Wk of Feb 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Oh wow! Too many posts to keep up with!

Thanks to those who shared their experiences. It really helps me to stay motivated while I am in the beginning stages of this running journey.

Dave - I feel your pain! Well actually mine is behind my knee. I am sure that I am not stretching well enough. So, yoga is now officially my cross training activity. Good thing for me I really enjoy it. Take it easy, rest etc..

Well all this talk about which race to do in the last week gets exciting. Good thing I am reading MFM or I would be crazy and sign up for the Goofy! :rotfl2: I would think of doing the Disney full, but I just can't commit to the long runs on the weekends. Maybe when my kids are older....

I am committed to take it slow. After all, I plan on making this a way of life! :cool1: I am going to run/walk my first 5k in March. The end of March training for the Chicago distance classic begins. I planning on doing the walk/run due to a few aches and pains I have felt so far during the training for the 5k. Then, my body should be ready to run/walk the Disney half.

So those of you taking it slow can hang out with me! I will be the one wearing lime green in the back of the group. At least I won't have to worry how my butt looks in running pants. :rotfl2:

Question - Isn't Valentine's Day chocolate calorie free?

Oh, and 4:30 is totally out of reach!!! It would kick booty, but I'm pretty sure that is out of the question!

I don't know what I was thinking! First I say take it easy, then I say shave 35 minutes off of your 1/8 time :rotfl2: I think what I was trying to say was aim for sub5. I don't know where my head is at

Carrie-- I looked at DVC 101 and it explained alot. I'm not ready or able to commit to that kind of vacation expenditure right now. I'll probably spend that and more over the years... oh well! My circa 1950's house which has had no major updates since its birth might feel a bit slighted :rotfl2:

Actually, at times I look at my house which is in terrible need of a major overall and think, "hmm, WDW '03 could have bought that kitchen floor, WDW '04x2 could have done the bathroom...." But what fun is that? How many photo ops does a kitchen floor yield anyway. But I'm sure my friends and family are starting to plan an intervention... Their probably researching Disney 12 step programs as we speak.

Don't worry I won't let them get to me.

Oh work has me in a tizzy. Can you tell  :lmao:
Speaking of work, they are offering a "GPS technology and Applications" course. I should sign up so I can ask all my questions about Garmin :rotfl2: I don't think they'd appreciate that.

Did I miss a butt conversation? Oh I'm always ready to talk about butts :lmao:
Maggie-- in case you haven't caught our second motto, its BBBoH. That stands for Big Butts Beacon of Hope. We're the ones out there showing the world that you don't have to be a rail thin runner to enjoy and benefit from this "free sport".

I know I missed a convo about running alone earlier. I do 98% of my training alone. I don't mind at all. I also do most of my racing alone since my local running friends only do 5Ks. I had no thoughts at all about showing up for the full alone. But I have to say, I can't put into words how great it was to see a lime green scarf on the walk to the corrals (Linda, Crazy4Pooh and DH). And then meeting up with Bree and her DFIL in corral B was beyond comforting. Christa met up with us a bit later. I never dreamed it would mean so much to me to be with these guys. :grouphug: So, '07 make sure you wear your scarfs!!!!!!!! Meet up, even if you don't actually run with anyone. Its such a great feeling to know you're not alone.

Speaking of scarfs. I don't even know who supplied them? Thank you! Was it Lily or Lisa? Please do tell you I can thank you properly.

I think I'll go home now. I've done about as much damage at my desk as is fit for one day. :rolleyes2

Hi WISH Team!

I can't keep up! I figure I best get in now whilst I can. I'll read it ALL later.

Sunny, yeah, I provided the scarfs this year. We had someone do it for us last year and they were spectacular. (Way better than those I provided really) I found fleece last minute and only a bit, but it was put to good use. DH cut all the strips the dear that he really is.

I can say that I trained mostly by myself. I ran on weekends with a group who motivated me, but my pace was between everyone so often I was out there alone. However there was someone always waiting for me to ge back. This was nice. The year Before I did everything by myself. (My DBrother went on a couple of excursions two years ago. Not last year however. This year I too Liz a couple of outings. (She would call me and I'd chat up for some of my distances.) At the race itself 1/2 I played with DS, and the Full I just plugged away on my own. I didn't mind. It was ok to chat with those "whizzing" by and I did that some. Mostly I was so petrified at the full that I just soaked in what I can and plodded along.

DVC here too and we use it a LOT! Borrowed forward we are.

I did 40 minutes TM today. Nice and easy, covered 2.5 miles. Back I go to read some more of all that I have missed here.

Hey, guys, guess what?!?!?!?!??!?!?!? I did it! I did the equivalent of a 5K on the TM in all w3/r2 intervals. Well, more like c3/j2 intervals (that would be crawl 3/jog 2). The interval speeds I set up were 4.2 for 3 and 5.0 for 2 and I did the entire time. 41:15 total time for a 13:18 pace. Now, I know that pace doesn't sound great, but I sustained it for 3.1 miles! Happy Dance!

Now, someone, PLEASE tell me it gets easier!!! I cannot believe I jogged a total of 16 minutes!!!

Way to go Cam!!! :thumbsup2 That is great! As far as getting easier, I am wondering that myself! :) I sure hope so.

Sunny - No worries, you didn't miss any butt conversations. That was just a one of the random thoughts I've had on the TM while training. Since I also spend most of the time training alone, I need to entertain myself somehow! :rotfl2:

Lily - Thanks for saying WISh team! I guess us newbies are now part of a team! Cool! :cool1:

Have a great night!
Maggie

FYI: To all you DVC owners - I own a time share in Princeville, Kauai, HI. Unfortunately, due to airfare costs for a family of five we don't go every year. So, if anyone is looking for a future trade just let me know!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

On DVC, wish we'd bought sooner, but right after 9/11, AP/FL resident rates at WDW were pretty fabulous. We could get one of the moderates for $89/night. Now we have 250 points at SSR. That gets us anywhere from 10 to 14 nights per year, depending on when and how we spend them. Our biggest 'problem' is that we usually go on weekends, which 'cost' double points. We bought our contract directly from Disney because I wanted the sure thing. With resales, Disney retains right-of-first refusal to buy a resale and I didn't want to get all excited about a contract then lose it. But if we do any add-ons, I would certainly look at a resale first before going back to Disney. I really want some points at VWL some day.

Judy...congrats on your new baby! We'll want pictures! No, I can't take the credit for starting the WISH team. It was started for the 2005 races...I think karebear was involved. I just picked up the torch last year and carried it on!

Cam...congrats...what a pace! :cheer2: It does get easier. It took me months to settle into the W3/R2 pace.

Sunny...love the BBBoH motto! :thumbsup2

I did a little over a mile yesterday on the TM at R3/W2. We had some serious frost this morning...been really cold the last 2 days, but should be back up near 80 by this weekend. Florida weather is weird

Cam - Great job on the TM. Congrats!

Lily - just in case I forgot to tell ya - THANKS! for the scarf. I wore it all the way in the 1/2. Even have it in some of my pics.

Terri

Cam - That was a great pace!!! Congrats on all the jogging. I don't know about the getting easier. I go out a do a long run 15+, and I still feel like i'm going to die b/4 I finish 3. I was really crawling by the end of the 3.75 today!! I think some days we're just on and others we're off. As a general rule, i'm off  (hehe)

I'm gonna try running 4 miles tonight. WISH me luck! :cheer2: Does anyone else find themselves randomly thinking about other WISHers during the day? Gosh, I can't wait to meet you all in January!

Judy- Congrats on your new baby! Yay! Give Mist a big, warm hug for my dd. She LOVES horses. Well, "hosses" to her (she's almost 2). Enjoy the Garmin. What a great husband, but I'm more proud of you for wanting that instead of candy. Another unhealthy holiday successfully avoided! Good job! :thumbsup2 And be sure to take a good rest. I ran through my cold last week and totally regret it. It has lasted soooooo freakin' long. Grrrr! :furious: Probably would have been over in a couple of days if I'd taken it easy. :wizard: to feel better!

Maggie- Thanks for reinforcing our need to take this training slow. I was starting to feel like I should be training a lot harder. I'll be right there with you during the half. Plodding along and loving every minute of it! We've got to remember the important part is getting to the starting line INJURY FREE! So please help me remember to do this the right way, not the impatient way.

Cam- OMG! :cool1: :thumbsup2 :yay: You just did your first 5k (don't you wish you could have gotten a tshirt)! I cried like a baby when I finished my first. My dh didn't know what to do with me. I cried all the way home. You would have thought it was a real race and not a training run. But there is such freedom and a great sense of accomplishment. Now get yourself into a race and make it official. Don't worry or be nervous about being last. You definitely won't be and if so who cares? You'll beat everyone who didn't have the courage to enter! I was last in my first one in December and was just glad that I could make someone else feel better by them not being last! And goodness your pace wasn't slow at all. Last weekend I ran 3/walked 2 at 41:06 and was totally proud of myself so you're doing great!!!

Here's my questions for today. Gosh seems like I'm full of them! :confused3

1. Someone mentioned on here that there was a resort right near the start of the 1/2 like within walking distance. I would LOVE to be that close on race morning. My tummy does crazy things when I get nervous so skipping the hassle of the traffic and having a real bathroom right up until last minute would be great. Which resort is this?!?! Any specific location that would be best to request?

2. Reasking the stretching dvd question in case someone overlooked it. I need a good post-running stretching dvd. Any suggestions? Or heck a book with pictures? I'm clueless about stretching and don't wanna be yanking things in the wrong directions! :lmao:

Happy exercising & healthy eating,

DENA

Good morning everyone - I hope everyone had a great Valentine's Day :goodvibes . I came home last night to a Chicken Marsala Dinner and a glass of wine :cloud9: It was actually a Weight Watchers' recipe :thumbsup2 .

A couple of hours later my DH and I went to the fitness center to work out. Here is my workout:
Treadmill - (2.02 miles) @4.0 for 30 minutes.....Trying to follow the plan in the Non-Marathon guide
Lat pulldown - 35 pounds, 10 reps, 3 sets
Bicep curl - 25 pounds, 10 reps, 3 sets
Push-ups (using the stability ball) 10 reps, 3 sets
Sit-ups (using the stability ball) 10 reps, 2 sets

I could have done more but it was getting super late and I had to get up in the morning.

I will try and read through posts at some point today - most likely once I get home - I have to do laundry  .

Have a great day everyone!

Jodi

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

I took the past 2 days as rest days to try to allow my shin splints to recover, but I did do some stretching at home and I was also doing some toe lifts to try to strengthen those muscles too. Thank you MelR and Sunny for giving me a nudge to go to the other gym on campus. I did go to the undergraduate fitness center, checked it out, and joined (have to pay a little but not too much). So now I can go there for some pool running, and they also have an indoor track so I can run around in circles like Craig.

OK, the other thing I found out yesterday was I got the score of my grant that was reviewed last week. Thank you everyone for all the pixie dust you've been sending out about it. So my grant was not triaged, it was discussed and scored. I received a score of 159. A perfect score is 100 and the worse score is 500 - so I'm really happy with that score. Now the down side is my score of 159 is a 19 percentile. Which means if there were 100 grants mine was #19. Again, I'd rather be #19 than #50 or 100, but in this day and age (i.e., funding environment) NIH will probably only be able to fund to the 15th percentile. So I'll most likely just miss the funding cutoff. I just need to sit and wait for them to dole out the money and see if they make it down to my grant.

Thanks again for the good wishes though.

Maggie - sorry to hear about your knees. Sounds like you and I are in the same boat dealing with the aches and pains of starting something new. Let's help each other through it OK? This is where I get frustrated and have stopped before. Come on, together we can make it through this early part. Hang in there! :thumbsup2

Cam - Whoo hooo! :cool1: WTG on your TM 5K! You were smokin!!!

Judy - Congrats on Misty! Keep us posted on how your new baby is adjusting.

Dena - how did your 4 miler go last night? Great job on your 5k last weekend. Where was it?

OK, I'm going to try to do another walk today and will take it a little easier than I have been. I want to go easy on my legs and strengthen those shin muscles.

All this DVC talk is making me jealous!! We almost purchased when we were on the cruise in '01. I really wished we would have. Then it would already be in the budget. DH is not going to let me keep hanging out with you guys if I keep spending tons of money ;)

I finally got to ride my bike yesterday :cool1: It felt great. I only had time to do 4.5 miles but that's o.k. Went to a local bike trail so it was pretty flat. Hoping to get out again this afternoon & go further. Also swam in the a.m. but had major headache so I only got in 450 yds there. But I can swim 100 continuous now :cheer2: That's a big improvement for me.

Dave-so now you get to hurry up & wait some more, but that's great on your scoring. Your doing great training too, keep it up :thumbsup2

Jodi-you are rocking  No doubt you will be ready come next Jan.

Lilo-I do, and I mention things in conversation to DH like "so & so did this" and he looks at me like "who???"

Cam-that is awesome!!!! :cool1: :cool1: You will be running the full next year :teeth:

Krista-I'm not sure where we are staying yet. We usually just go up for the day when we go because we are only 1 1/2 hrs away, but I know we will need to spend the night so we dont have to get up soooo early to get there in time. I like the Franklin/Brentwood area. Great shopping, safe area, great restaurants. That's what I love about Nashville, shopping & food

I forgot to tell you what my sweet DH got me for Valentines. A bunch of repair accessories I needed for my bike: replacement tube, tool thingie, CO2 cartridge & thing to use it with, glueless patch. I have yet to learn how to use any of it but I thought it was so sweet of him because I did still need all of that.

Oh, he also had the boys each give me a box of chocolate. So I not only have 1 , I have 2 boxes of chocolate. CHOCOLATE IS EVIL pirate:

Hey all...crazy week! DD8 bday was Vday so haven't gotten to read and post! And mine was Sunday! :rolleyes2
I GOT MY BIKE!!!!! DH organized a B-day party for me Friday and I got enough $$ for the TREK 1000....I did not upgrade, we just dont have the $$ to spend over $1000 on a bike now...maybe someday.
Have to go. Work, and everything else, is KILLING me this week!

I GOT MY BIKE!!!!!
Christa - :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:    and happy belated b'day

Rest day for me (boy is sick, still or again, i don't know, so no bible study today, just mocha and pharmacy) Can you guys entertain me today??

Happy Wednesday Morning everyone :sunny: .

Dave: Congrats on the score for your grant. Hopefully that is putting you one step closer!!! We'll keep sending that pixie dust :wizard: .

Christa: Happy b'day and congrats on the new bike :thumbsup2 .

Tiff: I love hearing how everyone's valentine's gifts are helping their training and fitness goals :goodvibes . Well maybe not the chocolate LOL....but we all need a little chocolate now and then.

Jodi: Sounds like a GREAT night!!! I love that you guys work out together. That is very cool!!! What a great healthy way to spend Valentine's!!

Dena and Maggie: I need to be reminded that this is a slow process myself. I already want to improve my pace, etc, etc. But I really need to focus on slowly increasing my miles. NO INJURIES!! Thanks for the reminder (((HUGS))). As for stretching....I'm with you?! I tend to breeze over it once my run is over. I know that is BAD, but I am so impatient. I'm waiting to hear what everyone else does and for how long is my big question? Also, sounds like you are doing great!! My first 5K is in April....I can't wait! :cool1:

I woke up SORE SORE SORE. And I'm working through this cold, but I've just got to get my workouts in. See, we're leaving for a ski trip tomorrow night and I don't think I'll get to run :sad2: since we'll be up in the mountains which just got loads of snow. I'm going to bring my stuff....but there is no fitness center on site. THEY DO have an indoor pool....so I figure my XT for Friday can be swimming laps in the pool. :woohoo: Probably good for my legs since they are SOOO sore today. And I guess skiing for 3 days counts as exercise LOL. At least a little bit!

So can anybody tell me how bad it is to miss a run? I'm still sooo early in my training, but I'm getting ready for an April 5K. I'm only up to 2 miles right now and am hitting it in about 23 minutes. I'm supposed to bump up to 2.5 miles next week...but with only 3 runs in this week I'm wondering if I should stick with 2 again?! :confused3

'kay....gotta go and get tortured at my class now. I'm totally NOT motivated. Wish it was a run day instead. This class KILLS me.

Cam - Woo hooo! That is awesome!!!! Yes, it does get easier. I agree with MelR, though, teh first 2 to 3 miles are always the hardest for me. Makes not sense, but it's the way it is. DH laughs that it takes me 40 to 60 minutes to "warm up."

Sunny - I have 32 pages in a scrapbook saying tah tkitchen floors really do have photo ops. Actually, it's the entryway, living room floor, and 2 bathroom floors, but you get my point. ;) Noweher near as fun as WDW, though. One of the biggest drawbacks of DVC is the cash outlay up front. It will pay of fin teh long run, but will not provide your home improvements.

Christa, :bday: party: I hope you had a good one.

I did 6 miles yesterday on the treadmill. Talk about dragging it. It took me forever to finish.

Colleen
