Why Do people Hate Minivans So Much?

I have a love/hate affair with Minivans. I have wanted one forever due to the practical nature of them, and the idea of sliding hands-free doors, but the "uncool" factor has kept me away. I have an 8 year old Saab coupe and a minivan would be very useful in my day to day life, but I love pulling into a soccer game being the only car out of 20 minivans in a row.

If I can save up for another year or two and pound my car into the ground, i'd love to get a gently used Q7 with 7 seats.

I have a Nissan Rogue and I  it!!! Mini vans are ugly to me. The Rogue is not the cutest SUV,but it was too good of a deal to pass up. I'm just excited to be driving a car that is not 20 years old!

Every few decades or so has it's cycle of vehicles:

In the early 70's:
Growing up, my DF had a van-not the decked out don't come a knockin van-but 2 seats and floor van that was his work van, we never rode in it as a family. He had a station wagon at one time that was also a work vehicle, never rode in it.
I recall dusters, a gremlin, then the bigger cars. it seemed like everyone had a big car. Then the gas crisis came, so those bigger cars and vans weren't in vogue anymore. Either they had a big car or a sporty car for us being a family.

The smaller foreign cars came into the spotlight. better on gas, etc.

Then later we seemed to be living large again some time after the gas crisis and eventually the mini van, suvs and hummers came into the "in" vehicles to get.
Once again, gas became higher, hummers which there were so many of, I hardly see around anymore, because they were so bad on gas. Now it's like the hybrids are the "it" vehicle, even hybrid suvs.

Also another thing is that people think there should be "rules" of how what ages etc we should have what cars:
In our youth, that is when we should have the sporty car-my first car was a pinto-yes, sexy lol. but I eventually got to sporty cars and haven't looked back.

then when you have kids no matter how many you should "conform" to the family vehicle. I have DD13, I don't need a mini van or suv.

But I have conformed a little: before DD was born I had a sporty car put 2 black stripes down the middle to break up the white and had forever had a personalized plate that you can no longer have on your car. After I had her, still had the car, because I keep my cars for years but toned down the plate.
My red sporty car no stripes, so that is my way of conforming. Plus I love sporty cars.

Then by the time your kids go off to college, go ahead and turn in that vehicle because "old" people drive town cars and the like, lol.

But admit if you see an older person driving a sporty car do you think: that person is having a mid life crisis? or do you think now the kids are gone they never had a sporty car before now or do you think maybe they have always loved sporty cars?

There is this woman who is older in my area, spring and summer she drives her red convertible big older car, it is beautiful looks brand new. I"m like go ahead and do what you like and enjoy it.

I know shouldn't but have to admit I think mid-life crisis.

Last year we were driving by a used car dealership and out front there was a red sports car with a huge sign next to it that said, "Here's your mid-life crisis cheap!

In my case I have driven high performance cars all my life and will continue to do so even if I ever begin to look old.:rolleyes1

I have a lot of friends who are the same way. But then there is the red Corvette convertible crowd, with an automatic of course, who really can't drive and yes that screams midlife crisis.

My newest car doesn't really draw attention unless somebody knows what it is. I've had several people follow me into gas stations. Where I can be found quite frequently.:sad1:

Finally another person who just doesn't give a rip and loves those cars all their lives!

Sorry people are creeping on you like that with the following to the gas station. I love a great car, but that would be too creeper for me,lol. I will look and admire and be on my way. Now if I'm at the gas station and see a car, yes I will say "hey is that such and such year model".

Oh I don't mind. Usually someone who knows what this car is is a 'car person' and a pleasure to talk to. I've also met a lot more people in the neighborhood who stop when they see it in the driveway. This is a GM town so people recognize it.

That is cool. I'm a girl and actually had a guy years ago start talking to me in the parking lot-my windows were down but my doors were locked and he was talking about my car and he tried to get in. So it would weird ME out if someone followed me a little, lol.

Okay THAT'S creepy!

Is it a Delorean? I'd be excited to see a Delorean.pirate:

I posted pictures earlier. It's just a Cadillac;)

Lots of grandmothers have minivans so they can transport their grandchildren.

Just curious...What image does one give off driving a Jeep?

Must be one that says "oh look at me, I'm young and fit" :rolleyes1

Apparently only Mom's who wear sweats and don't care about their appearances drive Mini-vans :confused3

I'd rather drive a Mini -van and be comfortable then try to squeeze into something for the sake of keeping up with appearances :rolleyes1

Apparently driving a Mini-Van means you need a makeover :rotfl:

But not me......I'm fit and fabulous and foxy when I rock my Mini-Van ;)

My mom has been driving a Suburban since the later 70's, long before they were the "thing" to drive. I will have to tell her that she's a trend setter!!!

Ya know what she drove before she got the first Suburban????

You guessed it......A station wagon with wood panels on the side!!!

I rock my Mini-Van too! I certainly wouldn't turn down a makeover (umm...new clothes, new hair, a few hours of child free pampering? Yes please! What mom doesn't want that?), but I wouldn't say I'm in need of one! LOL!
I wear fashionable clothes (even accessories! *gasp*), get my hair "did" on a regular basis, and even put a little makeup on my face most days! (shocking I know)
I could honestly give a flying flip if people *think* I'm cool when I'm driving around in my minivan!
(and lets face it, people who ARE cool don't think about what other people think is/isn't cool, only the people who are TRYING to be cool do that!)

Count me in for loving my mini van. I have a Hyundai Entourage. It is great for hauling gear when camping, it will take lots of equipment. I can even put my bicycle in the back standing up when the back seats are folded down. I don't care if people think it is not cool. That's their problem, I love my mini van.
