When you cross paths with someone you didn't know you crossed paths with before

I've had this happen a few times. At work, at school, on vacation. Someone you find out you worked with or went to school with, but you have no memory of. Or sometimes having you asking if maybe their claim isn't legit.

Last week, the University I attended announced they had appointed a new Regent. She graduated the same year I did. In the same major. I have never heard of her. Okay, I guess we might not have crossed paths in a University of 2,000 students, but there were only 50 people in my major! So I look her up, not in any yearbook. Not in any Alumi Directory under her maiden or married name. That fact that she is a wealthy business woman makes me wonder if she is legit.

I work with someone now, who apparently worked with me 30 years ago at another employer. The place my wife still works. Nobody remembers her. In that case, she apparently was there a matter of weeks, that makes sense.

DW and I went on a cruise to Alaska. I was wearing a shirt that said Sacramento on it. Guy comes up and says he used to live in Sacramento....and worked at ....my wife's employer, which was also my employer at the time. He said for over a year. He had no recollection of us, or us of him, and there were only about 130 employees there.

I can't say that I remember that happening, but I have always said what a small world it is and how you shouldn't say anything bad about anyone. There are SO many people that I have been talking to in the grocery store or one of my kids' sports tournaments and discovered that we had some sort of connection like... I worked for this person's cousin or something.

SO, are you saying she lied on her resume about attending the school and the university is not even able to look into their OWN records to confirm this person attended?
Or you think the university itself is lying?
I am confused.

In any event--yes, sometimes I draw a complete blank about someone who recalls me from the past. I always feel badly when that happens, but you know I have moved a lot and met tons of people and I guess it just does not all stick.
I have never flt someone was pretending to have had a connection with me and it really did not happen though.

I think it's a bit weird that you can't find her in the yearbooks or alumni guides. I don't think it's overly suspicious of you to have looked, being that her cv had the same major and graduation year as you... I would be curious too.

Happens a lot. Remembering people I went to school with 30 years ago can be a challenge if we were part of the same social circle. If we never met at all, why would I remember them.

Seems kind of crazy to question someone's credentials simply because you can't recall them from 30 years in the past.

This thread reminds me of a movie I saw recently- The Gift. It was actually a pretty terrible movie, IMO, and I kept watching thinking it would get better.

When I met my DH, he remembered meeting me 3 years prior. I remembered the event with other friends, even remembered specific conversations that he recalled, but did not recognize him at all. We were high school age at the time.

I'm terrible with names and faces. I have had many times where someone says we've met and I don't remember it. However, I don't usually question their story. I figure I have just forgotten. It is weird that you can't find substantiate the Regent's credentials. (However, I am not even sure my college had a yearbook. I don't recall ever having a photo taken, or submitting info for, a college year book or alumni directory... so you might not find me if you looked for me either.

Funny, while I have an uncanny ability to remember strange facts and other minutia, I suck at remember people. I have a hard enough time remembering people I met weeks ago, let alone 30 years earlier.

oh dude, is this so me.
One year me and the gang went on vacation to Canada. Dh and the boys went one way while I went shopping, or at least that;s how I remember it. lol come to find out my oldest went with me while my youngest went with my dh. I swear I don't remember the kid going with me. I can remember exactly what I brought but not that he was with me.

I suck royally at remembering faces. I did go to my 25th college reunion and honestly a lot of people changed drastically.

If Pitt had a yearbook I definitely didn't know about it but it's a large university. I had science classes that had 200 other students and were held in "halls".

I went to a university with 30,000 students. I'm pretty sure we didn't have a year book. I'm not sure I'd even be able to find people on an alumni site, not that I care enough to look.

Why would her being a wealthy business woman make her not legit? Would you say that about a man?

We had a yearbook at my university but most of the students didn't go to get their pictures in it-- I didn't after freshman year. Not sure anyone would be able to pull me up in the alumni site either.

I had this happen with someone that became by boss. When he took over our dept he told me he had met me the year before when he was here (he was over a different division). I have absolutely no recollection of ever setting eyes on him.

I had a coworker who claimed to have graduated HS from my school, in my class. I actually do remember her, but don't remember her being in my grade. She's not in any of my yearbooks, and I checked the grades above & below me too.

At our reunion (which coworker did not attend), a classmate's wife claimed to know me. Not, only did I not recall her, I didn't recall ANY of the alleged mutual friends she & I supposedly had. I'm thinking she mistook me for someone else LOL

I was thinking that too--if my university had a year book I was unaware of it, as was DH (we went to the school) and we never submit info for the alumni directories, etc---we are just not interested in that sort of thing. I think the school has finally lost track of us altogether and we no longer get please for monetary donations!

HA! I just went to my 30 year high school reunion last week. I talked to one guy and he asked me if I remembered him, and I drew a blank, he told me his name, still nothing....I looked him up in my yearbook after I came home and yes, he was there, but I still have zero recollection of who he is/was, so yes It odes happen.

As for the lady at the college: she could have changed her name, she might look different, she might have been quiet in class and never socialized. You seem overly suspicious, but if you are are, and you think she's a scammer or something, contact the university. But I wouldn't bother....I think they'd know for sure if she had attended there.

Oh if only! Somehow my college has managed to keep close tabs on me, and they call me ALL the time. :faint:
