True, but this year Labor Dayi is Sept. 5th, so school could start on the 1st.

I believe that poster may be from New Jersey. Public schools cannot start before September 1. Most schools still start after Labor Day, but some start before when there is time, such as when Labor Day is on September 5, 6 or 7.

They're making you come in on Labor Day? You must have some crappy teachers union.
We don't have to but the building is open we can start going in the last week of aug to get our rooms ready. I am not happy that one of the reading books I got approval to use this year I can not get, I placed the order at the end of june to be here by the last week of aug and they are on backorder till December.

When I was growing up we always went back the wed after labor day

One year we had to come on Christmas Eve. I think I had 5 kids show up the entire day combined in all my classes.

We had the 2nd strongest union in the country.

Our state passed something saying school can't start before the state fair is over or something like that. Kids go back on the 23rd of August.

I wish we had year round school here with the two week breaks every couple months. That would be so much better. Summer is hard on my kids in terms of routine.

Mine go back August 22nd which I find too early. It's still so hot out in August. I grew up in NY and we always went back after Labor Day.

After we had a crazy number of snow days the head of my sons' private school found a way to completely avoid snow days. When snow days are called middle school students are expected to log into the school's web information portal for 1/2 day worth of class work. The can be, but isn't limited to YouTube lectures posted by teachers, reading assignments, writing/research assignments, scheduled class chat sessions, etc. For some reason this counts for a school day for all of the students.

September 6th for my kids and I have to go back to work on September 5th for a teachers work day
I would be finding another school district to work for if they made Labor Day a Teacher Work Day and teachers have to go in. You HAVE to go in on Labor Day? That really stinks.

One thing you have better, you only have to go in one day before the children. Teachers around here have to go back a week before the students.

Oh sorry, I must have misread. I thought you said you had to go in. Choosing to go in is a completely different story.

Truthfully that doesn't seem as weird to me as working on Labor Day.

But as it turns out the pp doesn't have to work on labor Day. So it's a moot point.

In NZ our kids start school last week of Jan or 1st week of Feb, we have 4 terms of 9-11ish weeks split by 2 week holidays with the school year ending Mid Dec.
Everyone starts school on their 5th birthday.

They start on their birthday (or the next school day) all through the year.
At my daughters school they do a 10 week school visit program so my DD who will be turning 5 in September goes every Friday until then, when she turns 5 she will start school in year 0.
Then next year she will be in Year 1. For those whose birthdays are before the end of May then they start in Year 1.
