When staying at a disney resort how many of you tip your housekeepers

I've never tipped either, but this thread is interesting. I go out of town a lot and stay in hotels when need be, and have never tipped. It's actually never crossed my mind to be honest b

I didnt read threw all the post's, but this Nov trip we are renting dvc points and I know housekeeping will only clean 1x during our stay, so how much would you tip?

We left between 1-5$ a day, I like to keep more and my DBF feels less is fine so I would slip some more in the envelope daily. If you go to themouseforless.com they have cute envelopes that you can print out specifically for mousekeeping, they are cute and make things more fun! :goodvibes

We don't tip the housekeeping either- unless we're in Mexico or somewhere like that. If everyone left $5 a day times how many rooms they do. It is a personnal decision but we don't.

Say 2 rooms per hour = 16 rooms per 8 hour day
16 x $5.00 = $80.00 per day
$80.00 per day x 5 days per week = $400.00 per week
$400.00 per week x 50 weeks = $ 20,000 per year (tax free)

Plus their regular hourly wage. I'm not saying it's too much but it's not too bad either.

Regardless, we leave $20 for a 4-5 night stay, 2 people.

Interesting... we had the same housekeeper every day of our stay... The first day she took our $1 and some spare change we left for her.... she did a great job, not a spot anywhere... the next two days we left at least three dollars a day in the same spot and she left it every time.

Disney compensates their employees the minimum amount they think they can pay, just like my company. If Disney was not able to find people to do housekeeping at the wages offered, they would raise them.

Do you have any idea what Disney pays their employees? I have several relatives that work for Disney and it's truly sad. One has worked in Epcot as a coordinator and is still making under $10/hour.

Disney's philosophy is "it's a PRIVLEDGE to be working for Disney" and the compensation just isn't there.

As for tipping, yes, I tip the housekeeping staff. We have 6 people in our family and I tip $20/day.

I would think they have to pay minimum wage. Not that that is good, but many people are making it. I do still leave a tip, but $20/day seems a bit crazy to me.

To the person who said tax free, technically there is a section on your tax form for tips, which means it is only tax free, if you are going to withhold info on your income tax form. ;)

I tip daily if I use them. Often I am just there (solo) for three or four days and I decline housekeeping since I do not need daily fresh towels, garbage emptying, etc. I do leave a $5 tip at the end of my stay for whomever is cleaning up for the next guest.

When I stay DVC I tip a larger amount on the Trash and Tidy day.

We tip housekeeping everywhere we stay. Disney or Hilton, we always tip. These people are working very hard cleaning up other people's messes and they usually don't make mega bucks. We usually tip $4 or $5 a day. Everyone needs to know they are appreciated. On our family vacation last week (not at WDW unfortunately) we were apalled to learn one of our daughters stiffed housekeeping and didn't leave a single tip for a week's stay.

we've always tipped in every hotel we've ever stayed in. We're from NY... regional thing???

We usually tip $1 per day per person.

Hmm don't think it's a regional thing...we're from the midsouth. I think it's more of a manners thing. It's just the proper thing to do IMHO.

I have honestly never heard of tipping a housekeeper. I was a housekeeper as a teenager for about 3 years and I was never once tipped and never heard of any of my coworkers being tipped either. That being said we were being paid at LEAST $10 per hour which is really good wages for the area we live in when most people in hospitality make $7.25 but they ARE tipped positions. So I guess we were given more because we weren't expected to be tipped?

My parents were truck drivers and thus traveled literally every day and never tipped the housekeeper. I guess it depends on how you were taught growing up? :confused3

I asked my hubby and my mother-in-law and they said they had never heard of tipping housekeepers either. This is truly a new experience for me!

I don't usually tip, but only because we leave the do not disturb sign out for the whole week when we go on vacation. Since we don't get housekeeping all week there's no reason to leave out a tip.

That being said, if I ask housekeeping to send up any extra towels or blankets I do tip the person who schleps them to my room. Usually like $2 for the two of us.

I'm from NY too. Never stiffed the housekeeper, cabbie, etc. It doesn't amount to anything if you look at the big picture.

You are right. It's manners, consideration and the proper thing to do.

You must know that a lot of folks do not tip. Some will leave one or two dollars. I rather doubt that these mousekeepers are generating that much money per week on tips.

We tip if we use housekeeping which we typically do when on vacation. When I travel for business I generally decline housekeeping - tipping is not reimbursed by my company and frankly I refuse to pay for anything out of pocket while on the road for business. I like the idea of the envelopes and will probably use them for our December trip. Sometimes I wish you could add the tip to the room like you do at a restaurant -- I am so incredibly bad at remembering to have actual money on me.

I tip 2 dollars per person, per day plus one dollar. I tip every morning incase we don't get the same housekeeper. As long as I feel that they are doing a good job, I have no problem tipping them, regardless of their salary. For me, it's karma. No good deed goes unpunished....

We've never really thought about tipping housekeeping before.
We do try to make their job easier by always making sure we leave the room in order before heading out for the day. Trash always in trash cans and any overflow in walmart type bags. Towels to be replaced are left in a neat pile and we make sure to keep shoes, clothes, toys, and other personal items neatly put away in drawers, bags or on the racks.
