All right, guys, can I let you in on a little secret? Shhhhh. . . don't tell Howard. I am afraid once I say this out loud there is no backing out. But, here goes. I am having serious medal envy and NEED a Mickey. I am seriously considering signing up for the full for next year. Yeah, I know, first I should try to complete the half with a better time, more running, etc. etc., but for some reason, I just feel like I should set this goal and then go for it. What do you think? I am going to be doing all the 5Ks I can manage, a 5 miler in May and the Disneyland 1/2 in September. Do you think I could pull off the full in January?

Where's Rhonda? Hey, akasleepingbeauty, are you game?

Don't forget about teh half in April in Columbus!!! :cool1: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Christa-glad to hear from you. Congrats on your Goofy!!!!!!!You did awesome :cool1:

Maggie- We are always wanting new members. This is a great group, without whom I would have never made it across that finish line. You will love it here. I did WW while training (except for last 2 weeks & that had more to do with Christmas then training.) and I followed the MFM 1/2 program. It worked well for me. I went from couch to 1/2 in 20 weeks. You have plenty of time to get there. Start training now & you will fly across that finish line.

Mel-I know what you mean about that castle medal. Especially after seeing it at the expo. Wow that thing is huge!

I am starting to get really excited about the Minnie! I can't wait to be back there & see you guys again. Oh-and there had better be a medal!

Yes Jodi, there were that many. Unfortunately they should have given the half the same courtesy as the full. Instead of 2 separate starts, there was only one start--so there were corrals A-H--which #'s 8. So assuming they are equally split (they are not--H had wayyyyy more in it than any other corral)...it is roughly 2000 people squashed in one corral.

According to the results, 11,761 people finished and there were 16,098 signed up. Which by the way, 10,131 were female.

I was looking at the map and it seems like it would be difficult to come up with a split start for the half using the route they did. If they wanted to finish at TTC like 2005 then it would be fairly easy, but getting busses there at the end would be difficult.

It will be interesting to see if they make any changes due to the problems this year. They seem to try to fix whatever problems come up for the next year.

I think there were around 13,000 that did it last year and it only took 20 minutes to get everyone out. Someone probably figured that it would be about the same this year.

I wonder how many people started, though. There was an ocean of people behind Rhonda and me but apparently only about 1200 of them "finished". I know for a fact that a "significant" number of people got swept. We met a Team in Training coach at the airport who said 4 of their team were swept at the 3 mile mark! I would have been devastated.

Liz -- I would LOVE to join you and Lily in April, but probably can't because of my trial schedule. When I looked at my calendar on my return Tuesday, I realized the Minnie fits the schedule but I'll be lucky to train enough in April. I will miss you guys and be thinking of you!

Thanks for the warm welcome. :earsboy:

I am looking forward to participating with such a motivating group. I can't wait to start reading MFM.

Until then - I am following Hal Higdons 5k plan - gotta start somewhere. :goodvibes

YEAH, Maggie! Isn't it amazingly fun just to start? The motivation just suddenly appears. And if/when you find your motivation flagging, we will be here supporting each other. :goodvibes: :grouphug:

I finished my first 1/2 on one of Hal Higdon's plans, so I think they're pretty good!!! You'll get there!

Hi everyone!

Well I finally saw the DR last night and got mixed results:

Positive - no fracture
Negative - scroliosis in the base of spine, sacrum out of place due to this, likely a nerve injury.

I have an apt with a PT and a Sports Orthopedic to see what can be done. Until that point I am on muscle relaxers and pain killers.

This is basically the same thing the chiro and other PT said but nothing they did has helped so far.

Hope everyone is recovering well from their Mickey weekend and it is great to see new people joining the group. I guarantee that you will love it here!

First of all, Celeste, CONGRATULATIONS on finishing! Awesome! :cheer2:

To answer your question -- MFM is "Marathoning for Mortals" by John Bingham and Coach Jenny Hadfield. QUOTE]

Thanks for the information- I am signing up for the half today and am going to sign my husband up for the full as well. I am interested in the idea of the full....but he would do better at that than I would and if we each run one- the other one can watch our son. :teeth:

Well they successfully split the whole--so I'm sure they could have done something. The course was already brand new anyway.

Additionally--the 13,000 from last year was the total for BOTH races. And that was a split start with the full on one side and the half on the other. They followed the same beginnings as the current full course and just stopped when they passed GF and got back to the TTC parking lot.

Additonally--for the full...they officially said it only took 13 minutes. I know this b/c as I was speeding in after my miserable day--they cut the mats off officially at 7:13:00 I finished many seconds later. The half had the same # of corrals, so it roughly had to be the same.

Somebody figured wrong--seeing as they know how many participants they had since they shut down registration and they knew they needed additional corrals.

The kids races were a fiasco as well and IMHO--they were more concerned about the increased revenue without having a well thought out plan how to handle the corrals and the split days.

Sorry--I still got that chip on my shoulder about it and haven't thought out a well articulated letter to send to WWS just yet regarding the weekend. ;)

We had one teammate get swept at mile 8 of the half and no others for the half or full.

I think Disney, after last years sweeping fiasco (big bru-ha-ha outside of MK affecting several of our WISH team in 2005), did an excellent job of communicating the sweeping opportunities.

In discussing with our coaches and staff members--sadly, not all TNT teams are the same and there are some slacker coaches in the bunch. This does not speak for the organization as a whole--but the sweep times are real and our coaches and our staff for Central Florida do an excellent job of communicating the seriousness of this.

Our one person who was swept was devestated--but not so much so b/c she got swept--but then it took the bus longer to reach the finish line than she would have taken walking. 2 hours--no food--ONE powerade or water--no facilities.

So it seems they haven't figured out that dumb sweeping thing in full just yet.

Interesting--yours describes me to a "T" except for the nerve injury part. Your sacrum can move for many reasons. You need someone who can put it back and then train you in core stability with therapy exercises and ultimately pilates or equivilant.

I have mild scoliosis and had the sacrum issue--which due to my knee surgery, I haven't been able to keep up with the exercises as I should. But I will get back into them.

Once they get your sacrum in place (could take several visits with a PT who is REALLY good with "manual" therapy)--you can start using a "sacro-wedgy". Your therapist can help you learn how to use this. This is what I had to use b/c though my therapist put it in place, my sacrum would go back out. Once I started using the wedgy, it stayed. I need to get new cushions though. They wear out.

As they say--it isn't always a quick fix...it is the cumulative use that will help you.

Thank you Lisa for taking the time to explain the injury and the treatment you received. My DR made it sound like the shifted sacrum was just something I would have to get used to. She went as far as suggesting steriod injections into the nerve. I was very uncomfortable with her suggestions and asked for a referal to a specialist which I received. I do start PT next week and will see the specialist on 1/25/06.

Question - I can either wait till the 25th and see the sports orthopedic or go sooner to a regular orthopedic - which would you all suggest?

BUMMER!!!!

I carried a keychain sized dig. camera w/ me for the full. I had about 5 pics on it, but my battery died on the way home and they are all gone!!!

Bree and Christa let me know if you have any that are worth sharing. I will upload the one's i have from the 1/2 on image station and share my album.

We are safely home and the boy is napping in his bed! He said he wanted to go back and sleep in the hotel!!! Oh well, maybe next year.

I'd be concerned about the nerve thing--how did they come to the conclusion that was what was causing it?

I would see a runner/walker friendly ortho--which might be a sports one. I happen to have a friend who is a PT and very good with manual therapy (a philosphy that I am wholeheartedly subscribe to).

I'd be more interested in getting it fixed properly than wasting time with someone just to get relief sooner. B/c I was so focused on relief myself--I went with a Sports PT who was available (at a hospital) and her specialty was back surgery patients, not mysterious ailment patients. The first PT I saw--while a lovely lady--was a month or so of wasted time and co-pays as her approach was seemingly hands off. She tried to strenghten my core--before the problem was even fixed and she hadn't a clue of what the problem was. My 2nd PT (my friend) figured it out on the first visit and provided relief I hadn't felt in all my visits with the other PT.

So I say hang onto the sports ortho appt and forgo the other PT if you are sure that the sports ortho knows what they are doing.

Sometimes sacral ailments will cause pain in the periformis muscle (sp?)--muscle just above the glute (sort of) and can even cause sciatica if it gets bad enough. Mine did get bad enough that I was getting some sciatica---the muscles near the region of the mild scoliosis were having a hand in that. The tipping--caused increased stress in that area as everything is trying to compensate for the ailment.

I'm wondering if that is why the docs are saying it is a nerve issue.

Ugh. I'm having a lousy day. Actually, a lousy couple of days. I want to go home and crawl under the covers. :sad1:

But I do have a question first....

What do you guys think about refilling water bottles? Do you think it's true that bacteria can build up in there and make you sick? Can you fill it up only a couple of times? Do you never refill one? Just wondering as I try to drink as much water as I can every day.

Thanks. :upsidedow

Judy

You know honeibee--I do it. But when we were in England, I actually noticed that their water bottles were labeled with warnings against this. So I try not to do it--but I'll throw in some dish soap and hot water if I'm too concerned. Usually this is on the same day though that I reuse and I skip the cleaning.

You can get an inexpensive reusable water bottle for cheap--and then just by gallon waters if you wish to have that water. It will be cheaper--and the germ police won't be making any charges at you. I have one of those sports bottles with straws. I tend to drink more if there is a straw. Hold's about 16 ozs (at least) of water.

Hi, Honeibee! I refill my water bottles all the time, just as I do my 24oz water cup. When I am at work, I run very hot water from the water cooler/heater and rinse it real quick before putting fresh water in it. I have heard the bacteria thing, but just figure that can happen to my cup too. I've been fine so far!

BTW, sorry you are having a bad couple of days. :wizard: :goodvibes:

Thanks for your replies. I refill one for a couple of days, then start a new one. I was kinda wondering how much of that was a marketing ploy by the water companies to keep us buying.

Thanks, Cam. :goodvibes I'm going home soon to take care of the girls and watch Moonstruck or my new Golden Girls DVD. That's about all I'm good for today. :worried:

Sounds great. Can you watch Golden Girls while on the dreadmill? :teeth:

ETA: the only exercise I have done since carrying my suitcase in the house is walking to and from the courthouse each day. :( Howard's surgery is tomorrow, so I don't anticipate I will be doing much this weekend either, but will have a gym bag in my car come Monday and will get back in the habit of heading to the Y after work each night. Have to keep up with the big :dog: :dog2: :pug: , you know! ;)
