Wine and Dine 2015

I'm not either!!

I just started reading your PTR on the races. You're a WDW virgin and I'm a DLR virgin! I feel like a fish out of water planning for the Tink, but the W/D and the Princess? I'm in my element. The W/D will be my first RD race and first half, but I know WDW like I know the back of my hand at this point. Tink makes me afraid because everything will be new. First flight to LA. First trip to CA. First trip to DLR. You get the idea.

Anyway, I'm praying that I'll be ready in 3 more months, but it seems like it'll be tomorrow before we know it. I'm up to 6-6.5 miles for a long run, so not too far off, but definitely couldn't run a half tomorrow.

Cannot believe it's only 3 months away! That time is going to go so fast, and I'm definitely not ready yet either. But I'm excited seeing things like the Disneyland Half waivers and corrals being posted, because that means our race is the next one! I know those things are still a couple months away for us though. But hopefully the medals will be revealed soon (definitely hoping for during DLH weekend, if not sooner). I can't wait to see it.

On another note, as of now, the trip for this race will be a short weekend trip for me, my two sisters, and my dad. My younger sister is doing the race as well - she's also signed up for DLH with a couple friends, so they're going for C2C. I'm jealous of that. Anyway, we've started talking about some things we want to try to do, and my Dad brought up possibly going to the first Christmas party. I really hope we can make that happen, because I love the Christmas party. After I started my new job almost 2 years ago, I thought it wouldn't be possible to do again any time soon, being on a school schedule and all. But it will be awesome if we do.

We made our first trip to DL in 2013. And had some of the same fears. Now we love it almost more than WDW.
If it helps. Think about DLR like this. Everything is much more compact.
Picture the map of Epcot. Now in that same footprint, you have Disneyland AND Disney's California Adventure.
Now think of EVERY ride and Attraction at WDW (MK, EP, AK, and DHS). All of them. That same number of rides and attractions all fit in the same footprint as Epcot.
If you are staying at almost any hotel anywhere around DLR, you wake up, leave your hotel room. You do not head to a bus or your car. You simply walk a very short distance to the front gates of both parks. If you're staying at DLH, PP, or GC, you walk through Downtown Disney to get to the front gate.
Nothing to be afraid of.

Good point.

I was a little hesitant having to pick a hotel. Because I'm DVC, this is something I never have to worry about (at least not to the same depth) at WDW. It's merely a matter of 'do I want to stay at home (BLT), have the great pool (BCV), be close to DTD (SSR), or something else' and then book. DLR, getting into the GCV is very very hard. Nearly impossible to get a studio around a race weekend at 7 months out. So I had to find a hotel that wouldn't break the bank but was still close and still had decent amenities. I ended up picking a new (I think it opens in October) Holiday Inn Express over on S Manchester.

Everyone says they love how compact DLR is compared to WDW. I never minded that WDW was spread out, I rather loved the fact that you were immersed in this whole other world. But I'm really looking forward to that first trip to DLR. And considering I have an upcoming trip to HKG and Tokyo next month, and have done BOS-LHR, I'm sure the flight to LAX or SNA won't be nearly as bad.

I absolutely love DLR and CA! I spent most of my life in Cali and just in the past 5 years moved farther east (AR). So going to WDW for the first time back in Feb, it was shocking just how big and spread out WDW is! I love both for different reasons, lol. I love just walking to both parks in Cali. We last stayed at the Grand Californian and THAT was awesome! You have your own entrance right into DCA! And you can walk right out the hotel doors and be in Downtown Disney is 1 minute. And park hopping is so easy! I feel like I got to do much more, since everything is so compact, if that makes sense. But I loved the whole WDW experience. It is so huge, you are immersed in all things Disney wherever you go. I have never run in either, so I have no opinion on that, but I think I will like WDW better, as you are on Disney property the whole time, not on the streets of Anaheim as I have heard the DL races are. But I still plan on doing races in both. :)

Well, I did my Saturday 5 mile training run outside! It was the first time I had run outside since I hurt my Achilles back in April. I have been using the treadmill since my recovery. I woke up around 7 and took my dog out and thought, "wow, it actually feels cool out here! I should run outside today!". So I went in, changed and got some water and set out. It was 76* when I started. I had a 1/4 mile stretch through a stand of pine trees measured so I stuck to that path. Just ran back and forth 20 times, lol! I know that sounds terrible but after the boring treadmill it was great! I put my water bottle at one end and tried to drink a lot. I averaged a 15:10 mile. I had 2 miles that were under 15:00, one that was exactly 15:00 and two that were like :30 over. But on one I was messing with my phone to try and play some music and on the other my DH called to see if I was ok, lol. I woke him up to tell him I was going out and he got up and I was still gone so he got worried, lol. I walked for about 5 minutes to cool off before I went back inside and OMG it was so nice walking into the house! I checked the temp and it was 99* with 75% humidity when I finished! I went back outside to do something and though, OMG I was running in THIS?? :)

Does the Wine and Dine have pace runners that you can keep up with? If so, are these at every minute or pace, 30 seconds, or something else?

I am doing the time improvement plan. I am supposed to run 800 m so many times, every other week. The instruction is to then walk 3 minutes.

Am I supposed to walk 3 minutes after each 800 m or walk 3 minutes after all the 800 m? When I did the two miles, (800m x 4) I walked after each 800m. But, we build up distance, so I was wondering if I did it right. I am doing 6 x 800m Saturday, so was looking for clarification.

TIA.

I read that as walking for 3 minutes in between each interval.

So run 800m, walk for 3 minutes to recover afterward
Then run your next 800m, walk for 3 minutes...etc. until you have done all of your interval repeats.

Yep, that's definitely it. The idea is that you're doing the 800m faster than you would do it if you ran all of it at once, i.e. just running 2 miles. So you need the several minutes of recovery in between to be able to rest and continue at that faster pace. Now, the rest period could vary. Instead of doing the rest period based on time, I do it based on distance as well since I do speed work at the track. So I'll do 800m and then walk 200m (half of a lap) and start the next 800m when I get to the halfway mark on the track.

That is SO like what happened to me on Sunday. Course I fiddle farted around because I didn't 'feel' like running (and mentally it turned out to be a tough run) and so when I was done, it was like 85 (90? not sure) with a decent bit of humidity and noon day sun pouring down. Lesson learned, if I don't 'feel' like rolling out of bed to run, and end up running later- make it after about 3pm. lol.

I went into the garden later that day around 3 and was like "Jesus, it's roasting out here"

I read that as walking for 3 minutes in between each interval.

Holy 5$%96! No wonder people say they hate speed work. I'm tired just reading about that. lol

I don't even know that I could run for the full 800m at my top speed. I'm a fairly decent sprinter. Not going to win medals or nothing, but I can sprint a heck of a lot faster than I can endurance run.

Is there a certain pace that you're aiming to run the 800m as you train? Or is it just flat out as fast as you can go? Do these actually have some effect on your overall running speed? Can you do something like this to help build endurance? Say if I want to start going from r/w intervals to running a longer period (now I'm 3:1, say I wanted to transition up to 6:1 or 10:1 or something?) is this the training technique I'd use??

"Speedwork:
800 meter repeats are included to
improve speed. Do the standard warmup, followed by
4 accelerations that gradually increase to workout
pace. Run each 800 meter segment 15 seconds faster
than your goal pace for half a mile
,
and walk for 3
minutes. Then repeat as noted on the schedule. " from Disney Galloway Training Program instructions.

This has to be a typo. 800 meters = 0.49709 mile. You can't run 15 seconds faster in the 800 m than you best half mile run. There is a better description on the Galloway website:
http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/half-marathon-training/

Run 15-30 seconds per mile faster than 1/2 marathon pace would make more sense.

We have two "systems" that we are trying to improve. We want to run faster at our lactate threshold, and we want to improve our VO2 max. I would run my 800's at or around my Lactate Threshold. It's likely to be around your 10k pace. You don't need to kill yourself on these things. You want to complete all the 800's at near the same pace. If you find that you slow down drastically on the last few 800's you know your pace is too fast.

McMillan Running has a good calculator:
https://www.mcmillanrunning.com/

This calculator results page gives a pretty good estimate of your LT and VO2 max. Of course for the real thing you need to have a treadmill test where your blood is drawn at various points.

After you get your paces there is a link to "Training Paces." I run my 800's at McMillan "Tempo Interval" pace. The video link gives a good description.

The Speed Pace is done at VO2 max pace. I would limit VO2max workouts. They can really take it out of you and lead to burnout and injury. The magic mile is a VO2 max workout, although limited in volume.

I have kind of a random silly question about the Run Disney expos. When you go, do you have to go pick up your bib and packet first, or can you check out the merchandise? I'm hoping I'll be able to get to the Wine and Dine expo on Friday, the biggest reason being that I want a chance to get some of the event specific merchandise (i.e. a shirt, sweatshirt, or mug - stuff like that) that can sell fast. Can I head to that area first and then go get my packet? I'm not concerned about that part and know it will be there whenever I get over there.

Yes you can go get your merchandise first.
Yep, you will have to wait in line twice to get into the Jostens Center. The shirt and bag is usually retrieved at the second building, the Jostens Center. You can't get your shirt and bag without your bib from the HP Field House.

Compression sock poll: Do you wear them during the race, after the race, both, or not at all?
