Wk of Jul 30--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Good Morning Team: :surfweb: 83 degrees at 5:00am!!!

Scheduled rest day yesterday, so not too much to report. It's hot, hot, hot... I'm actually glad that I've gotten into the pool running routine because its an easy place to go to get out of the sun. Today's another SWOG and tomorrow I have the x-country race with my princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:. I'm planning on using all my beat the heat strategies we employed at WDW when we went last year over Labor Day. I'm bringing little fans and cool misters for the girls to stay cool.

Krista- That sounds really wierd your reaction to your run. I bet it was something you ate wasn't settling well. Good luck with your run today, and your 5K.

Mel- Glad your foot is feeling a little better. Seriously, I felt the same way as you about going to the pool. I don't really like going shirtless and wearing my swim suit in public. Plus, I felt really silly with my life jacket on. However, I just told myself it was what I needed to do for my training, and kept thinking about the big picture of getting ready for WDW. I just sucked it up and did it, and it has really been fine.

I like your state by state race idea. I'll have to think about it. The CRIM 10 miler in Flint, Michigan in August is a really fun festival of races. Wow, that Mount Desert Island Marathon sounds like a beautiful race. I couldn't find from the site whether they have a 1/2 marathon or not. Utica, NY is home of the Boilermaker 15K which has over 10,000 runners, but I've never run it so I can't say whether I'd recommend it or not. It's certainly a famous race. One final suggestion, you seem to be lacking the FLORIDA entry on your list!!!

Terri- Good to hear from you. Good work out on the elliptical.

Bekah- Wow, outside on the bike. WTG :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Stay cool!

OK, off to do my leg exercises.

I concur with everyone else. ITS HOT :sunny: and I'm sick of the heat/humidity already. It is messing with my training. Yesterday the heat index was 110 & today it is supposed to be 105. Today is the kids last day of summer. School starts tomorrow. And we cant go swimming or to the water park because Seth has a funky, drainage ear infection/fungus so he cant get in the water for 5 days & after that has to wear ear plugs. The boys have had their moments of driving me crazy this summer, but it has still gone by way too fast. I'm not ready for them to go back (and for Seth to start at all) They are very excited, though, so that's good.

My friends think I'm insane with my training. I have to get up at 4:30 so I can eat, let it settle & be out the door for my wog by 6:00 because of the heat. I hate treadmills so I would rather get up at 4:30 than use one. HOwever, because of school starting I guess I'm going to have to go to the gym on Friday's wog. Yesterday I did 3.5 14:31 pace. My legs felt like lead sticks since this was the first training I had done since 4 days off for Atlanta. One of the miles was 14:07 :)

Mel-for GA there is the Peachtree Roadrace 10k that is very famous, tons of people. I grew up with my mom doing that one. There is also a Georgia marathon & 1/2 mary in March. 2007 will be the first year for that one. I stopped at their booth at one of the expos I went to. For AL I would recommend some in Mobile (where I went to school) all the races around me are BORING. The Joe Cain 5k during Mardi Gras (and of course since it is during Mardi Gras they serve beer :drinking1 )is a fun event and the Azalea Trail Run 10k is a popular race. My parents have done both several times & enjoy them. Oh, and for TN, the Country Music Marathon (they have a 1/2 also) in Nashville is a great event. Glad your foot is doing better. I need some new shoes so I am going to ask about getting 2 different kinds. I've just been using the Aisics.

Kristi- :wizard: for you & your family. That is a tragic loss & my prayers are with you. :grouphug:

Krista-hope you get to feeling better. I guess your body was saying it needed a rest :teeth:

Christa-are you feeling better yet?

Rachael-Thanks for the advise. I have trouble slowing down because I want to PR on every run. I know, not what I'm supposed to be doing. I definatly want to have time to take pics & stuff. Mom & I had fun doing that at WDW.

Judy-get your butt out there & train. Dont lose momentum now. You can do it! Official training starts soon & you dont want to be behind now do you?! (did that work? :goodvibes )

How are your legs doing Tiffany? Weren't you having trouble with shin splints too? I seem to remember your doctor saying you had externally rotated hips just like mine. Did I remember that right? Are you hanging in there?

Mel - For MI, there is the Detroit Marathon. May be called international , can't remeber. You run both the Ambassador Bridge and teh tunnel (both links to Canada). I hear that's cool. Think tha thas a half too, but can't remember. There's also teh Crim. I think that's a 10K? I think MelR ran that one last year. Tehre's also the MAckinac Bridge RUn adn Coast Guard festival. Perhaps not as famous, but both rather unique.

This heat is killing. I know I'm a whimp, but with no a/c and after working outside in teh am, could not find the energy to put my suit on and walk to the pool. (I do have a big yard, but it's not THAT big). It' ssupposed to be 10 degrees cooler the rest of the week. Sad, that's still in my too hot zone.

Carrie - the CRIM is a 10 mile run. It is fun b/c the community really supports it and it is huge! They are out w/ food, beer and sprinklers. If you have a chance to do it, I highly recommend it! I can't come this yr. b/c it conflicts w/ phil's race schedule!

Krista - of course my first thought was that (well you know, nausea, fatigue, lightheadenss...pregnant) Hee Hee.

Bekah - I rode yesterday in the heat too! I can tollerate that much better than running in the heat!!

Yesterday I rode 25 miles and walked 2. Felt pretty good. Monday, I ran 3 on the TM and lifted. This morining, my back is sooooo tight. I'm thinking it is a stretch and rest day! The bad thing is that i'm going to be leaning over a sewing machine all day working on orienteering markers as I am trying to put on an orienteering meet and the markers seemed too expensive to buy w/ my personal $$.

Stay cool!

lol MelR. I thought it was longer. KNew it was 10 something. :confused3 Thanks for clarifying. On teh bright side, my brain correctly remebered who it was that ran it last year. :teeth:

Good morning everyone! How is everybody today? I am feeling much better this morning, I *think* I may have figured out my problem last night. I've been really watching my calories the past couple of weeks (lost 3 lbs  ), last night before I went to bed, I was counting how many calories I had that day and discovered I had less than 1000 calories! Yikes! So I ate a huge bowl of cereal and went to bed.

Tiffany--School starts already? Wow! That is early, we never started until right around Labor Day. I'm glad you had a good birthday, did you get any good running stuff? Stephen's birthday is Friday (the big 3-0  ), but I can't tell you what I got him. ;)

Mel-- :wizard: for that foot! As far as races go, I'd love to run the Marine Corp marathon in Washington DC and the New York City marathon looks fun too. The Thanksgiving Day 10K in Cincinnati is fun, it's the old Thanksgiving Day race in America, but it is on Thanksgiving morning. I'll keep thinking.

Jodi--I can't believe you are going to take another job. You are going to be BUSY!

Sunny--Feeling better?

I've been working on this post for over an hour, I guess that means I'm busy and I should just do my work. I hate that work gets in the way of my Dissing. :teeth:

Melissa--How funny! I thought the same thing about you a couple of weeks ago when you kept saying how tired you were. Maybe we both are?? ;) :teeth:

Morning all!!

Yesterday was just one of those work days that got completely away from me-- I had a nice time built into my day to workout..... and it totally didn't happen. Yesterday evening I had a dinner for work to attend that lasted from 5pm-9:30pm, so nothing doing there as well. Hopefully tonight, though :teeth:

Mel-- You and I must have a psychic vybe or something... I was just thinking about this very thing. There are a ton of marathons I would love to do-- in the U.S., Canada and further abroad. Just off the top of my head that are going on my list:

-- Mayor's Marathon: Anchorage, AK. (You said you wanted all 50 states, right?)
-- Kona: Kona, HI (See above)
-- Marine Corps Marathon: Washington, DC (My hometown marathon)
-- Washington's Birthday Marathon: Greenbelt, MD (My LITERAL hometown marathon. The little suburb I grew up in has a marathon-- I didn't find this out til last year. Definately a must do.)
-- NYC
-- Chicago
-- Toronto Waterfront Marathon
-- Paris (Hopefully my belated 30th birthday present for myself in a few years)

I'll post my whole list when I've finished with it later this week.

Carrie-- No AC!?! Yikes, I feel for ya! The person's house we stayed in last weekend didn't have it either. I was miserable. Ugh. :wizard: for at least a couple of good stiff breezes.

Back to work here....
Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Okay -- I posted parts of this on Monday and it didn't show up. All of my updates to the 100 day challenge from Monday and yesterday also seem to have reversed themselves. :badpc: I think it might have something to do my internet settings. Now that I have "cleared my cookies" maybe the problem will be resolved.

So, here we go again:

Thanks to everyone who commented on my 7 mile LW Thursday night. :grouphug:

Judy – I have to confess, I can’t walk anywhere near that pace. I have to jog very frequently to get around 14:00. My legs are so short and as soon as I try to lengthen my stride I get shin splints. If I try to increase the number of steps I take, my hip/hamstring rebels. So, I have resigned myself to building up my ability to jog once in a while JUST to be able to maintain the required pace. I am very worried that I won’t be able to do that as the distances lengthen, but that is what I am working for.

Kristi – Don’t let anyone talk you into new shoes if you feel yours fit. I tried that and ended up with blisters because of too much room in the shoes. The reality for me and my slightly longer now black nailed second toes is that it is not the shoes, but what I do with each step. It is physiological. I apparently slightly curl that second toe down with each step and it creates pressure at the back end of the nail bed. I don’t think there is anything I can do about it and I have had that issue for more than a year.
I also wanted to tell you how sorry I am to hear of your nephew’s tragic accident. My condolences to you and Chad and his family.

I am never going to be able to catch up on 5 days worth of posts, but wanted to stop in to say “hello”.

We had a great time in Busch Gardens/Water Country USA and the kids loved being there for the weekend. The only problem is that I ended up so incredibly sunburnt that it has been hard to sleep or work out or even wear clothes. The good thing is I shouldn’t burn at DL.

I did a mile on the treadmill last night in 13:40 but then quit in favor of 9 miles on the recumbent bike in 45 minutes. I was just exhausted and felt really out of shape. There was some drag in the treadmill belt and I think it made the wog harder than it had to be, but there weren’t any others open. I would have even settled for the one in front of the TV that was set to some reality show about tattoo artists.

I am really hoping to have something good to report soon. I seem to be in a funk that is impacting my outlook on everything (at this point I can’t even stand to read my depressing WISH journal entries ;) ). So much in life seems very fluid right now with DD counting the hours until she leaves for college, me dreading DS13 leaving for 3 weeks of camp on Sunday, and dealing with the impending stress of so many things. I think if I can re-focus on training for the ½ and stop beating myself up about not losing more weight, I might be able to pull myself out of this. Heck, I don’t have ANY excuse for being down when I think of what some of my fellow WISHers are bringing themselves through. :grouphug:

Oh, and BTW -- the heat index here today is going to be 113. It is dreadful just walking from my parking garage to my office (3 blocks) at 7 or 7:30 am. I can't even imagine training outside. I am hoping we can do some LWs outside very early Saturday mornings between now and DL otherwise I will go into that having trained almost exclusively on the TM. :sad2:

Well, I have so many deadlines looming and I really want to check in on some of the other WISH threads to see how everyone is, so I will be back later.

Love you guys, mean it.

Side note: OK, we did break down and buy a room a/c for the bedroom last year, so life is not THAT bad. As long as I get sleep, no one gets their head bit off. :p

I have a new love, and that's running on bridges! The one that crosses from Navarre to Navarre beach has a nice side pathway behind concrete that is basically thin metal bars extended out to a metal railing. Running on these is basically like running on a spring loaded floor. Yeah you have to go up and down during the mile long bridge, but the 5k we are running this weekend (Bushwhacker 5k in Pensacola Beach) is 1 way over one of these bridges at one point, so thought I could use the practice. Ran about 50 minutes for a long run on Sunday, guessing almost 5 miles around the beach and out and back over the bridge.

Last night the DW and I hit up the local track again for another 1x2.5 lap, 1x2, 1x1.5, 1x1 set of sprints with walking a half lap in between. We both nearly passed out again but she beat her time from a few weeks ago by several seconds and I crushed mine. She would start hers and I'd wait the typical time between our finishes for that distance and then go, which meant we were always racing to the finish. Does wonders for ones time if you're as competitve as we are. :)

Hope it isn't raining this weekend on the 5k, GL to everyone else racing as well...

Oh and did I mention we'll be at DisneyWorld Mon-Fri?

Good morning everyone. :sunny: It was so hot here last night we decided to sleep in the living room, on the pull-out couch, because the a/c works much better downstairs. However, we did not take into account the fact that 40-something bodies don't take as well to pull-out couches as they used to. I think I slept for about two hours. So, guess what I didn't do this morning. :sad2: Ugh. I am again going home early today to check on my mare. As soon as I take care of her I am getting on the TM. No matter what!

Krista - Thanks for asking. Mist is doing OK but Logic is suffering. I hosed her off at 7:00am. Already at that hour she was in a full-blown sweat. I am going home at 1 to sponge her down. My poor girl. :(

Mel - Umm, how about the New York City Marathon???? I just happen to be in New York! :yay:

Tiff - Oh thank you. I think after tomorrow when the heat dies down it will be easier, but this afternoon I am going to train. I really wanted August to be a good month, since vacation took too many days out of July.

Kevin - I see NYC is on your list too! :yay:

Cam - Oh Cam! I am so happy to see you! It seems like you have so many things going on. Plus this heat. You need to take care of Cam too, you know. And being totally selfish, we miss you around here. Anyway...for you...... :shamrock: :flower3: :dumbo:

Dave - Last night I had just started telling DH about the Empire State Games being in Westchester when the local news started doing a segment on an athlete from our area who is attending the games in Rochester this year. What a coincidence! I think it's a sign. I told him we'd probably have about 90 people staying with us that week. :lmao:

OK this part is for my WISH friends only....you know what to do....

I had lunch this past weekend with a friend of mine from high school. We talk almost every day but hardly ever see each other. Anyway, she gave me a good "talking to" because she thinks I might be suffering from depression. I never thought of that, but I think she might be right. As she described it, it's not the "sit in the corner and cry your eyes out" type of depression. That maybe - even though I feel so blessed and fortunate and grateful for all I have - all I have may be too much. I am always stressing and anxious and have too much to do and not enough money and it's taking it's toll. She might be right. I am always so tired. I have an appointment with my doctor next Friday and I will talk to her. I don't know how to handle this. Thanks for listening to me.

OK, off to do some "real" work... :surfweb:

Hmmm, Judy and Dave -- DH and I may have to make a trip to Rochester next summer to do a NY-based race. :o)
We definitely will keep the dates in mind when we are booking our DCL cruise/HH weekend, so that we can avoid conflicting dates if possible.

So, I am trying to remember -- do we have any WISH team members in the Plymouth, Massachusetts area? We may be there next weekend.

Hey, Judy -- you aren't anywhere near Hancock, NY are you? We are heading up there on 8/25 for performance weekend at DS13's performing arts camp, and heading back on Sunday. Was trying to figure out if brunch is a possibility.

I think I am going to do my 4 mile LW scheduled for this Saturday at the Y tonight. I figure I am going to squeeze in training sessions whenever I might be able to motivate myself. Now let's see if saying it makes me feel committed to doing it!

Mel,

Here are some ideas for runs in the Pacific Northwest and Canada (well mainly BC):
Vancouver Sun Run : Supposedly the largest 10K run in the world - through Vancouver and Stanley Park. In April.

The Victoria Half and Full Marathon: The beauty of fall on Vancouver Island makes for a scenic course for all beginner, intermediate and advanced runners. In October

Vancouver Marathon and 1/2 Marathon

The Portland Marathon is considered the best organised marathon in the US. It also has a 5 and 10km race (but no half). And the cutoff is 8 hours. (That's 18 minutes per mile. No problem, right?)

There's also the Seattle Half and Full Marathon

Out east, in the Maritimes there is The Marathon by the Sea

Oh and here's one for the really insane - the course consists of 125kms, three mountain summits and over 17,000ft of elevation change as well as the crossing of a major river. It's in Alberta and it's called the Canadian Death Race!.

Matt, you are going to DW next week?? Awesome.

We have a trip booked for August 15th but I am really thinking about cancelling it. I can't imagine being out in the parks in this heat and humidity.

All you Floridians, is it really unbearable down there this time of the year? This heat wave we are experiencing is brutal. Is Orlando like this most of August or could I hope it will cool off in a few weeks?

I am on week 7 of a 18 week Hal Higdon training plan that I am using for Chicago marathon on October 22nd and I am really feeling the burn. This week I have the following runs 4, 7, 4, rest, 7, 14 miles LR. The following week is similar with a 15 mile LR. I really think 5 days a week running is too much for these old knees. So I have decided to a try a 3 day a week plan they had in a Runnersworld mag. I am really hoping this will work for me so I can get in a few days of swimming and biking for cross training. Hope this works.

Cam, I really think this heat has put everyone in a funk. Just think the Fall smell will be in the air before we know it. :thumbsup2 (Not that I am wishing away summer. :sunny: )

Tiff, back to school already? I guess we have been as well but last year NC passed a law that no school will begin before August 25th.

Judy, how are your horses?

solo, nice marathon wish list! :Pinkbounc

Krista, only a 1000 calories? make sure you get those calories in or your body will go into starvation mode and not lose a pound.

No more treadmill for me, I am getting up early in the morning to get my run in. Really, I am! (Just trying to convince myself because I have NEVER done it before. I am just not a morning person. I can run at 10 P.M. so much easier.) OK, I said it, not I just need to do it!

Cam- you and Howard are welcome at our place any time. Our door's always open. Speaking of which the Rochester marathon and 1/2 marathon is Sunday, Sept 17th. There's no way I would be able to run it, but if you and Howard want to come out I'd be happy ot host you. Oh wait, let me think, you may be on another trip won't you? ;)

Another marathon that is supposed to have an absolutely beautiful course is the Wineglass Marathon in the heart of the Finger Lakes in Corning, NY. This is on Sunday, October, 1st.
http://www.wineglassmarathon.com/raceinfo.htm
Colleen- wanna come up and check the area out?

It's hot, it's humid, but isn't that why they invented Splash Mountain? And hotel pools? :thumbsup2

We're actually minorly worried about that storm Chris out there by Puerto Rico, going to keep a wary eye and might batten down the hatches before we leave just in case, sounds like Texas but they sometimes swing north up through here in the panhandle...

Now if we can run 3 times during the week while I'm down there, while playing theme park commando, that will be impressive... Best thing about living in FL now is you can just head to disney randomly...

Thank you so much, Dave! You are so generous to offer. Yeah, I think we may have a conflict that 9/17 weekend :goodvibes -- Actually, it hit me today when we drafted and sent the email to Andy's teachers that we are leaving 6 weeks from Friday! :Pinkbounc

I know we won't be doing the DL 1/2 next year so it is really fun to consider some other races around that time where we could meet up with some WISHers closer to home.

DH and I went on a 2hr.45min hike today in the mountains and it was, literally, 2 hours up and 45 mins.down. I couldn't believe how steep this hike was, I thought I would die! :rotfl: I'm just thankful we didn't fall all the way down, lol, boy we sure were cruising down that moutain. We did see a deer, which was cool. Last week we were out driving and came upon a doe nursing 2 fawns, it was a beautiful and incredible sight to see!

Mel - you should do the Bolder Boulder...it's and easy course, great weather and the Boulder folks really get into the spirit of things. I would be more than happy to walk it with you next year. :cool1:

Update about my WDW trip....my niece just got engaged and plans to marry on June 2nd, her older brother (my nephew) is planning on getting married 2 weeks afterwards. It looks like I'll have to reschedule my WDW trip for Jan.08...I wonder if I can put my deposit towards the following year? Iam so bummed! My manager suggested that I just do the 4 days that TNT pays for, but I don't know if I can to the world for just 4 days. I don't know.....
