busy.

Y'know, I can't afford to miss even a single day here - never mind several days! Takes me FOREVER to catch up!

I'm scared not to check in every day cause there's no way I'll have the time to read several days at once! I should be in bed, but I knew I had to read or else be hopelessly lost.

For all the new guys, welcome. You'll find more encouragement here than you'll ever imagine.

For everyone else, I'll have to catch up later! But I just had to share that tonight we were having dinner with friends who were asking how the training for the Minnie was going and if I knew anyone else who was doing it other than DH and me, and I said "no, other than about 50 friends who I've never met!" Then I had to explain all about this group, and I realized I really did feel like I knew lots of people who'll be there. How's THAT for mushy?

OK...this is it...my last whine.....

Car damage is 3 grand :furious: The good thing is...I could have been halfway to Ohio when this happend....so now we are trying to figure out what to do...is it really worth it to put the $$ into the car....or should we just lease something at this point.....and then there is the house stuff to worry about :sad2: So no Columbus for me this time.

Sorry about not being so positive these days! I do have a lot to be thankful for! And I do really seem to love my job.

And for those heading to Columbus, have a great race! I will be thinking about you all.... a lot!!!

Dave -
I love the socks.....I do have an idea though. What if they could print a big feather in the heal area (where it is now green) and have the penguins as the rest of the print? Just a suggestion, don't even know if that is doable. :confused3

BTW - hope you don't mind the suggestion :goodvibes

Hello Everyone,

Well, today is my Friday at work :) I have taken tomorrow off - what a very stressful week. No one seemed happy with anything and I just feel like I needed the added day off.

Last night was my rest night - Tonight is the Weight Watchers meeting but I hope to still go running. If not, I can do my 3 miles outside tomorrow (still supposed to be beautiful.

Saturday is my personal trainer day......good thing to because if I went running outside with the group I think I would be running in the rain, at least that is the prediction today.

Well, I talked to another personal trainer friend and she said what I am going through with my abs tightening is normal - it happened to her as well. Now, I don't feel like there is something wrong with me.

I still have to pick up my allergy medications.....I went last night and discovered that I had brought the wrong card, I brought my healthcare card and not my prescription card. :sad2: My allergy meds should help me with my breathing......I've had problems breathing through my nose, so I asked the doctor's office to call in nasal spray and some allergy pills.

I'm going to go and check out some of the posts from the past couple of days. See what is happening with all of you. :)

Have a great day!

Jodi

Amy - I sent the information about the half marathon that I will be doing in October. I did try to look and see if I could find anything in your area but saw nothing.

Liz - I'm so glad that you are doing well with the new job. Sorry to hear about the car though.

Dave - sounds like you are doing a great job keeping up with the running. Congrats on buying the Garmin. When are you expecting it?

Again, I hope you don't mind my suggestion about the socks. :goodvibes

So then I get to work, feeling a little better after my morning escapade, and one of my co-workers is coughing every 30 seconds. It's driving me insane. I know she can't help it, but I can't listen to her cough and blow her nose every 30 seconds until 5:00. I've been at work for an hour and I already have a splitting headache.

I have people like this at work also.....although, it isn't a cough it is blowing there nose - It's really grossing me out. I feel bad I feel that way but one guy makes a lot of noise with his nose - drives me crazy. :)

Decided to run the "ScoJo 5k" Monday night...I was scheduled for a 32 minute 3w/1r, seeing how I did 3 miles in around 33 minutes on Saturday I figured I'd just do the 3 mile since it was so close to 32 minutes anyway. I have a very hilly course and completed it in just over 35 minutes so I was very pleased. I also increased the level of difficulty during my elliptical workout on Tuesday so I covered less miles but had a better, more intense 30 minute workout.

Great job! :woohoo:

Cam - Thanks for sharing the article about your son's play. They all look so cute! I still have to read most of the article (limited time at work), I will read it once I get home.

Well, I have to start the day everyone!

Jodi

Good morning everyone! I was lazy exercise wise last night, so I have nothing to report there. I'm counting cleaning up dirt from the carpet and folding and putting away 2 loads of laundry (that Stephen swore he would do on Sunday :rolleyes2 ) as cross training. :teeth:

I think we may be on to something with the New Balance shorts. Isn't that too weird??? The funny thing is, I've had these shorts since last summer but I didn't have problems with my IT band until about a month or so ago. I'm guessing it was taking 3 weeks off after the half and then jumping back into training where I left off caused the initial problem and now the short are just aggravating it. So I guess I'm going on a shopping spree for Nike shorts. Can anyone use some size small New Balance shorts?? :teeth:

Goofy Guy--:welcome: Please, share your wisdom!!!

Liz-- I'm so sorry about your car! That really stinks. But thankfully, you were home and not half way to Columbus.

Dave--Cool socks. Do you know if the socks are cotton or Cool Max?

Mel--The theme for AI next week is country. :rolleyes2 I'm not a big country fan, there are certain artists I like (Faith Hill, Martina McBride, and the Dixie Chicks), but overall I'm thinking YUCK!! I wasn't surprised about Lisa, but I was very surprised about Katharine being in the bottom 2. I didn't really care for her performance Tuesday night, but I think she has been great every other week. That is frustrating about your treadmill!! I hate when stuff like that happens.

Terri--Welcome back!!! We missed you!!

I better get to work; the end of the month is also so hectic. Can you believe that Saturday is April??? :rainbow: (I had to sneak these guys in because I think they are cute!)

Kristy/Mel: I was sad about Lisa Tucker. She was so composed for such a young girl. I'm not surprised though...she was in the bottom 3 now a few times. Katherine surprised me though...I couldn't believe she was there?!?!? I would love to go shopping with you for new running shorts :teeth: , I need warmer weather running clothes now that the weather finally got nice here! Where do you guys usually find the best running clothes at a decent price?

Dave: CUTE socks!! I love the idea of adding penguins too! And as someone asked....are they by any chance cool-max or similar material?

Liz: Sorry about the car problem :(. That totally stinks!!! Hope your week is getting better :grouphug:

Jodi: Thanks for the info on the half marathon! :goodvibes I used to live up in Mystic CT, so I was hoping the race would be up there so I could incorporate it into a visit with my friends. I think I found 2 half marathons down here in NJ (one at the beach and one with views of the Statue of Liberty). Both sound cool!!!

I was healthy for exactly one week AND.... I developed a sore throat yesterday afternoon :confused3 . Just came out of nowhere. I'm supposed to run for 30 minutes this afternoon but I'm not sure I want to do that as I know it will irritate my throat even more. I'll see how the morning progresses but I may be taking a rest day today and push my run off until tomorrow. It's VERY frustrating! Arghhhhh :furious:

Amy--Sorry you are feeling bad again. Here is some :wizard: for you to get better and STAY better. :) As far as looking for running clothes, Target is a good place to find Cool Max running clothes and their prices are pretty good. Another thing I do is shop on-line at Champs, Foot Locker, and Finish Line, looking at their clearance section first. Champs rips you off on shipping, but I saw yesterday that Finish Line has free shipping now. I looked for some Nike shorts, but sadly they didn't have my size (only bad thing about looking at clearance stuff first). If on-line shopping fails, I head to Dicks, hoping for a sale because they are outrageously over priced, especially on name brands. I LOVE to shop and I'm never opposed to finding a good deal!! :teeth:

Hi, everyone! I am sure you are all sick of hearing me say how I have done NO training and whining all the time, but I wanted to pop in and say mushy things (insert mushy things here, so that Cam won't embarass herself -- what are friends for? right?)

Anyway, I am hoping to report back next week with good news about having the discipline to work out while in the World.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

I had a rest day yesterday - so nothing to report training wise. I'll answer a couple of questions about the socks if I can. What do people think about the colors? Anyone interested in all green with white or black letters and designs?

Jodi - I don't mind the suggestion at all. I really want these to be our TEAM socks, and I'm hoping a bunch of us will really like them and want to get them and race in them as our team. I figured the design was a first step, and I didn't make it so I don't have any emotion invested in it. I'll ask about the feather in the heel area and penguins as the rest of the print. Maybe we could have a feather coming up from the heel like it's coming out of our shoe or something?

Krista and Amy the socks are definitely NOT cotton. I'll look into what they are made of I'm not sure off the top of my head. They are biking socks, but they also have "Channel Air" padded running socks which I'm hoping we can get.

Here's a description of their basic biking sock:
Made with 75% Ultra-wicking Micro Denier Acrylic, 15% Nylon, and 10% Spandex for exceptional comfort and strength. ALL of our socks feature our "Stretch-to-Fit" sizing system and our exclusive "Easy-fit" cuff for a PERFECT FIT every time on any foot. These features create superior softness and comfort and help eliminate blisters and hot spots. We also feature a double stitched heel & toe for added strength and durability. We deliver Superior Quality and High-Tech Comfort in every SockGuy sock we make. We guarantee it.

Here's a description of their Channel Air running sock:
Our Channel-Air(tm) socks are designed with 5 channels of padded cushioning where you need it, and 4 channels of mesh for increased air flow. Typical padded socks have more bulk in the foot that increases heat build-up and puts undue stress on the moisture management system. We have solved that problem with the introduction of 4 channels of air-mesh eliminating needless weight and bulk. Our Channel-Air sock design delivers the perfect combination of Ultra-Plush Cushioning and Air-Mesh with an arch support for a cool and cushioned fit.

I'm going to send another e-mail to the company now with some suggestions. Please send any other thoughts you think of.

Here's some more information I got from the SockGuy website. Remember - I am definitely not a salesman for these people, and I don't want to push anyone into getting these socks. It's just an idea. OK - here's the clips from the website. Feel free to take a look at the website if you want and see what you think.

http://www.sockguy.com/

SockGuy socks have been worn by champions in all Major Cycling Stage Races, Ironman competitions, Sturgis, and most major running events around the world.

Our two main retail sizes are S/M (fits sizes 6-10) and L/XL (fits sizes 9-13). We also offer a "One-Size-Fits-Most" size (fits sizes 7-11) for our custom sock orders only. This is an excellent size choice for small events and clubs who want an excellent custom sock on a small budget.

How we build THE Most Comfortable Socks You Will Ever Wear-The first step to building a great sock is the material. SockGuy starts with a blend of the finest micro-denier acrylic whose properties are such that they out-wick cotton by over 75%! Combining this wicking aspect with a low pilling fiber that inherently does not attract odors, shrink or fade in the wash. Add in super tough nylon for our heels and toes along with locking in the patterns in the cuffs for strength and looks .Finish with just enough spandex to produce our exclusive Stretch to Fit™ sizing system. Combining these elements with our state of the art knitting machines we produce a sock of extremely highly technical properties that are simply The Most Comfortable Socks You Will Ever Wear!

Other Highlights of the building process:
Seaming-Our toes are seamed slightly to the rear of the start of the toe to provide as much comfort as possible to eliminate any seam discomfort.

Moisture Management System- The Moisture Management System (MMS) is the term given for a garments ability to wick moisture (sweat) away from the skin and into the garment then back into the air. For hosiery the MMS starts at the toe and extends up through the cuff. The moisture literally travels throughout the length of the sock to escape from your skin and the sock itself.
