How long have you been a DVC member. Do you like the membership. What would be your advice if someone (me :wave2: ) was thinking about buying in now?

Colleen

Colleeen - Been a member since 4/04. There are many others that have been longer. My advice is to buy wher eyou want o stay, check out resales and ask lots of questions. ;) Generally, if you got at least every other year and stay at at least a mod, it's worth it.

jodi - many sports stores are having awesome sales right now! I got an under armor jacket/sweatchirt for under my windbreaker for half off. Run to the stores now! ;)

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

My darling wonderful amazing husband gave me a Garmin Forerunner 201 for Valentine's Day this morning! Isn't he the BEST!?!?!?! :cloud9:

Mel - Was there a post about resorts for next January? Did I miss it?

Melissa & xterratri & Minnie & Krista - Thanks for looking for me!

Holy cow what a three days I just had!

Saturday is a rest day for me but since Mist was coming I was busy running around like a nut getting things ready for her. She arrived Saturday morning and what a doll she is! I love her already. She needs to be cleaned up a bit, but what a sweet sweet personality. What a laid back horse! I'm so used to wound-up Thoroughbreds. Mist just takes everything in stride. She's as calm as could be. :goodvibes

I however was a wreck all day and by the early afternoon when I saw she was all settled in, I fell asleep for two hours. I NEVER sleep during the day, but man was I shot. :crazy2:

So, doesn't going thru the emotional wringer count as cross training? :confused3

Yes, we were in the 30" zone. Lucky us. We got 30" of snow on Sunday. We had some drifts that were 4' high. It took DH six hours to plow our driveway. I shoveled.

So, does shoveling snow count as cross training? :confused3

I did get in a LW in the morning but I was soooo tired....

Yesterday we both stayed home. I did my TM routine in the afternoon, but I was still dragging my behind.

Last night I wasn't feeling well. I felt a cold coming on.

Then this morning I got up with all intentions of going on the TM but I had such a wicked sore throat I just went back to bed. I feel totally shot. And now I am mad at myself for not working out. Wed is usually my rest day so I am trading tomorrow for today. Should I have exercised? I might have strep throat. I should have just got on the TM anyway.

Thanks to everyone who was asking for me. I don't usually get on the computer on the weekend. And certainly not this past weekend. I read thru everyone's posts so far, and man, we have a lot going on here. I love the enthusiasm and support. This place is the best. Who started this anyhow? BIG THANKS to whoever did. Was it you, Mel??? :cheer2:

Judy

Judy -- So glad to hear that Mist is safely ensconced in your loving family! :lovestruc

Sorry you aren't feeling well. Hope you get better soon.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! :grouphug:

lol Judy. It took me a minute to remeber that Mist was a horse.

If you feel that bad w/o training, it was probably good to get rest. You'll feel better sooner if you don't push it ttoo much. If you do have strep, wait at least until the fever's gone to start.

Hello

So many posts, so little time!

I'm off to the gym to generate "Sore Butt Wednesday" :lmao: Ugh. I don't wanna go. Somebody make me go! I don't wanna play today :furious:

Sunny

Go! :thumbsup2

Believe me, you'll feel worse if you don't!

Judy

Go Sunny Go!!!!! Now, someone make me go check out the fitness center on the undergraduate side of campus where they have a pool so I can do some water walking.

Thanks Carrie, another question, over on the DVC board you can rent or trade points. I notice a lot of sellers are new to the DIS. Is that a concern? Is there an official contract between the owner and the buyer? How do I know the owner/seller is legit?

About renting points, I would go with someone w/ more posts rather than new to the DISboards. It is not an official contract; it is a private agreement between the DVC owner and the renter. I'm sure that Cam or Heather could give more of the legalese but basically it's matter of trust. That being said I have rented points. I wanted to go to HHI before our own points became available so I rented from another member. I ended up changing my spring break plans and we used the points in October at WDW rather than Mar at HHI but that worked out because I had been in touch with the owner and honored my purchase even when originals plans changed. Would I rent points again if I needed more than I currently own for something? Yes, I would.

I am extremely happy with the DVC purchase and add on that I did almost immediately. I had lost 2 grandparents the year prior to starting med school and WDW is a great place to bring my remaining grandmother. For me, it's about family and I know that how I use my DVC membership can adapt as my life changes. I've already reassured my sister that even if the family moves to FL, I will retain the DVC points.

Cam, Mel(Chimera), other DVC owners want to chime in? There are a number of us in this group.

On DVC -- I know it is cliche, but my only regret is not joining sooner. We bought at BCV on our Disney cruise in June 2002 and have enjoyed many trips on our points, including one in August 2003 when we took my now-deceased parents and Howard's parents and got a 1BR and 2 studios at BCV for a week. It was an opportunity we could not have afforded without DVC and I thank God that we did it. We now own points at BCV and we just bought points at HH in a private resale transaction that we will use just for our annual family Thanksgiving trip.

Many DVC owners who rent points come up with a contract that they want their renter to sign. I'd go with someone who has been on the DIS for a while. I have a friend who posts points for rent every once in a while but has had so many people cancel on him that it is hard for him to be trusting of someone who wants to rent.

THanks Dave and Judy, I went! Topped out my leg presses with 515lbs today :cool1:

Now Dave GO :thumbsup2 check out the fitness center. In addition to pool running, you may find elliptical trainers that give you much of the cardio benefit of running without impact. Stair mills may work for you, too. Oh, I'll turn you into a gym rat in no time ;)

Judy-- nurse the cold out. One missed WO won't matter and Mist needs a healthy mommy :cloud9: Congrats on the Forerunner. You're gonna love it

Can someone explain this DVC stuff? I've never looked into it and don't know how the points work. I'd love to know what you guys are talking about!

Sunny

Colleen - I second Lynne and Cam. Go with someone with lots of posts, get a contract and ask for references.

Sunny - There are some FAQ on teh DVC Board that will help. I can also pm you some other good info if you want.

FYI - Chimera's a DVCer and I think Lily's a member too.

Basically, you buy points. For example, I have 150, the minimum through DVC, but you can get smaller with resale. Each night at each DVC resort has a point value assigned to it depending on the season, the night of teh week (Friday and Sat have higher points), and the size of the room (studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, grand villa). Just to give you a very basic example, the week from teh Friday before Marathon to the Friday after is 85 points for a studio at SSR. This is a queen bed, sleeper sofa and kitchenette. 1 BR's and higher have full kitchens and a whirlpool tub in the master bath.

Each year, your points get refurbished (in my case, I get 150 points every August). You can bank your points for a year or borrow from the next year too. There are many ins and outs, but that gives you the very basic jist of things.

Another happy DVCer here! We bought a resale contract at BWV. Resale may be a better option if you want a specific resort. SSR is your best bet if you want brand new (and it is a lovely resort) plus the extra years. I think it is a great deal. We have 210 points which allows us to visit WDW twice. Usually for one long stay (7 days or longer in a 1 BR) and a shorter stay (4 or 5 days in a Studio). We LOVE it  .

As for renting points...I agree with the others that say to check references and go with someone who has been around here for a while. It's still a big purchase and you don't want to get burned! With that said, it is a GREAT option and really a great way to get a feel for DVC!

I ran today for 25 minutes. I paced at exactly 23 minutes again for 2 miles. My first mile was 11 minutes...but that LONG up hill at the beginning of mile 2 really knocks me out of whack! I did try the run walk and it didn't impact my time much at all. I ran for my first mile at 11 minutes then walked 60 seconds, then ran 10 minutes longer, then walked 60 seconds then ran to finish my 2 miles and continued running for 2 more minutes. I felt pretty good on my 3rd uphill which I think was due to the walking breaks! :thumbsup2 All things considered it was a good run....even though I'm fighting off a cold, have a really sore butt from xt yesterday and I dressed way too warm. It was actually really nice out today...35 degrees and sunny. BUT I dressed for my typical morning run which is usually in the teens. I got a bit too warm towards the end and even took off my gloves!!! :sunny:

Another happy DVC-er here. Like many, I wish I had bought in sooner, too.
I bought the minimum 150 points thru Disney in Aug. 05. Used points to stay while down for the marathon (but paid cash for the weekend nights).
Am also planning to use points to go to DL for the 1/2.

Loved the 1BR. Having the whirpool tub and the washer/dryer in the unit was great!

Yes. That was a HUGE deal for us. It was nice to soak in the hot tub after the 1/2 and it was REALLY nice to wash our dirty duds as soon as we got back.

BTW, Sunny, Carrie's explanation is wonderful. Another way to look at it is as I tell people: This is Disney's version of a timeshare. But, rather than purchasing a particular week each year and having to trade it if you want to go at a different time, you buy an allotment of points. The points are your "budget" and you get them each year (ours are renewed each February). You can stay anywhere you want and anytime you want, and the cost is determined by the size and location of the accomodations as well as the time of year. There is a charge for accommodations per night with Friday and Saturday nights being more "costly" points-wise.

Just to show you how wonderful DVC is: We purchased our points in June 2002 and wanted to use the ones that had accrued in February 2002, so we went to DVC Hilton Head at Thanksgiving. We loved it there so much that within 4 hours of arriving, we tried to do an add-on at Hilton Head, but the resort was sold out for February points. Instead, we bought an additional 100 points at BCV with the expectation of using them at HH each year. We have spent every Thanksgiving at HH DVC since 2002 and one Christmas week and one overnight on our way back from Florida two Easters ago. Recently, friends of ours were selling one of their HH contracts for February points and we did a re-sale contract with them. So, now we have points at BCV for our WDW vacations (read: marathon weekends) and we have points at HH for our Thanksgiving trips.

The important thing to remember is that you can make a reservation at your "home resort" 11 months in advance but at a non-home resort 7 months in advance. That is one of the reasons people say to be sure to buy where you want to stay so that you can make the reservation 11 months before (even if you don't think you will) before everyone else books there. Right now, I think Disney is only selling Saratoga Springs. So, if you want points at one of the other resorts, you will have to look for a resale.

See Cam. See Cam go :offtopic: again!

Dave - GO :thumbsup2 Especially if it is accessible and free :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Judy - What a sweet hubbie!!

Did the normal mt. bike tues. w/ husband trail. i rode pretty fast today. I'm the worst mt. biker but i think i'm getting better, which might make me the next to worst mt. biker!! I ran 3.75 miles of gravel and hills. I have one more LR of 8 then Marathon next weekend. I'm trying to figure out what to do. I'm going w/ ec to run w/ her former exchange student. they are planning a 9:30 pace for the 1st half and then eval faster or slower from there. I KNOW i can't keep that pace. I would like to improve on my disney time (5:05, but that was goofy), but I'm not sure if i should really go for it to see what i'm made of, or just run at a reasonable pace and have a quicker recovery. the marathon is on the 25, and we have another one 4 weeks after that. I am using then as training runs for the 50miler in april. I really want you guys to give me permission to take it easy, still try to beat my time, but be reasonable and comfortable. I just feel embarrased that they are going to be waiting on me for probably around 45 minutes :guilty: Any advice??

MelR-- Here's my take. You and I had very different experiences on 1/8. You ran the half the day before, took it easy and ran negative splits, feeling great! I bolted out too fast, continued to push when I realized I was going to fast and was pretty much miserable by mile 22. Considering you are doing back to back marathons to train for an ulta, I really think you should take it easy. Maybe shoot for 4:30 to beat your 1/8 time. You have always been incredibly successful with a laid back approch. Don't abandon what works now! EC will not mind waiting around munching on the food while you run a good race at a good pace for you. She's too good of a friend!

Refresh my memory, didn't you say you'd never run a marathon some time ago???? ;) :rotfl2:

You're going to do great. :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Wow, this DVC stuff is interesting and confusing. If you buy a certain number of points, how do they hold up in value over the years? How do you know what buys you a week this year will still buy you a week 5 years from now? Or do you?

Sunny

OK, you totally caught me!!! I was actually talking about this w/ ec yesterday. I didn't run a marathon at disney, I ran goofy. I'm calling hogeye and cowtown "training runs" :teeth: Whad'ya think?? I think I've also got some animal name race thing going on??? :rotfl: Oh, and 4:30 is totally out of reach!!! It would kick booty, but I'm pretty sure that is out of the question!

The points HAVE to stay the same, sort of. The number of points required per year per resort cannot change. For example, they could make one season or day of week more, but then they would have to make another one less. The only thing that really changes is the seasons an dthat's typically just a when Thanksgiving adn Easter fall at a different time, they change those dats, but then other dates beconme a lesser season. That's a guarantee deeded in.

I also for got to say that the contracts run to 2054 for SSR and 2042 for all others. In addition, sort of on that same line, the prices for all resorts continue to go up, both resale and through Disney. So not only can the value that you get when ussing the points not change, if you need to sell, provided the same trends continue, you shouldn't take a big loss like other times share owners do.

Finally, you can get put on a waiting list to get other resorts, besides SSR, from Disney, but they do not like to do that and you have to tell your guide (aka sales person), you will not buy unless you can get a certain resort. Period.

OK, back to marathon. Yikes. MelR - Holy cow!!! You make me tired. I woudl tell anyone else they wer nuts, but I know you go above and beyond with your training. I would not push too hard, though.
