5/2/01- Weather is wonderful, sunny w/ a few clouds.
We decide to go to Animal Kingdom first thing in the morning to get a jump on the safari animals. We walk up and find Chip and Dale at the entrance, girls run for their autographs and NO ONE leaves to go to the bathroom
. We walk all the way to Kilimanjaro safaris to get a fast pass and then walk on the ride because the line is so short!! Yaaaay! 2 safaris back to back! All
the animals are up and about. The safari is beautiful, you have to look hard to see how the animals are enclosed; clearly this has a positive effect on the animals behavior because they seem to be relaxed and acting normally (not like zoos). Grumpy actually seems to be enjoying himself, he's working the video camera.
The girls are all loving going through the streams and the bumpy ride and no fighting! Mom smiles to herself.
We round the corner to see elephants "playing", one elephant is scratching his belly on the ground and then stands up. Bashful blurts out " Look! That elephant has two trunks..... oh never mind....*BIG BLUSH*" Apparently
that wasn't an elephant trunk, of course Grumpy zooms right in with the video camera, Mom slaps him silly. It seems I will have some editing when I get home.
We use fast pass for the second safari, walk past a HUGE line this time, and am really enjoying walking past the sea of faces looking at us like "How come you get to walk right up to the front?" It still amazes me why more people don't take advantage of fast pass, what a great system.
We leave Animal Kingdom grudgingly, knowing we will be back later to see it again. We head off to Blizzard Beach and stake out our spot. We take the ski lift to the top of the hill and when I go to get off, somehow my lower leg gets stuck under the seat edge and I bruise the back of my knee BIG TIME. Ouch. After waiting 10 minutes at the top for the tubes to come back up (conveyor belt problem) we zip down Teamboat Springs
screaming all the way. We go to get out of our tube, no one has a problem getting out but me. The current takes the tube (with my right leg still in it) so I'm hopping after the tube trying to get my leg out before I fall. My family shakes their head, knowing how graceful I am, when the inevitable happens and down I go!! Older daughters disown me. Grumpy laughs hysterically but does recover enough to help me up. Older DDs decide to be slugs on the beach and get a tan. Grumpy and Bashful decide to talk mom into going on the Double Dipper, a fairly steep ride on a tube where you race the other person and your time shows up on a board. I'm not a very brave person and this one scares me! Bashful
gives me courage..."Mom, I'm only eleven, you can do it!". After another long wait at the top for the tubes (what IS the deal with those conveyor belts anyway?) we get ready to go, I'm racing Bashful. You go through a dark tunnel first (the steep part). My turn to go, the board goes down and I'm off, screaming the whole way until at the end of the tunnel a whole bunch of cold water drops on me, choking off the screams so I'm sputtering instead... I still win!
After 4 hours of water and sun, we go back to Animal Kingdom and head for the Tree of life. Beautiful animals cover the tree, they say over 300 animals are carved into the tree! We head into "A Bug's life", I step around a big puddle of red soda but the bratty 3 yr old behind me jumps square into it leaving me covered with red sticky stuff AAARRRGGH! I shake most of it off my leg onto the 3 yr old's mom (HEH HEH HEH) and find a seat.
This show is great!!! The surprises in the seats weren't as bad as some had said, I thought they were great!
We head over to Kali river rapids so I can wash the soda off (on these types of rides I always seem to be on the side that gets drenched). Beautiful theming on the way into the ride! Sure enough, I'm on the drenched side of the boat...but it feels so goood. I'm no longer sticky, just squishy.
We walk around more just enjoying the beautiful park. This one is clearly my favorite, I could spend a few more days here. The misters are all going, temporary break in the drought I guess. We decide to ride Dinosaur; Well, all except the evil queen, she wimps out. Line is very short and we get on. We wisely keep Bashful in the middle, we're in the very front seat so we'll have a great view. Great thrill ride, everyone loves it. If you ride this ride, make sure you get the back left seat in the car!!
We watch the Lion King show. WOW! What a performance! You have to see this! After the lion king show, we walk over to Camp Minnie-Mickey and there are characters everywhere! Even Piglet, we didn't think we had a chance of seeing him. Once again the girls and I get in line, we get up to the front and ... you guessed it. Tigger and Piglet have to go to the bathroom. UNBELIEVABLE. But we wait, no one fights and mom smiles. The girls get them and also Mickey, Minnie, Eeyore, Pooh, Pluto, Goofy, Daisy and Baloo. In the line for Mickey and Minnie, old hag (sorry, cast member) acts like a school marm and starts yelling at everyone; Hurry up, don't take so much time, don't run up to the characters, have your books open and pens ready, etc. Evil queen casts a look at her that I'm sure contains her whole spell book. What a shame.
Tomorrow, my conference day. The family heads to Epcot. Next: I walked halfway across the world for your
Beavertail!!
