Don't shoot me for mentioning it, but this is a bit of a spin off from another thread about when kids go back.

I know it varies from early Aug to mid September for traditional calendar schools.

Just a nosy question.

Yeah, here they passed some law that says you need to start school the Monday closest to Aug. 25th. And you must end by June 9th. I hadn't heard of this law but the secretary at the school told me.

Our first day is August 16th. We have a law that school can't start before the 3rd week of August. Before that law went into place schools typically started the first week of August. This year, our county was trying to get an exception from the law to start at the beginning of August, but it didn't happen.

ETA: I didn't realize everywhere had laws stating when school can start. When ours went into effect (not too many years ago) it was said it would help tourism...

I dont have kids but selected after labor day since my entire area always starts on the wed after labor day. Its been that way since at least when I started kindergarden.

Our first day back is September 6th. Like a PP I live in Michigan so school always starts after Labor Day.

We are going to WDW and get back Saturday the 3rd so I will have to have their school supply shopping done before we go. DD6's list is actually reasonable. We may have to take a loan out for DD10's list though. Yikes. So many folders and notebooks in specific colors. I get that teachers do it to make the classroom a bit more organized and such but dear lord, it seems a bit anal at times.

I live in NJ and we start the day after Labor Day. Teachers start the week before.

Way too early - August 10th. I hate it.

ETA: We have no laws regarding when it starts, as far as I know.

That's how our law in Michigan came to be - promote tourism. A year or so ago there was a push to change it, and little by little there are a few districts that have won waivers to start earlier.

I don't think we have a law for when schools can start. There is quite a range around us. My kids start in mid-August. It used to be late August but they adjusted the schedule a couple of years ago. Now, they can get a full semester finished before winter break. And they get out for the summer before Memorial Day.

Northern Delaware follows the Northeasten US norm: after Labor Day.

Many southern Delaware schools start a week or two before Labor Day.

My youngest is in college but I'm a teacher so I answered. In Texas, schools cannot start before the week of August 21st so this year it's 8/22.

My daughter goes back to school on August 8. She has only been out since June 9. They have a very short summer break.

Used to live in MI, and the law about Labor Day went into effect when DS16 was maybe in about 2nd or 3rd grade (around 2006-2007?). Before that, his school district always started the week before Labor Day. And he wouldn't get out until mid-June.

Now we live in IL, and the kids got out on May 25th, and go back Aug 22.

I think those districts are mostly down state though aren't they? All the districts up here start after Labor Day because all the local businesses need the high school kids to work.

The colleges all start before Labor Day though which I always found odd.

The first year I moved to Kentucky the local schools went back July 31st which seemed so ridiculous.

I think Rockford and Jackson maybe? I've been keeping a closer eye on it lately as the kiddos are now K and 1st in the fall...figures there's a push to change it up now.
