They're making you come in on Labor Day? You must have some crappy teachers union.

True, but this year Labor Dayi is Sept. 5th, so school could start on the 1st.
We don't have to but the building is open we can start going in the last week of aug to get our rooms ready. I am not happy that one of the reading books I got approval to use this year I can not get, I placed the order at the end of june to be here by the last week of aug and they are on backorder till December. They're making you come in on Labor Day? When I was growing up we always went back the wed after labor dayI believe that poster may be from New Jersey. Public schools cannot start before September 1. Most schools still start after Labor Day, but some start before when there is time, such as when Labor Day is on September 5, 6 or 7.

Just curious, what's the 1st strongest? One year we had to come on Christmas Eve. I think I had 5 kids show up the entire day combined in all my classes.
We had the 2nd strongest union in the country.

I would be finding another school district to work for if they made Labor Day a Teacher Work Day and teachers have to go in. You HAVE to go in on Labor Day? That really stinks.September 6th for my kids and I have to go back to work on September 5th for a teachers work day

Truthfully that doesn't seem as weird to me as working on Labor Day.One year we had to come on Christmas Eve. I think I had 5 kids show up the entire day combined in all my classes.

I am curious--do kids actually start mid year ON their birthday? or did you mean they would start in January when aged 5? (hoenst question--I don't know how thigns work in NZ)In NZ our kids start school last week of Jan or 1st week of Feb, we have 4 terms of 9-11ish weeks split by 2 week holidays with the school year ending Mid Dec.
Everyone starts school on their 5th birthday.

They start on their birthday (or the next school day) all through the year.
At my daughters school they do a 10 week school visit program so my DD who will be turning 5 in September goes every Friday until then, when she turns 5 she will start school in year 0.
Then next year she will be in Year 1. For those whose birthdays are before the end of May then they start in Year 1.
