Wine and Dine 2015

Yeah the magic mile confuses me as well. Guess I'll just stick with a standard 4 mile run. Thank you!

My plan for this weekend is to do 2 miles at a normal long run pace, do the third mile as fast as I can (not a sprint, a pace that is still sustainable for a mile) and then do the 4th mile as a cool down.

I don't really do the magic mile, at least not the way Galloway describes it. Since I run my short runs straight through, I use one run a week as sort of a tempo run where try to keep up a "moderately hard" effort and run negative splits. I take my fastest mile from that and use it as my "magic mile" number. Typically, that's either mile 2 or 3 because mile 1 is warm-up and mile 4 has two sizeable uphills that slow me down that late in the run.

I always feel like I want to die and I'm never going to finish the run in mile 2 of any length run. :)

Here, here! Mile 2 is always the worst for me. Once I actually get to mile 3+ I've usually settled into everything.

This is my first mile to mile and a half! Usually right around mile 2-3 I stop feeling like '***, what was I thinking trying this running thing???' lol

Now, if I could get better with my pacing and fueling on a run, I'd be set. I'm just crossing past 10k distance in my long runs and I hit the wall last time MUCH earlier than usual. And it was kind of out of the blue too. But, I have 3 more months to get it all straight, thankfully!

To the Newton shoe wearers:
I just received my order from Running Warehouse. I have a pair of Newton Aha's that I'm trying to figure out if they are too large and should be returned. Typically, I wear a 10 in my run around sneakers/shoes, a 10.5 in some of the running shoes that run small (ie NB 890) and these are an 11. My question is, where on your foot should the lugs fall? Mine stop just at the ball of the foot before the little sulcus under your toes begins. It feels okay jogging around the house, but these things feel like boats on my feet. I just don't know if that's typical of the shoe, or I'm feeling it because they are too big.
By the 'old school' (or maybe it's still current?) rules of shoe fit, I do technically have a thumbs width (laying flat ie, palm part of thumb down) of space between my second toe- my longest- and the end of the shoe. But man, this feels like sitting in the drivers seat of gramps' Town Car when you've been used to driving a Corvette- I feel like I have extra shoe for days.
Just wondering if others could chime in on how their Newton's fit and where their lugs fall on the plantar aspect of their feet.

Thanks guys!!

I always feel ok-ish during the first mile. :) Usually not super great, since I'm still getting loosened up and working stiffness out, but at least have that start of the run energy going. :)

I don't have a Newton specific answer, but I also did the full thumb width on the Asics Nimbus that I got right before Tink, since that was what I'd always read/been told. For me, I did not like having that much empty shoe at all. Like you said, it felt like you are in gramps' Town Car. :) I felt like I was running in squishy clown shoes between the length issue and how soft the cushioning was. I only ended up doing maybe 5-6 runs total in those shoes... my last long run before Tink, 2-3 of the 30 min runs, a 5K race, and Tink itself.

I have more like a half thumb in my Altras, not really by choice. I have about the same size foot as you, normally about 10.5. I'd read I should size up a full size on the Altras, but they don't make an 11.5 (the only half size they don't make in women's), so I guess I lucked out in not needing a full size up. I wear thinner socks and so far so good up through 10K. I like the snugger feeling.

I'm curious...how smoothly do the Expos/packet pick-up run for runDisney events?

Our experience is pretty good ... there are lines (Disney likes their lines), but it moves nicely. Considering the # of people, I think they do well. Which is to say I've seen much worse at smaller events.

Good job! I love getting my workout out of the way in the morning. :)

I am looking forward to resting tomorrow. :) This coming week is a big week on my plan. I'm supposed to do 8 this Saturday, and then no step back next week... it's supposed to be 7! I am doing a 10K race next Thursday though so I don't think I'm going to quite make it to all that mileage. I think I will do 6.5 this Saturday due to the race, then the 10K on Thursday, then maybe like 3-4 next Saturday.

Ugh! I woke up with pain on the top of my right foot, the tendon/muscle that runs between my big and second toe up to my ankle. I have never had pain in this spot before. It hurts when I flex my foot by taking a step. No pain when I am just sitting still. I did not even know I could pull a muscle there! I am thinking of skipping my 30 minute run tonight so I don't sabotage my 6.5 mile Saturday run.

For me it's miles 4-6, of ANY run! Doesn't matter if my run's 5 miles or 13 miles: 4-6 are the worst and when I most feel like I want to quit. I've been hitting distances of 10-13 miles for years now and it never changes: 4-6 are the pits, lol! Once I'm past about 6 miles, it's what I think of as the Golden Miles - that's when I seem to hit a state of comfortable flow.

Newtons absolutely DO take some getting used to, so it could be that. My shoes definitely fit well and the lugs in my Gravity's and Fates fall directly underneath the ball of my foot. But other models I've tried are slightly differently positioned: the Motion lugs fall a little further back, compared to the Gravity's, and the Distance's lugs fall slightly more forward. They're all the same size and all fit the same all around, so I really think the lugs' placement depends on the model and what its specific use is. For instance, the Distance is meant to be more of a speed shoe and for sure, the more forward lugs help keep me forward and on my toes for faster runs; they're not comfortable for easy, slow slogs. The Gravity lugs fall in a place that seems to work better at longer distances.

A thumbs' width is what I've got at the top of my shoes, too. And yep, the toe box is pretty wide on purpose: the more your foot/toes can splay on impact, the better they control lateral movement and provide power. That said, you shouldn't feel like the shoe is loose all around and floppy. And my Newtons are all the same size I wear in most other brands, so going up a full size sounds like it could be too much. All this rambling to say I think it's worth trying a half size smaller to compare, lol!

I'm curious...how smoothly do the Expos/packet pick-up run for runDisney events?
It mostly depends on the event and what you want from it. A lot of folks park at the entrance long before opening to score special official merchandise and I hear that can get a little snarly. All I ever want is my bib and swag, and maybe a quick browse of the vendors, so I usually go later in the day and it's very, very smooth.

Google extensor tendonitis - sound like what you're experiencing?

I did and that is exactly what it is! I do tend to tie my right shoelace too tight. Thanks so much! Off to ice and re-lace my shoes.
I had a feeling - been there, done that! Still battling it, but it's getting better.
