But that doesn't make sense...
1) Labor Day is the first Monday in September.
2) School starts the day after Labor Day.

The earliest Labor Day can be is September 1. Meaning the earliest school could start would be September 2. Of course, lawmakers don't generally understand logic. :teacher:
The earliest school can start is Sept 1st.

We live in one of the two German states with the latest summer break in teh country--DS17's last day of school this year will be next week on Wednesday--July feels like it takes forever.
He goes back on September 12th.

It kind of stinks beucase the cousins in Colorado are out right around Memorial Day and go back August 18--so there is not much overlap for the kids to vist one another when we do spring for airfare overseas (same is now holdign true for my oldest who is at uni in the US and is out much sooner than my son, but goes back right after he is on summer break).

Wow, that's early. When did summer start for them?
I would bet that it is a year round calendar with that as a start date---unlikely to be the end of a true summer break, in my experience.

August 8th for high school. Son starts 3rd year of college on 8/15.

Our school doesn't have a week off in the fall like others in the area do. I find that frustrating since they all start and stop at the same time.

tuesday Sept. 6th. We usually go back the Wednesday after Labor day.
They do have 4 holidays in October though, so they probably had to make up the day somehow.

September 6th for my kids and I have to go back to work on September 5th for a teachers work day

I live in Ontario, Canada, and lived in Alberta when I was younger. As far as I know, all the schools in those two provinces start after Labour Day - usually the Tuesday, but sometimes they will have a "PD" Day on the Tuesday and the kids start on the Wednesday. I remember being quite shocked when I learned that some US schools go back earlier!

Kids here go back August 18, elementary, jr high, and high schools.

Sept 1st. Our state law is Sept 1st or the day after Labor Day, whichever comes first.

So, you always start on September 1st then? Seems like a weirdly written law when September 1st is ALWAYS going to come first. Why not just say that you start on September 1st (or the next week day (if September 1st is a Saturday, Sunday, or Labour Day)?

I think the confusion was the "whichever comes first" in the post above. The comment that the day after Labor Day can't actually be the one that comes first is correct, so I would read it as school starts September 1st, unless that's Labor Day, in which case school starts the day after. Is that right?

ETA - just saw another poster typed the same thing more quickly.

True, but this year Labor Dayi is Sept. 5th, so school could start on the 1st.

Our public schools start the day after Labor Day, but the college where I work starts ON Labor Day. So I'll be teaching that day but my kids and DH will be off.

The earliest school can start is Sept 1st.
That pretty much was the way it was here, but then they decided it was better to have finals before Christmas, and there is no way to do that without starting before September 1st.

We don't call them finals but mid term exam week is the last week in January. I agree that December would be way too early if they started before Labor Day.

Thank you. I missed the part in the earlier post about "whichever comes first". I just saw Sept 1 or the day after Labor Day.

why so early

They have a lot of breaks, get out before Memorial weekend and so need to fit in the requited number of school days

DD's school district is actually a week later starting than usual this year
