That's another good point. Where I live the custodians are union. I can't imagine the district paying them holiday pay to open the building just in case a teacher happened to show up that day.
Last year we had a lot of us show up on labor day to get stuff done for the opening of school the next day. We have someone at the school all summer doing stuff around the school for upkeep on the grass and other stuff that needs to be done like painting and doing the floors.

My youngest is in college and goes back the day after Labor Day, but my grandkids go back Aug 2 this year. It seems early, but they get 2 weeks in Oct, 1 week at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas and 2 weeks spring break, then get out at the end of May.

I understand that. My brother-in-law is a school custodian. He works all summer. But he doesn't work on Labor Day because it's a holiday.

Teachers are back on August 8th and the student come back on the 16th.

Something like that wasn't unheard of when I went to school. Two or three times Rosh Hashanah fell in early to mid September soon after school started and we had off.

Looks like NYC schools are off for a Muslim holy day on September 12. And classes go to June 28!!

We added 2 Muslim holidays and Chinese New Year (that isn't the official name) to our calendar last school year.

I don't mind having so many days off during the year and getting out later since it means we don't return to school in August.

However, next year's schedule is just nuts. We have school on June 26. We're out for a Muslim holiday on June 27. Then the last day of school is June 28-which is a half day. Why not just end the year on the 26?

I guess I'm confused why you called it a teacher work day then and that it was when you have to go back. It's not.
It's an optional teachers work day, I am planning to go in for a few hours and do some final prep.

Wow that is stupid. Why do they keep adding all these holidays in nyc, and what does this do to regents week.

I'm a teacher and in my district, teachers are back to work August 29. Students start August 31. If I remember correctly, our teacher's contract states that we can not start more than 1 week before labor day.

Labor Day is a state holiday.

It's a state civil holiday. I find it curious that the school would be able to find custodial staff willing to come in on a paid holiday (a holiday that is also spelled out in union contracts) but since they'd be paid double time for working on a legal holiday maybe that's the incentive. That makes it even more curious though since budgets are so tight that public schools don't tend to do things that require them to pay their workers double time, especially when teachers are free to go into their classrooms the week before, on regular, non legal holidays where the custodians are already scheduled for normal work hours. Things that make you go hmmm

Good question but our district has done this the last few years when we start the day after labor day.

July 27 at 7:25 am. I can't participate in the poll because the OP didn't anticipate a start that early. Back to school shopping is nearly complete. DS had his orientation today. DD has hers on Friday. Schedules have been confirmed. Now haircuts, new shoes bus assignments is all we have left to do.
