My wife's had one for a while and while in Florida I bought one of the new ones, but I can't work out how to connect it to my PC and set up an account on Itunes without it transferring all DWs music onto it.

How do I set up Itunes so that it recognises two different Ipods and treats them separately? I can't have Sugababes and Pussycat Dolls on my Ipod!

i'm sure when i plugged my new ipod into my dh's itunes i had to register my ipod separatley then i just dragged the tracks and playlists i wanted onto my ipod so i didn't end up with all his dodgy stuff!!!

I think there is something to do with registration involved here; better check the apple site for some help though..

you can make your i tunes the "home" of more than one ipod, you need to register the ipod as normal and then before you plug it into your pc for the first time to download your music you need to go into the preference menu (in the edit menue) or press ctrl+ to access it and select the sharing tab, tick the box that says share my music and then just tick the boxes of the playlists that you want on your ipod and leave the ones that you don't want, the just plug in your usb as normal and the update will run automatically. Then if you want different playlists on your DWs Ipod then just go in change the ticks from your playlists to hers and then plug in the ipod to update.

The only drawback with this is that you need to be quite organised and have your tunes split into playlists, I have three ipods running from my one itunes account and software and once you have done it one you will get used to it.

I hope that helps, PM me if you need any help with it at all.

Apologies for a bit of an highjack here.

My neighbour's PC had a critical failure last week. They asked me to look at it. It turned out to be a harddrive failure. I have rebuilt the system for them, however, their son has an iPod already loaded with music. Unfortunately, his library on the PC has been lost and when he connects the iPod it now it asks him if he would like to replace all the music on his iPod with the new (empty) library.

Is there any way in which he can create a library on his PC from what is on his iPod? I would assume he would need to go through iTunes to prove legitimacy of the music, but I've just been around to their house and cannot find anything under iTunes support. :confused3

You may regret saying that!! I think I've got it but I'm not sure. :confused3

No problem - have a go and see if you can do it other wise drop me a line!

Richard Bruvofetc - I was only thinking about this today as I am hoping to sell a lot of the cds that I have loaded so would be interested to find out if it's possible to back up the music. - the only thing that I can think of is burning all of the MP3 to a DVD. Maybe a recovery service would be able to get the itunes library back for him??

Having suffered a computer crash I can say unfortunately that iTunes doesn't do this, although lots of thirdware software professes to do it. Apple seemingly were concerned about copyright.
As I didn't have a backup I had to reload all my cd's again.

I was given the following links from apple

Instructions for backing up your media in iTunes 5 or 6 http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n302392

Instructions for making regular, incremental backups http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93474

Instructions for backing up and restoring playlists http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93763

I thought this would probably be the case. Unfortunately, all his music was downloaded from iTunes, so of course, he's paid his 79p per track (and is a "poor" teenager!!). I know very little about iPods (I'm a Toshiba Gigabeat person - twice the power; half the price :thumbsup2 ), so I don't know whether his iTunes account will allow him to download again. I suppose in essence, it would be a little like going into Virgin Megastores and saying "The dog chewed up all my CDs. Here's my receipt, can I have replacements please?".

I'd better train him up in the art of "Back-Up".

You can get your music from the IPod back into your ITunes library. Our laptop crashed the other week. I found how to do it on the Apple site. I am just off to find the instructions again and I will post it here.

With regards to Ipods and music libraries. We have 4 IPods Minis and 3 Nanos. We all have separate accounts under XP and all the ITunes are specific to that user account.

I used Copypod (Click) and it worked superbly. It copies everything from your ipod into itunes.

I have used these instructions to put my IPods back onto a desktop and later on to a new desktop. They work but you have to follow them exactly. Playlists and purchased music lists will not be returned. The whole library will including purchased music. This method was tested using ITunes for Windows 4.2, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 and Windows XP.

Start with the IPOD DISCONNECTED from the computer - DON'T CONNECT IPOD YET.

Open ITunes.

Open ITunes preferences - this blocks ITunes from seeing an IPod connection LEAVE THE PREFERENCES WINDOW UP AND RUNNING.

Connect the IPod to the computer, wait about 15 seconds before continuing.

Open 'My Computer'.

Tools menu, Folder Options, View Tab, enable 'show hidden files/folders'.

Open IPod icon in my computer.

Open Ipod Control folder.

You should see a folder named music.

Drag this folder to somewhere on your computer hard drive.

After the copy completes, right click the new Music folder on your hard drive and select 'Properties'.

Clear the checkmark next to 'Hidden'.

Close that explorer window.

Eject Ipod from system tray 'safely remove hardware' icon. This icon looks like a small gray rectangle with a green arrow floating above it. It's only there when a removable device (like the IPod in this case) is attached to the computer. Right click and select 'safely remove...', then click 'stop' in the next window, ok in the next window, and then Close to complete the ejection.

DISCONNECT THE IPOD FROM THE COMPUTER.

Go back to ITunes, cancel the preferences window.

File menu/add folder to library/find that Music folder copied over from the Ipod.

Your ITunes library should now be back in action.

These are the instructions I followed. I would add it is easier to copy the music folder across to your desktop if you minimise the ITunes screen first. Also you have to leave the new music folder where you originally copied it, otherwise ITunes will not be able to find it.

Once you attach your IPod it will ask you if you want to use it with this library, then it will copy all the songs across.

Now I have to say I will not accept any blame if things go wrong. All I can say is I followed these instructions exactly with the family's IPods (6 of them) and it worked perfectly every time. Good luck!

Thanx for the instructions ~ I have copied them :thumbsup2

Glad to be of help. :) I was just glad there was a solution. It is easy to back up with the new ITunes though to a dvd.
