Wk of Mar 26--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Got about 3 miles walking in today. I do not know my exact distance but I know my pace was not as fast as I would have liked. At least I am out there walking.

Dave Great job with the socks. I do think more penguins would be nice, simly because I think they are so cute!

Minnie I posted on your other thread about your trip decision but I'll say it here too. In my mind, 2 trips to WDW are always better than 1 trip, especially since you're still looking at 8 days for the second trip. Besides, you may still be able to fit in some of the extras, and Flower & Garden is really beautiful!

Kevin Enjoy that foster puppy! Hope your roommate feels better.

Lynnda You had a great swim workout! Your swimming has come a long way! Good for you for taking advantage of the instruction available to you!

Jackie If you can wog 4 miles in 52 min, you'll do great in the Minnie 5K!

Kristi I get swelling in my hands when I walk, too, but not quite as much as you do. It is enough that I generally do not wear my rings when I am walking. I'm thinking about what MelR said, though. I think I will try pumping my arms more when I walk and see if that helps any. Maybe it will get me moving faster, too!

Chimera I'm sure I'd have fallen off that treadmill. I'd look like the people in that TV commercial who are walking on their hands on treadmills and fall off one by one till only the one who drank the sports drink being advertised is still up.

I forgot to tell you about our animal encounter on our walk today! We were walking along and I thought I saw a branch alongside the road. DH said he didn't think it was a branch, but as I was telling him I was pretty sure it WAS a branch it lifted it's head, looked around at us, and took off running! Yep, it was a gator encounter! Fortunately, it was a cute little one, and it was running back towards the lake and not towards us! That little critter could really move! Wish I could run that fast! And this was in the neighborhood we rented in before our house was built, where I used to go walking by myself late at night! Such are the joys of living in Florida! :sunny: Gotta love it! :teeth:

Yea for not gaining!!!! :cool1: I lost 1.5 this week. I'm happy, but I always wish it was more! ;) We can do this - next week will be awesome!

As for the swimming, I started taking lessons in January at our community pool - it's $10 each week. I could swim okay, but certainly not with actual form or proper technique. Really, I could only swim under water or doggie paddle... :lmao: It's amazing what a little coaching can do. If you are interested, you could check out your local parks/recreation group.

Hope you have a great run tomorrow!!!

--Lynnda

Good job on the weight loss! Congratulations!!! Don't we always wish it was more? Next week - Definetely losing :) I'm getting closer to where I want to be and of course it is now taking it's time getting down there!

Yeah - the doggie paddle was about all I ever knew but never took it further, I haven't been in a pool since I was around 11 years old. Good idea about find a community center to get swimming lessons - never really thought about it!

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Wow, another beautiful day out there yesterday. I did my 2.8-3.0 mile run in Mt Hope Cemetery again yesterday in ~31 min. I don't know exactly how far it was or how long it took me. I'm waiting for my Garmin to arrive... Speaking of the Garmin, remember how I said I needed a Garmin because I watch the running watch I was using? Well, ummm, I just found it yesterday. Whoopsie, I guess I didn't need the Garmin afterall. Oh well, too late now.

Lynnda - great job on your run and swim. Good luck with your triathalon. When is it? Is it the Danskin Tri?

Maherae - Good luck with your 10 miler this weekend. Oooh, I'm thinking I might need some warm weather running clothes too. My Mr. Incredible tights might be too warm for me soon.

Jackie - Yeah! Great job on your 4 mile workout. WTG!
The socks are great. I'm wishing I was doing the marathon so I could wear the socks!
You can get the socks anyway. You're a TEAM member, right? It would be just another way to think of your TEAM while you're training.

Kristi - Good job on your 3 mile run. Sounds like you might be having circulatory troubles. Have you ever had any other issues with your circulatory system?
Originally posted by jodistar: Hey, once the design is in place, how much will the socks be? Is it more expensive to have them custom made?
Hi Jodi :wave2: Here's the pricing for the socks: 10-19 dzn $4.75/pair, 20-39 dzn $3.95/pair, 40-59 dzn $3.75/pair. I thought that pricing was really reasonable. The only thing is there is also a $50 one-time setup fee to get our design into their sewing machine. I must admit I haven't thought at all about the the logisitics of how we would pay for the socks. Do I have to get all the socks and send them out to people, or can team members get SockGuy to send socks directly to them? I also don't know how to handle the $50 setup fee. Should TEAM members pitch in for the fee and we just pay a little more for our first few socks? Those are all details I don't know about, and if you or anyone have ideas I'd love to hear it.

Jen - Great workout! Wow, 60 minutes of exercise in 1 day doesn't sound "slacky" to me at all.
I like the design also. I am kind of novice and not sure what the feather means (I know the penguin).
The TEAM members from last year can correct me if I'm wrong, but the feather came from the design of the shirts for the marathon last year. It is supposed to represent the feather that Dumbo :dumbo: holds to believe he can fly.

Tricia/TnTsParty - good luck with your 5K coming up! Great job on your 2 miles in 19min! Wow, sub 10mpm pace, that is great! You are really moving out there!

Good luck to everyone running races this weekend! Especially to all you in the Columbus Distance Classic tomorrow! Have a great weekend!

Melissa, PerfectMatch & Mouse Skywalker - thanks for your replies! Since a couple of you have the same thing happen, I don't feel so bad now. I will try tying my shoes a bit looser next time. Taking of my rings is probably a good idea also.

I have always had bad circulation. I remember is 8th grade having swelling problems in my lower legs. The docs said it was growing pains and that I'd grow out of it in 1-2 years! :rotfl: My legs still swell up if I stand still for periods of time! It's probably just me and my bad circulation - but now affecting my hands more due to the walking/running. Maybe I'll start running around the neighborhood with my arms in the air like MelRhoads!

I am sick today with this sore throat thing that is going around. I stayed home from work, so I am not going to even do the yoga I planned for today. I am going to crawl back to bed now...Hopefully, I'll feel up to my 4 miler tomorrow.

Kristi and Mel-- I used to have the hand swelling problem *really* bad. I tried to do some research on it, only to find that there are a ton of reasons why it could happen. One of the things it can be is the first sign of hyponatremia (that is the opposite of dehydration)-- it occurs when you drink so much water you flush the electrolytes out of your system. (How it causes the swelling, I have no idea). I switched to a half gatorade/half water combination for runs over an hour, and to full gatorade for runs over two hours, and it seems to work. Occasionally, I still have it a bit, especially on really long runs, but it's an idea!

Lynnda-wow you are doing awesome on your swimming. Its amazing how quickly one can improve learning the right way to do it, isnt it? My tri is Memorial Day. You're doing the Danskin, right? I'm thinking of skipping the one in May & doing one in June. 2 reasons, outdoor pool swim & still really cold water here then & close to Minnie & is hard training for both. Not sure what I'm doing yet. I would love to do the Danskin next year. Congrats on the weight loss :thumbsup2

Dave is right, the feather is the feather from Dumbo to make him believe in himself. That's what this is all about, right, believing you can do something you never thought you could do.

Kristi-I get tingly toes every once in a while. And when I do my LR my fingers get so swollen that they look like vienna sausages and its hard to bend them. I never wear my rings when wogging. They go down within an hour or two. Dont know the cause. :confused3

MDM-Great job  You showed him, didnt you. How dare he doubt you :teeth: And you most definately do not have to be doing a marathon to wear the WISH socks. You are here & part of us & doing what its all about-getting healthier, no matter what your event is. :sunny:

And yes 5 weeks from right now I will be on a plane headed to ORLANDO :cool1: (very early flight) I am so excited about it that I am driving everyone crazy with the constant updates on how long it is until I leave. (even those going with me) Oh well, they new they were going with a Disney nut when they signed on for the trip

Have a great Friday everyone!

I am so sad!!! We started mixing big boy food into Hines' puppy food this morning. My baby is growing up!!!!!!!!!!  I had a nice walk outside last night (glad that it's finally warming up), I did 3 miles in 41:09 (wearing my Nike shorts ;) ). I would have liked to have gone faster, but I still averaged 13:43 a mile, so I guess that's pretty good. While I was walking, Stephen took Hines on a walk and his first swim at the lake. When we met back at the car, I looked at Hines, saw that he was sopping wet (and we were driving MY car :furious: ), and looked at Stephen. He got this little grin and gave the explanation that Hines wanted to go swimming. :rolleyes2 He was very well behaved last night, I'm guessing because he was exhausted!!

Melissa--Are you feeling better? I don't fault you at all for packing up and heading to Mom and Dad's. When Stephen and I first got married, he used to travel 6-8 weeks at time, only coming home every other weekend. I would stay with my parents and only go home to get the mail and more clothes from time to time.

Lynnda-- :cheer2: on your weight loss!! I know how exciting every pound can be. I lost 15 lbs from Jan-Apr last year, it's the best feeling in the world.

Kristi--I have problems with my hands swelling too. They swell more when I walk than when I run. You should have seen my hands after the half marathon, I did run 4/walk 1, but they still swelled up and it was painful to bend my fingers. I'm with Melissa, I think it has something to do with pumping your arms and maybe your hands being below your heart when you walk. I don't know, that's pure guessing. I run with hands up in the air sometimes too. Good luck! And feel better!!

Jackie--Way to show DH that you CAN do the Minnie!!

Good luck with everyone doing the Columbus this weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cheer2:  :cheer2:

Good morning all!!

Thank you to everyone who validated my playing with the new foster puppy instead of running the other day. :teeth: He's going out on a couple of home visits tomorrow so it doesn't look like he will be here long. (And really, that's a good thing. You always want to find them a good permanent home ASAP.) He sure is cute, though... and the other pooches in the house are totally enthralled. Judy, I'm working on getting a picture uploaded this weekend.

Jackie-- You can tell your DD that Newfies are GREAT dogs. Very affectionate, even tempered, gets along with other dogs well. That said, they are BIG BOYS (and girls). They eat you out of house and home (and usually require a high quality (expensive) food.) One of the reasons I got involved in rescue is that they are such big boys they don't get adopted so easily from shelters since a lot of people just don't have the room.

Dave-- I too had a running watch before I purchased my Garmin and I MUCH prefer my Garmin. The display is a lot easier to read and the GPS is a huge help with training runs.

Yesterday afternoon I finally got my run in and did 4 miles in 36:48 or 9:12/mile pace. I'm very happy with that. If the weather holds I might try and get another few miles in today-- otherwise it'll be crosstraining. I am definately shooting for a long run this Sunday as well.. 6 miles, maybe more.

Best of luck to all of you participating in Columbus this weekend! Go Team GO! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :yay:  :wizard:

Back to work here....
Happy training all!

Hey... that overhydration swelling hands thought makes alot of sense to me. I have that happen when I'm hot and when I'm running marathons b/c i drink alot of gatoraide. Hummmmm. Very interesting to think about!!!!

Kristie - I forgot to tell you that i actually use 2 insoles in some of my trail shoes to make them fit better w/o having to tie them so tight!

I'm hoping to go kayaking on the buffalo nat. river w/ my dad and the boy. I'v never kayaked a river b/4 but it should be pretty gentle. I have to check the h2o levels (on this dial up pokey machne!!!)

I didn't bring my little camera, or i would post pics later!!

Hey guys! Well I was really sluggish yesterday, still not sure what I'm dealing with. My head is stuffy and I am still coughing....UGH! It may just be allergies :confused3 , so I think I'm going to give it a go today and try to run. If I feel awful I'll cut the workout short. I definitely want to skip KBX today....too intense.

Tonight is costume night for my DD's plays. I was asked to be parent coordinator to help the cast of 65 kids and teens get their costumes on and checked. It's going to be a loooonnnngggg night LOL.

Yesterday I bought myself new warm weather running clothes. Only one outfit until I find shorts that I love....but it's a start. Next week we leave for Arizona and I get to run in beautiful Sedona and Scottsdale. :sunny:

Krista: Hines sounds so cute! WTG on your walk last night! BTW....I ordered Nike Tempo shorts yesterday and thought of you right away. :teeth:

Jackie: :cheer2: You can DEFINITELY do it....just hang in there and continue to believe in yourself!!! Way to girl, awesome wog!!! :grouphug: .

Dave: Sure you lost your watch...it just magically reappeared after you ordered your garmin LOL! :p (just kiddin') ;) . I think those socks sound so great. And thanks for explaining the feather.... :goodvibes I love the whole tie in to Dumbo with the feather and Bingham with the penguin idea. I would definitely buy those team socks!!!

Tiff:  Your trip is right around the corner!!!

Lynnda: Wow! That is so wonderful that you're swimming too! And congrats on your weight loss this week, you're really doing great :cheer2: .

Jen: Nice workout yesterday! An hour is definitely NOT slacky LOL! Now doing nothing (like me yesterday) is slacky!!!

Nancy: :scared1: A gator!! Yikes. Nice job on getting out there and doing 3 miles. Don't worry about your pace, the important thing is you put the steps in and did something healthy for yourself yesterday. WTG!!!

Kristi: Hope you feel better soon. :grouphug: I can relate to the sick thing...I felt yucky yesterday. Hopefully it comes and goes quickly for you! Rest is truly the best thing!!! Take Care!!

That makes TOTAL sense to me and I actually love the representation. Now if only I could fly!!!!

Oh and I meant I was slacky because my weeks have been so busy and crazy that I am not getting in my running. I am planning to run a 5K on May 6, but am really only at a 2 mile mark right now. I gotta kick it up!!!!

BIG QUESTION! I am struggling with how I should warm up and stretch before running. What do you all do? Some days I feel great and can run for awhile, other days my legs and shins start aching right away (this more often than not). Thanks in advance!!

Jen: I struggle with what to do with warm-ups myself. This is what I've found works best for me lately. I usually do a nice 5 minute warm-up walk. Then I do some standing stretches...particularly calf stretches, quad stretches and hip flexors. I'll then begin my run...right now I run 30 minutes twice per week and then run for distance (currently 3.5 miles) once per week.

I find that what you do after your run is equally important and impacts my next run. I do a cool-down walk of about 5 min and then stretch. I just bought a Yoga for Runners DVD and use that as my stretch. But as long as you take about 10 minutes to seriously stretch out your legs, hips, back, etc you should be fine! :thumbsup2

Kevin: I forgot to say that I'm so impressed that you are fostering that Newfie. It's such an important thing to do....my friend rescues and fosters Boxers so I know that it's hard work BUT a much needed service! Great job on your run too! Wow....awesome pace :cheer2: .

T.G.I.F.! :mickeyjum

This morning I did something a little different. I have been reading The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Running or Walking a Half Marathon, and I realized I am in a rut. So today I alternated speeds. I did 10 min @ 3.8, then 10 @ 4.00 then 10 @ 3.8, then 10 @ 4, then 5 @ 3.8. I think I need to add one higher intensity workout per week. I consider my LW my lower intensity walk since I do it at 3.6.

Also, even though I have been watching movies (This morning's selection: Calendar Girls. What a great movie!) I have been paying attention to my form, and every couple of minutes I do a mental "Form Check". I was pleased to realize I have been carrying myself correctly. My arm swing is appropriate, my stride is not too long, my posture, well, OK, I need to remind myself to stand up straight! But I'll work on that. I'm pulling my abs in somewhat. But, honey, my abs ain't been pulled in since 1975! :p

Dave - Thank you for asking about my MRI. I am supposed to hear from my doctor today. She has been out of the office the last few days. I'm sure they didn't find anything. I suspect if something was really obvious I would have heard from somebody. Right????

Maherae - I am so sorry! You sent me a PM and I haven't answered you yet! Bad Honeibee! Bad bad! I can't wait to get outside and do something! I want to go to the HS track, but the only chance I will have this weekend looks like rain! Guess I shouldn't be a wimp, hu? Let's see...inside on the TM with a Cary Grant movie, or out on the track in the rain??? Hmmmm..... :rolleyes1

Jackie - You go girl! You must be in great shape! Nothing like someone telling you that you can't do something to set you right out on proving them wrong!

Nancy - COOL! :goodvibes I love seeing wildlife! Even gators!

Dave - Ha ha, you're funny! :lmao: Well, what if one breaks? You need a back-up, right?

Oh Kevin, enjoy him while you can. He deserves a fur-ever home, though, I agree. No matter how hard it is to give him up. paw:

Amy - Gosh, I hope you feel better soon. :wizard:

:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: to Cam!!!

Hi WISH Team!! I just wanted to share something very special with all of you. As you know, I am supposed to be in Columbus today with my WISH team buddies gettting ready for the big race tomorrow. As my transmission would have it...I am here...and was feeling a bit pouty faced about the whole ordeal. Well...guess who just called me? The Penguin himself! He wanted to know why I wasn't there with the rest of the bunch! The conversation was sparse as we had a horrible cell connection...maybe that is a good thing because the whole sentiment brought tears to my eyes! He told me he would see me in Chicago...and he will!!

If you ever for one minute thought it was weird to be a part of an internet group.....you could not have been more wrong! The support and the friends I have made here are incredible. For all the times I thought I could not do something...I have been encourgaed that I can....for the times I have doubted myself, I have been told I could not have been more wrong. For the times I have not wanted to get my butt out there and walk...I have been encouraged (sometimes stronger than other times :) to get out there and get the steps in. When I have been missing, I have been found! This is such a great group of people. And for those that have met in real life...what a treat!!

I will check back in a bit after I hear all about The Penguin getting his shirt and let you know what he has to say. My thoughts are that he will say someting very kind and encouraging!!

Anyway, I am going to get my shoes on and go for a little walk! I think I need to!! :cloud9:

Also, just needed to share my special moment!! Gotta love this WISH Team!!

Have a great day!!

Jen-- I will usually do a little light walking around to get loose before I run, especially if I am running first thing in the morning fresh out of bed. After I run, I do a slow recovery walk until I feel cool down sufficiently then stretch for about 10-15 minutes-- not just legs, but the my upper body as well.

I would strongly hesitate recommend stretch cold muscles. You are apt to hurt yourself that way. If you feel the need to stretch before your run, I would warm up first, then stretch and ease into your run. Of course you also want to make sure to stretch afterwards as well-- that's very important. Just my .02. :)

Liz-- OMG!!! How incredible is that!!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: I'm totally jealous! ;)

Wow - that's a great surprise Liz! After something huge going wrong like car problems and then getting a call you must be on :cloud9: now :)

Have a wonderful walk - I'm getting out as soon as I can finish a few things around the apartment. Have a wonderful rest of your day!

Oh Liz!!!! :goodvibes :cloud9: How amazing!!!! What a wonderful thing to have happen! You sure are right...what an amazing bunch!!!

Judy: Soooo glad to hear you're doing well. Sounds like you had a successful run AND good for you taking the time to check your form, stride, etc. That is soo important! You are doing really GREAT!!! :thumbsup2

Well....I feel SO MUCH BETTER now that I've run! I did 2.8 miles in 30 minutes. Not a personal best by any stretch....but I felt so good afterwards. I was in a comfortable stride and chose a tough route with two long hills. I ran the whole thing and felt really strong the entire time. So I'm happy :goodvibes . Plus that warm spring weather really lifts the spirits! :sunny:

Hey TEAM: I just got a reply back from the rep at SockGuy, and he said if we can finalize the design in the next couple of weeks we could get the socks in time for the Minnie Marathon at the beginning of May!!! Ooooh, even more reason for me to wish I could run the Minnie.
