Wk of Jan 8--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi everyone,

Congrats to all that completed their goals and to all those that have taken the first step by comitting to a goal.

This thread has motivated me to call the DR in the morning to make an appointment for my hip. I want to get healthy so I can be with you all next year :sunny:

::MinnieMo

Thanks for starting up this thread. I am now home and am already considering registering for the 1/2 again next year. In the back of my mind I think one day I would like to tackle a full but just haven't gotten my nerve up. I hope to find a few local 1/2's to work in now that this past weekend is behind us.

Everyone is sounding so upbeat and positive that it is so encouraging. Keep up the great work everyone!

The phone number for DVC registration is 407-938-3398. I tried to get the form for Minnie, but they never called me back and never seemed to have them. I finally gave up and just did the online registration.

Lisa...great to meet you this weekend! congrats on your finish time. For Minnie, I'm doing MFM up to 8 miles then a short taper.

Liz...diabetes is what got me into this, though not mine...my mother, my grandfather and his mother all have/had diabetes and heart disease. I don't want to be next.

Tammy...welcome back! It was cool running through the castle with you :)

karebear...I wanted to thank the 2005 WISH walkers. I NEVER would have thought about doing this if I hadn't found your thread and seen how much fun y'all were having. It's great to see so many of you coming back for 2007. I don't know that we're more organized...I came into this as an absolute newbie, so went digging for info and just listed websites we found throughout the year!

solo...sorry we didn't get to meet you in person! Maybe next year?

I am officially registered for the 2007 WDW half! I have the first annual sarasota half marathon in March, then Minnie in May, then 'rest' until time to train for WDW again!

I ill be running the 2007 1/2 I thought I would just stop by and kick my shoes off because you guys will be seeing me post here a lot. I'm so pumped for the 2007 I could burst. I'm getting back in the swing of running. The weather here in Wash DC is great all week (60's) so I'm going to take full advantage of the weather and get some good running in. The 2007 marathon will be here before we know it!

Also, My friend bought me one of those Garmin Forerunner GPS watches for runners as a Christmas present. If you can afford one go and purchase one. It is a great tool for training and will help during the actual marathon. I used it for the first time yesterday for my two mile run and was in awe about how great it works.

Lisa-thanks for your little piece of encouragement you handed out at TE. That was so thoughtful. I am also planning on modifying the MFM 1/2 program for the Minnie. Prob go to mile 8 like Mel said.

Mel-great meeting you Fri night. I wished I had been able to get there early enough to socialize before we sat down. I missed out on meeting everybody.

I am so phsyched about the Minnie now. However, my best friend that is supposed to come with me is having scheduling problems with her DH keeping kids because of traveling for work. So I'm not sure she's going to be able to come. I have got to find someone to talk into coming with me.

Kimickey-I love my Garmin! It is a great training tool.

Congrats to those signing up for next year. You will not regret it. I am still undecided about what I'm doing next year.

Me & mom did the 1/2 this year. Now dad wants to do the 1/2 next year. ::yes::

Hi everyone,

Your inspirational stories have made me make that next step and called the DR for an appointment. I will be seen tomorrow evening and will be having xrays this evening.

The chiro and PT haven't helped my hip/knee issue maybe the DR can?

I now WISH that I had done this last fall when the problem started.

I'm also going to purchase the MFM book since it took so many of you to not only the START (which is an accomplishment in itself) but to the FINISH also.

Hi All,
I just finished the half on Saturday....I sit here with a hot pack on it as I type. I too had decided not to do it and did not train due to a knee injury but decided to do it anyways and finished. I am not able to see my time yet- which makes me think I was over the official time. I was not near the end of the pack- but probably took about 3:45 per my estimation. When I look at the search results they don't even have a correct starting time for me- I certainly did not start the race at 6:01.... :rotfl2:

I am going to do either the half or full next year- but probably the half.

I was wonder...what is the MFM book?

Thanks!
Celeste

First of all, Celeste, CONGRATULATIONS on finishing! Awesome! :cheer2:

To answer your question -- MFM is "Marathoning for Mortals" by John Bingham and Coach Jenny Hadfield. It is very informative and includes training plans for walking, running, walk/run, or run/walk a 1/2 marathon or full marathon. Many people on here followed it to train this year. I trained to train until 10/2 when I started that training plan, which I think is a total of 14 weeks leading up to your event.

John Bingham calls himself the Penguin and subscribes to a philosophy that calls for an enjoyable experience during the event. Now that I have met him, I like him even more than I did just from reading his book.

I am so excited about all the new faces and old friends who will be joining the WISH team for 2007! :goodvibes I am signed up for the full marathon in 2007, and I can't wait! After Lily, Penny, Shane, and MelR's inspiring performance with the Goofy Challenge, I toyed with the idea of going for the Goofy. :scared1: But I think I'll start out with the full marathon and see how I feel for 2008.

For those of you looking for a fall challenge, join us in Anaheim in September for the DL 1/2 marathon. I got to see the castle medal this weekend, and it is great!

This week I will officially shift over to training for the MS150 charity bike ride from Houston to Austin (180 miles in 2 days), which means that most of my workouts will be geared toward cycling with running mixed in as cross-training.

Have a great week everyone!

Just a suggestion as an alternative to using the MFM half program for the 15 K- Hal Higdon's website has actual 15 K training programs and he advocates any combination of walking/running that the person is comfortable with.

Congrats to all the WISH finishers!!! It was great getting to meet many of you and the encouragement of some of you as you passed me after I had my meltdown was very nice. (Mel R, Christa, Bree and Ron, Frances, Carrie and DH are the ones I remember specifically but there may have been others). My neck is still red and swollen from the bee sting at mile 17- I cornered one of the FP residents today and he said it looks like a localized allergic reaction but my calf/hamstring is feeling better. I rode easy tonight and will either swim or spin again tomorrow.

The plan: Boston Run to Remember Half 3/12, St Anthony's Olympic distance tri 4/30, Minnie 15 K 5/7, FL Half IM tri 5/21, Mooseman Half IM tri 6/4, wkfire OD tri 6/18, Capital city dirt tri 7/?, Timberman Half IM 8/20, Skinnyman sprint tri 9/2, IM Wisconsin 9/10. Maybe another half IM and/or marathon later in the fall.

So I'll be running 4 half marathons and 1 more marathon this year but mostly in my preferred configuration of the run following a swim/bike warm up. From here on out, any running race I do will be on a triathlon training base. The first priority after some recovery will be strength training. I hate it but am now very convinced of the importance of it. On the bright side, in spite of this weekend's meltdown which was due to a combination of factors some out of my control, I don't hate running anymore.

So am I still allow to be a member of the WISH club if I'm going to be a tri geek:)

Still recovering from going Goofy this past weekend, so I'm giving it a rest all week. DH and I signed up for the Disneyland 1/2 and now we're planning our strategy for the 2007 WDW marathon weekend.
It was so wonderful to put names with faces this past weekend. Thanks to everyone for the cheers and support along the course. It really helped out a lot!!

Hi all................I too would like to part of the marathon 07 team!
I really want a mickey metal ( have 2 donalds ) but I have to be honest......

I am sooooooooooo scared!!! :scared: :scared: :scared:

I am just completely wiped out after the 1/2's, I am sure thats due to lack of training and as much as right now at this moment I would like to actually comit myself, I am, so afraid I won't! I have one major issue to work out and that is to quit smoking! I did this last year after my first 1/2, I came home ans said thats it! I quit. I did for 18 days then went back! I get so inspired after these races. I just wish I could keep the feeling!
anyway, I only have 2 cigs left and I didnt buy any this evening and I have a 3 week supply of the patch! so I am just gonna have to try it again! as far as the full marathon, well, Ill just sign up and go for it!
wish me luck see you all in january!

renee :flower3:

ooops! almost forgot to ask...............
training programs? most of you following a particular book?

any suggestions?

Wiskband- Every time you quit smoking you draw closer to quiting for good! You just keep trying girlie- that's what counts! One of these days- it'll be for good!!! I'm so proud of you for finishing the half again- you rule girlie!!!

All right, guys, can I let you in on a little secret? Shhhhh. . . don't tell Howard. I am afraid once I say this out loud there is no backing out. But, here goes. I am having serious medal envy and NEED a Mickey. I am seriously considering signing up for the full for next year. Yeah, I know, first I should try to complete the half with a better time, more running, etc. etc., but for some reason, I just feel like I should set this goal and then go for it. What do you think? I am going to be doing all the 5Ks I can manage, a 5 miler in May and the Disneyland 1/2 in September. Do you think I could pull off the full in January?

Where's Rhonda? Hey, akasleepingbeauty, are you game?

I think you can *definitely* do the full!! Especially after doing another 1/2 in September!!

I went a step further-- I never did a full before, but I just signed up for the GOOFY!!!! I figure if I really don't think I can do it, I can just do the full, but if I didn't sign up, I'd be upset if I thought I could do both and didn't!!!

WOW!! You go for it, Girl! :teeth:

I am home and finally having a few minutes to catch up on the WISH threads here. It was a fantastic and life-altering experience for me to do the 1/2 on Saturday. It was the perfect culmination of many months of training and I know I will do it in some form again and again!! Although I was quite anxiety-ridden right up until the night before, once the race started I felt an amazing sense of calm and just knew that Cam and I were on our way to claming our medals. It was so wonderful and I hope that anyone who is on the fence about doing it themselves makes the committment and registers so that they too can be a part of it.

I must say a special thank you to Cam for sharing the 1/2 with me on Saturday. As wonderful as the experience was, it was made even better having someone to share all 13.1 miles with. We talked, we shared headphones :), we encouraged each other, we took pictures - we did it all and had fun and still finished on time and in pretty great shape. My memories of that day will always include my dear friend Cam and I look forward to doing the Minnie 15K with her in May!

I will admit that I too am experiencing major medal envy - I really really want that Mickey medal and have been thinking about doing the full since about mile 12 of the half :rotfl: I knew right then I couldn't do it but I also knew that a year of training can work wonders! So, yes Cam - I am up for it and would LOVE the opportunity to share it once again with you!!!

As I expected, it was really fun meeting the other WISHers during the weekend - at TE, during the race, at MGM while we were cheering on those doing the full, and at the Boardwalk Bakery on Monday. How lucky we are to have such a great group of people to share our ups, downs, and all the rest with. Thank you all for your helpful information, your shared stories, etc. - they all made such a difference for me this year. I am somewhat of a lurker and don't post that much but I read everything and I know that without this group I wouldn't have been there on Saturday. So, thank you ALL and I look forward to sharing another year in training with you!

Hi Everyone!!

Sorry I didn't get to meet anyone @ TE on Friday, it would've been nice..., but I was with such a big family that coordinating it all was impossible. Next year I'll definitely meet you all...did I just say that??? Next year?? OMG

I know this isn't where you post times, but I finished in 2hrs 14min. & felt real good about it. I have to agree w/ what some others said though, it was way too crowded. Has it always been like this?? Perhaps I was in the wrong corral, too. I kept having to run in grass & such to get past people.

Despite all of this, I had such a terrific time. Such fun & I wasn't completely dead @ the end of it...which leads me to believe that perhaps I should sign up for the full?? I'm soooo scared, though. But like the rest of you, I have serious ME (medal envy).

Congrats to all my "board friends" who participated!! And to all of you who are thinking about doing this, just do it.

Hey Mel, what's the date on that Sarasota 1/2 in March? My mom's a "snowbird" & has a place in Sarasota & she'll be there in March...hmmmmm.

Jodi
