Wk of Feb 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Amy - Thanks for understanding! Funny SIL said that they'd love to run a marathon, but don't have the time with their 3 kids. SO, it's probably just jealousy, but my db takes life too seriously anyway adn have always seen me a s a goof off (I think having no kids and loving WDW doesn't help that one).

Cam - I forgot to add this last time - Check out the training schedules. WHen I was checking out the half, dh told me that the training scheudles were pretty similary for time during the week (an extra weeknight about every other week, though). the biggest diff was teh LRs. ANd that is a big chunk of time, but at least it's on Saturday.

Dave - I agree with Craig (who wouldn't? lol). Too much or too hard of a surface could do it. You are icing, right? :wizard:

Happy Monday everyone! Checking in during my lunch hour so I better make this quick. I went to the gym this morning and rode the stationary bike for 10 miles. I still need to work up the courage to ask the staff at the gym how the weights work. There are like 50 different pieces of Nautilus equipment, and I don't know how to work any of them. I know it's crazy, but I'm just too shy to ask. Maybe I'll summon up the courage tomorrow. (Of course I have been saying that since I joined the gym last July!)

Heather -- I know how you feel about that. I finally worked up the courage to schedule an equipment orientation session. I did it on a Saturday at 7 or 7:15 am, so that I wouldn't be self-conscious with a lot of people around watching me try to figure out the equipment. Even now, I try to do my strength training in the early morning when it isn't crowded. I also keep my shuffle on (on a lanyard around my neck inside my tee shirt). I find that if I am listening to music and focus on the muscle groups being worked, I am not as worried about who is around. I also don't let anyone rush me. I think once you get started you will be so glad you found the courage. Sending a  your way!

Craig - I moved from a primarily teaching position at Middlebury to a research position at the University of Rochester Medical Center. I wanted to see how far I could take the research. They offered a much, much better position for my wife (who is also a faculty member here), and we're a lot closer to home and family in Western PA (Go STEELERS!!!).

Cam, MelR, Craig, Amy, Carrie, and everyone else: Thanks for the advice about the shin splints. I have probably made the rookie mistake of trying to do too much too fast. But I was feeling so good until yesterday. I'm trying to learn from last time I got shin splints. It's actually not as bad as that time - because I continued to run on it last time. This time I'm going to listen to my body and rest the leg. It's just frustrating because I am trying to go really slowly and I've been stretching (which I hate to do and didn't do at all last summer) - you all know I'm taking that yoga class too right (do I have to show you the cow?). I starting to accept the fact that my body is older and needs to go much, much slower than when I was 18 or 20. sigh...

I just hope I don't lose the fitness I gained in the 3 weeks I've been exercising.

:goodvibes I made my first commitment to the Marathon. Okay...not my first real commitment, that started when I actually got out there and ran. But my first financial commitment. And for some reason I've got jitters and butterflies just taking this step. I just booked my BWV unit for Marathon W/E. Decided to arrive on Friday night and stay near the airport. We'll check into BWV on Saturday and we're heading home on Wednesday. I guess this means I've committed to the Full as well :teeth: . I've been putting this off because it suddenly becomes VERY REAL now that I've borrowed points to book this room.

EEEEEKKKKKKK. Have I lost my mind???

Now I'm just stressing a bit over my training plan? I just don't know the best method to train for the race. It probably seems like I'm obsessing...ok I know I'm obsessing over this. But I want to do it right....I don't want to set myself up for failure. For now I'm using Galloway's plan for the 5K I'm running in April. After that I'm not sure. I'll have a solid 8 months to prepare for the marathon...which is more than needed. So I really need to figure out the best method, etc?! I'm considering moving on to Galloway's 10K training plan for May-Aug. And then from there switching to one of Bingham's Marathon training plans. :confused3 Does this make any sense?!?!

Dave: Sounds like you know how to handle the shin splints. Rest and Ice should get you back good as new in no time. I know it's tempting to run, especially since you've made such great progess. But you won't lose it! The yoga is great! I can't even picture the Cow Position :rotfl: ?!

Same here! :rotfl: Craig, finance, I would have never have guessed you are a numbers guy, you write so eloquently, I guess the Language Arts area!

Craig, I finished the full just a few minutes after you! I saw that flag guy too, he looked terrible. By chance did you see these two little male runners, I think they were from Brazil. They had matching outfits which is why I noticed them. Anyway, they blew by me at about mile 6 and then I caught up to them and passed them around World Showcase. Both were walking, one was looking pretty rough and the other was trying to encourage him that last .5 of a mile. So many stories that day! I just love to hear everyone's experiences, thanks for sharing yours.

Amy, you are welcome to run with me. I have to warn you that I am pretty quiet, I am really not a talker when I run because I run all my training runs solo with a MP3 player. I ran about 10:30's the first half and then about 11:00's the second half. I am hoping to drop 15-20 pounds this Spring, so we will see what my pace will be in the Fall.

Amy that is AWESOME!!!  :cheer2: :cheer2:

See you in the corrals!! :woohoo:

Did anyone order any official race photos from ASIoders.com? I received an email today saying the deadline to order is coming up. I have a pretty good castle shot photo I want to get, but don't know if I should get any of the "enhancements" on the photo?

Has anyone received the photos yet?

Also, when do our official marathon certificates come?

Colleen

Dave- take advantage of being an academic type and go use the UR pool. Water running is good cardio, simulates the motion, and is...pounding free. PD for it feeling better. BTW 'shin splints' can be one of two things- either a stress fracture(less likely in your scenario) or an anterior compartment syndrome. A compartment syndrome is inflammatory so NSAIDs, ice, and rest are the best treatment. The most common cause is doing too much too soon. Probably the second 3.9 miles with the running this weekend. A few days now can save you much pain in the long run.

Cam- you are an athlete!!! Kick those self doubts back into submission.

MelR- hope the boy is feeling better. Good thing you got that new TM.

Judy- where are you? still buried in the snow? did you get the horsie(Mist)?

Craig- good to see you back. Are you going to do the Boston's Run to Remember race Mar 12? There's both a 5 mile and a half marathon option.

Mel- I could have used someone else taking my pharm exam this morning. this is our third semester w/ pharm and it was the most poorly written exam I've taken on that subject. I hope you had a good conference at the World last week.

Carrie- PD for your foot and your Dad.

Nancy- PD for Barry's mom and your family. Do the 5K at least Minnie weekend. You can do it. It's still 2 1/2 months away.

Amybeth- pick some races between the 5K and the start of the marathon training program(about late aug/early sept) and train for those. yes, the year long goal is the marathon but having some littler goals in between helps with the motivation.

I was supposed to do 7 miles today but our exam was actually at 10 am rather than 9 am. Who knew- no one in our class did, that's for sure. So I got a later start and only got 6.44 miles in before my meeting. After that meeting I went and swam the 2400 yard muscular endurance workout. I did walk home from school this morning and after swimming so I did another 2.4 miles on foot but...I don't count trips back and forth to school for any mileage. It just has to happen most days at least once and I try to ride bike most of the time as it's about 5 minutes rather than a 20 minute walk.

I think that my body is finally settling into this training load and the 2 workouts a day thing. The way the training plan is written is 2 sports/sessions a day on 3 days a week and no days completely off. I consider Fridays when I just swim my rest day now. It's only actually about 12 hours a week at this point- running ~30 miles, biking ~60 miles, and swimming 4.5 miles. Running miles are higher and biking miles are lower to accomadate the NE winter.

Lynne - Just reading about your workouts makes me tired!!!

Nope, not tri's for me. Then again, I only swim under water. Hate doijng real strokes! :teeth:

Wow- go offline for a couple of days & miss alot!!!

Amy- I know what you mean. Last year after I registered, I started having those "what have I done" feelings. Trust me, once you gain more confidence in your training, it will go away & be replaced with utter excitement. :cool1: And just ignore those that try to belittle what you are doing. It is a big deal and we know you can do it.

Dave-be careful. Those shin splints are evil.

Cam- I agree with everyone else. If you put your mind to it, I have no doubt you will be able to complete the full (but I understand, because I'm trying to make the same decision)

Carrie- That's great about your dad. DH dad went thru chemo & it really takes alot out of you. :wizard: for him. And enjoying race day & soaking up the atmosphere is why most of us choose to do the WDW marathon.

I did 3 miles on the dreadmill & ST today. Its warming up this week so hopefully I'll be riding my bike tomorrow.

If you have used Jeff Galloway's training methods, I have a question for you! :teeth:

Can somebody please explain his run/walk method to me? I don't know why I'm confused :confused3 , but I think that he encourages us to run for x number of minutes and then walk for x number of minutes continuously throughout our entire distance. Now is this only for the LR and Race or for training runs as well? I don't know why I'm confused but I'd be really curious to hear from anyone who has run using his training plans. I'm really beginning to seriously think about the Full Marathon and the idea of walking "breaks" feels a little safer to me LOL!

So please, let me know if this method worked for you and help me demystify it. TIA!!!! :goodvibes

edited to add:
I found an article in Runners World that demystified it for me. The person who wrote the article gave me a better understanding of the different ways you can use Galloway's methods. I think I'm going to try it this week on my LR and maybe even on my training runs to compare with last week's effort. What i plan to do is run 1 mile....walk 60 seconds.....run 1 mile etc. I'll be able to compare this week's runs and distance to last weeks to see if this is a viable option. I'll also be able to see how I feel physically at the end of the run in comparison. Did anybody use this method for the marathon? Thanks! :teeth:

I don't use him--but he is just talking about intervals.

I do 4:1's right now--4 minutes running, 1 minute walking.

Our coach who got this from John Bingham--though I'm sure Galloway would agree--that instead of running out of steam at the end as happens to some who insist they must run this distance--the intervals can help you shave time. SUre enough--when I started doing them...my net times were about the same and then started to decline on my training runs. :cheer2:

Melissa and Colleen

I'm glad to have surprised you. Yes, I'm really just an applied mathematician with all of my degrees in finance. Any philosophical component in my personality has come from mentoring undergraduates, not from academic training. Heck the only philosophers I know are from the Monte Python skit in the Philosophy Department at the Univeristy of Walamaloo, where they sing the little ditty about their field:

John Stewart Mill of his own free will
on half a pint of shandy was particularly ill
Plato they say could stick it away
half a crate of whiskey every day
Aristotle Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle
Hobbes was fond of his dram
And Rene Descartes was a drunken ****
"I drink therefore I am."

There's a lot more, thankfully all easily found on the internet. Who would have thought such a valuable tool could be used for such wonderful purpose?

I also must have passed the 2 little guys near the end, but I didn't notice them. I suppose I should have because anyone I passed near the end must have been in really bad shape.

Lynne

My next effort will be the James Joyce Ramble 10K on April 30. Martha is also running it so we can stand together in the corral. I may be ready for a half in the summer, but for now I'm taking it easy.

Dave

Lynne is spot on, pool running is incredibly hard work and excellent training without pounding your legs. I did a bit of it years ago rehabilitating one knee surgery, and it is tough. I would have guessed UR. In my field they are really hot. The most prestigious journal in finance (JFE) is edited there.

And Amy

Good for you. We're also booked at the BWV, arriving Friday early and leaving Tuesday. You'll like the course. Every road section leads to something interesting to look forward to pretty quickly.

And . . . I did 10,000 meters plus a few more today on our indoor track, 50 laps but the track team was training and I was always in the outside lane trying not to get run over by guys running 5 minute miles and girls running 6 minute miles. You hear the thunder behind you and get as far to the outside as possible.

Happy training all.

Craig

Dave - I hope you are getting some relief from the pain :grouphug:

Craig - It is great to "see" you back here. You've been missed! BTW - I'm an accounting major (MBA program) but right now I am almost at the end of Financial Mangement (thank the good lord). I really have to :worship: to you as this finance course is really something else. I miss my undergrad courses :teeth:

Judy - Please check in if you can. I hope you are during okay with your new addition in the blizzard :grouphug:

AmyBeth - Try to listen to those here that will say "yes you can" and be behind you through all the ups and downs. It has taken me sometime but lately I have come to see pure jealousy for what it is. Craig helped me earlier this year after I had a problem relative with words similar to the effect of "try it then tell me what I'm doing doesn't meet your standards." I used something very similar with that very un-dear relative and I felt so much better about the whole thing - though she may never speak to me again. Her loss

As for me I have cancelled all of my therapy appointments for the week until after I see the new ortho. I spoke with a PT friend that was worried about what the PT's were doing to me in the pool. I will be erring on the side of caution and will wait until the MRI to see what is really going on before going any further.

Hope everyone is doing great!

Okay, so my run totally rocked tonight!! I am getting excited about running again. :woohoo: :woohoo: I did 3.34 miles, I would like my pace to be up a little bit, but I haven't seriously trained in 3 weeks, so I have to be realistic and know it may take me a couple of runs to get my speed back. And I've been running at an incline of 1.5 instead of 1.0 to get ready for Nashville's hills, so that may be why I'm running a tad slower, at least that's what I'm telling myself. :rolleyes1

Melissa--Glad that the boy is feeling better. There is nothing worse than a sick kid, except for maybe a sick dog. Did I mention I have one of those? Hines has a "ridiculously infected ear" says the vet and guess who gets to clean his ear out with cotton balls? Yes, I love my dog. :teeth: Stephen and I both agree that kids will be a piece of cake after having a puppy. (Shush! Don't burst our bubble. ;) )

Lynne--All I have to say is you are crazy. But I admire your dedication!!

Colleen--Order your marathon picture! The quality is good, Stephen and I made a really neat shadow box with our pictures and medals. I'll have Stephen post a picture to show you guys, I would post a picture, but I'm posting deficient. :teeth:

Dave--Another vote for pool work-outs. Stephen did pool running for shin splints and runners knee, he actually was stronger after weeks of pool running.

Tiff--Where are you staying for the Country Music Half? We haven't made ressies yet. Where do you suggest? I've been to Nashville twice in college for Dove Awards and Gospel Music Association (I was a broadcasting major), we stayed downtown, but I think we'd be better off in the suburbs.

Heather--I know what you mean about being intimated by the weight lifting machines. I only lift weights at the rec center when Stephen is with me and can show me how to use the machines.

I better get off here, it's pretty late and I need my beauty sleep. :lmao: Talk to y'all tomorrow!!

Colleen -yes, order your pics. Both my niece and I ordered a couple of the shots they took. For the enhancement, they put the race logo in a corner (either the 1/2, full or Goofy - you specify what you want).

I'm also making a shadow box with the pics, my race number and medals. One of these days I'll get to finishing it.

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick post from work. I had a question, what type of running clothes should I be looking for this time of year? What materials should it be made of, etc?

I heard from the guy that organizes the runs (running club) and he said that although the newsletter doesn't come out for another two weeks - I am welcome to join them at any time now. All that I am worried about is the type of clothes needed.

TIA,

Jodi

Hi all!

Registration is in the mail for teh full! (DVC form must be mailed. :( )

My 3 miles went well last night. The cusihion from teh snow helped my foot I think. :p Foot fells good this am too. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

As usual my wonderful dh left me a v-day card in my truck this morning. He left an extra surprise too. A sticker that had runing shoes and the definition of runnig. ALso, there was this phrase:

The greater the challenge, the greater the glory when completed.

OK, it's not an exact quote, as my brain is tired and I left it in the car, but you get the picture. I think that all of us who have completed this great challenge will agree that the glory was, and is, great! So, for all of you taking on this challenge for teh first time, just take it one run at a time and it will be worth it in the end!!!

Jodi--Make sure you are wearing cool max or moisture wicking clothing. I get a lot my running clothes at Target and I watch Dick's for sales. This time of year you can do one of 2 things: layer or buy the heavier cool max clothing, or you can be like me and do both. :) When I run outside in the cold I usually wear a cool max singlet, cool max long sleeved shirt and a running windbreaker or a heavier cool max shirt; on the bottom I wear running tights and over my tights heavier cool max pants. I also wear a hat and gloves. I'm the type of person who is ALWAYS cold, but when I'm wearing this and I run outside, I am never cold, in fact I sometimes take off my top layer shirt or jacket because I'm hot.

My favorite cold weather clothing items are: Mizuno Breath Thermo long sleeved shirt and pants (kind of expensive, but worth it), my New Balance Bio Cool shirt, Nike tights, and my Helly Hansen jacket and hat. Hope some of this helps.

Thanks Krista and Terri! I am glad you both like your pictures. Krista, I would love to see your picture if Stephen could post it.

Also, Krista and Tiff, when is the Country Music Half?

Minnie, good for you. I would wait until the MRI results are back too. You must be tired of all the poking and prodding going on. PD to you. :wizard:

Carrie, congrats on getting in your full marathon registration. How long have you been a DVC member. Do you like the membership. What would be your advice if someone (me :wave2: ) was thinking about buying in now?
