When you cross paths with someone you didn't know you crossed paths with before

I agree with sugah-contact the University for clarification

WE once had a braggart at work who claimed to have several careers before and an Engineering degree-we got the name of the University he supposedly attended-and it was a small college that didn't offer engineering....but that was just office bragging

to have someone pretending to have graduated from your Alma mater and didn't should be exposed!

I think that it's a big risk for a university to lie about something so basic and something that could be so easily debunked. That certainly has caused the downfall of many people associated with colleges (I'm thinking of several high profile football coaches who were found to have fabricated their academic credentials).

Because you are in the media, if you think there is a fraud being perpetrated, you must feel an obligation to expose it other than on an anonymous message boards that has no affiliation with your school. Certainly you've taken some steps. Have you spoken to anyone on the Board of Regents about your concerns? Written a letter to the student newspaper for republication? Used your press privileges to speak to people at her business to find out more about her past and background? Used open source resources to see if you can confirm the information that is otherwise contained in the news release? It seems to me that you are uniquely positioned to uncover what is going on here.

One of my Fraternity brothers found her name in the 2010 alumni directory. And found her maiden name, and he discovered HE went to high school with her, and doesn't remember her there either! He is rummaging through boxes to find his high school year books. I suspect she just didn't respond to to all those postcards and phone calls from the alumni directory folks until the 2010 directory was being put together. Probably too busy with her career to keep up with the University until now. Sounds like she always few under the radar.

Phew. Glad there was a magical ending. I suspected there would be, but it's my nature not to think the worst of people until all the facts have been gathered.

I was thinking that too--if my university had a year book I was unaware of it, as was DH (we went to the school) and we never submit info for the alumni directories, etc---we are just not interested in that sort of thing. I think the school has finally lost track of us altogether and we no longer get please for monetary donations!

AFAIK, my college didn't have a yearbook either. They did print a graduation program with all the graduates' names, hometowns, and majors listed, and I still have that.

I never responded to any alumni mailings, and thankfully they lost track of me within five years after graduation.

As for not remembering HS or college classmates who remember me, yes, it's happened at least half a dozen times.

So let me get this right... if someone makes claims that you would be able to back up (attended school with them, worked at the same company, whatever), but you don't remember them, the more logical thought is they must be lying instead of your memory is faulty?

Sorry, that wouldn't fly with me. There were a handful of people in college (even in my major) that I would remember. The majority I wouldn't, and I didn't even go to a large university (~15K enrolled). At work, people working different shifts in different departments and not making a name for themselves, it would be very easy to "forget".

Well, it seems your suspicions and implied accusations against your university were unfounded.
Lots of people are fairly forgettable and many of us have faulty memories.

I do find it odd that you know exactly what was on the CV this person submitted to the university when being considered for the regent'S job.

I have only had it happen to me once when it comes to adults. I was working at a high school function. Some guy started talking to me like he totally knew me. He actually did call me by name when he saw me. His last name sounded familiar, BUT I only remember 2 people from school with that name and he was not one of them.

When it comes to younger people, it happens way too often. After having taught school for more years than I care to admit, names and even faces often escape me. Many times though, their appearances have changed soooooo much you just don't recognize them.

I have a very good memory and remember people, but there have been a number of times where I don't recall someone. It happens a lot on FB. I'll get a friend request and see that we went to school together and have 20 mutual friends but I don't remember them.

I also am about your age-college 40 years ago-and we had 10 Fine Art students with Painting studios-all together-we saw each other every single day,,,I can only remember 2 of their names now!

I was thinking the same thing. I went to a very large university, but my particular major/specialization only had 18 kids. I saw them every day. I'm facebook friends with 2 of them. I remember the names of 2 more. I can kind of vaguely remember a couple more, but I am not sure I'd recognize the rest at all. And I only graduated 20 years ago.

Occupation hazard. I attended a seminar taught by the Poynter Institute and the instructor said every answer from someone you are interviewing should have the follow up question.."Really, how can that be?"
That doesn't sound like a very good instructor.

Journalists that did not accept an unbelievable answer uncovered the Watergate, Iran Contra, Monica Lewinsky and other major news stories over the decades. Asking those followup questions served Erin Brockovich well too.

An unbelievable answer is different than what you quoted the instructor as saying.

Way back in the 70's your yearbook pic was your student ID pic- you HAD to take that pic- you could not skip it

Did they say this College Regent went to that college? Makes no sense
Back in the 70's, my school still didn't have any kind of yearbook. They still don't have one.

We have 4 college grads in our immediate family so far. There are several different undergrad and grad schools in our repertoire and none of us are listed on any of the alumni lists.

Let's not name people we think aren't legit or do any of that kind of sleuthing please. I deleted some posts that I think were going down a path not in keeping with the spirit of the DIS.

carry on...

Really, how could that be? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Are you a journalist?
