We're in NY>

My husband and I have Freshman Orientation the week before Labor Day.

My girls start school the Wednesday after Labor Day.

And this year, there's a new addition to the schedule: my son moves into his dorm on August 25.

We homeschool, but the school kids here go back the first week of September.
They normally finish near the end of June because on snow days, though they got out early this year.
For homeschool kids we need to complete 180 days of instruction which can't start until our objectives are handed in , and after June 30th, which is the last day of the year we can count for the previous year.
We normally "start" our year mid July or August and "finish" some time in February.

We don't have to but the building is open we can start going in the last week of aug to get our rooms ready. I am not happy that one of the reading books I got approval to use this year I can not get, I placed the order at the end of june to be here by the last week of aug and they are on backorder till December.

I'm curious. You said you had to be in the 5th, but it's actually optional. You don't have any Superintendent's Conference Days or anything like that?

Truthfully that doesn't seem as weird to me as working on Labor Day.

But as it turns out the pp doesn't have to work on labor Day. So it's a moot point.

I would rather work labor day. There is no way to get to family or travel by Christmas if you have to work Christmas Eve.

So would I. But in my experience in the unions I've been in, Labor Day has always been a holiday whereas Christmas Eve was just a regular day. I'm not a teacher though. I was just looking at it from a union point of view. It seemed weird that teachers would have to work on Labor Day. I have a number of teachers in my family and I live in the same stat as the PP and I've never heard of any of them having to work on Labor Day.

September 6th for my kids and I have to go back to work on September 5th for a teachers work day

So, you don't have to go back for a teacher's work day on September 5th? The building is open starting the last week of August so you just chose Labor Day to go in and get your room ready? That is quite different than a mandated work day.

I haven't heard of schools being opened or anyone in the education field working on Labor Day either.

I've never heard of that, either. In our district, in order for a school building to be open, someone has to unlock it and be there while the building is in use. That's usually either an administrator and/or a custodian. That means that at least one of them would be required to work Labor Day, which would never happen since it is officially a district holiday.

That's another good point. Where I live the custodians are union. I can't imagine the district paying them holiday pay to open the building just in case a teacher happened to show up that day.

wow college starts early for most-dd's doesn't start back up till 9/21!

I believe that poster may be from New Jersey. Public schools cannot start before September 1. Most schools still start after Labor Day, but some start before when there is time, such as when Labor Day is on September 5, 6 or 7.
If you're referring to me, no, I am not from New Jersey. :)

We don't call them finals but mid term exam week is the last week in January. I agree that December would be way too early if they started before Labor Day.
Mid-terms here are......mid-term, so at the end of the quarter for each semester. No dead week with mid-terms like finals that are at the end of the terms in December and May.

Our classes are a full year. So Midterms in January and finals in June. Both have designated testing weeks with no regular classes.

Same here. I know some other districts in my area have regular classes during midterms. But in our district kids only go in to take their tests.

Same here, no classes at the end of the First or Second semester, just Finals. Most classes are full year, but many electives are just one semester.

my kids never knew what it was like to have off from school any legal holiday (other than Christmas and Thanksgiving) from k-8th. granted, they went a private school-but their private school system was unlike any other in that it never gave legal holidays off b/c they 'traded' them in exchange for the kids getting one 4 1/2 day weekend per month (out at noon on Wednesday not to return until Monday morning).

ours still have 'classes'-it's just that single period classes are given 2 periods for each final so your finals occur over the period of a week but you won't be attending every class every day of that week. now for graduating seniors-their finals for the final quarter are done a full week prior to all other students (to ensure they qualify to graduate). when their finals are completed they only have to come to school for a couple of grad practices.

No we don't have to go in but the building will be open if we want to go in and get stuff done.

We have some half year classes in the middle and high school, but the core subjects are all full year
