We don't have to but the building is open we can start going in the last week of aug to get our rooms ready. I am not happy that one of the reading books I got approval to use this year I can not get, I placed the order at the end of june to be here by the last week of aug and they are on backorder till December.
Truthfully that doesn't seem as weird to me as working on Labor Day.
But as it turns out the pp doesn't have to work on labor Day. So it's a moot point.
So would I. But in my experience in the unions I've been in, Labor Day has always been a holiday whereas Christmas Eve was just a regular day. I'm not a teacher though. I was just looking at it from a union point of view. It seemed weird that teachers would have to work on Labor Day. I have a number of teachers in my family and I live in the same stat as the PP and I've never heard of any of them having to work on Labor Day.I would rather work labor day. There is no way to get to family or travel by Christmas if you have to work Christmas Eve.
September 6th for my kids and I have to go back to work on September 5th for a teachers work day

I haven't heard of schools being opened or anyone in the education field working on Labor Day either.
That's another good point. Where I live the custodians are union. I can't imagine the district paying them holiday pay to open the building just in case a teacher happened to show up that day.I've never heard of that, either. In our district, in order for a school building to be open, someone has to unlock it and be there while the building is in use. That's usually either an administrator and/or a custodian. That means that at least one of them would be required to work Labor Day, which would never happen since it is officially a district holiday.
If you're referring to me, no, I am not from New Jersey.I believe that poster may be from New Jersey. Public schools cannot start before September 1. Most schools still start after Labor Day, but some start before when there is time, such as when Labor Day is on September 5, 6 or 7.

In Michigan we have a law that prevents public schools from starting before Labor Day.
Mid-terms here are......mid-term, so at the end of the quarter for each semester. No dead week with mid-terms like finals that are at the end of the terms in December and May.We don't call them finals but mid term exam week is the last week in January. I agree that December would be way too early if they started before Labor Day.
Our classes are a full year. So Midterms in January and finals in June. Both have designated testing weeks with no regular classes.Mid-terms here are......mid-term, so at the end of the quarter for each semester. Same here. I know some other districts in my area have regular classes during midterms. But in our district kids only go in to take their tests. Our classes are a full year. So Midterms in January and finals in June. Both have designated testing weeks with no regular classes.
Same here, no classes at the end of the First or Second semester, just Finals. Most classes are full year, but many electives are just one semester.Same here. I know some other districts in my area have regular classes during midterms. But in our district kids only go in to take their tests.

No we don't have to go in but the building will be open if we want to go in and get stuff done. So, you don't have to go back for a teacher's work day on September 5th? The building is open starting the last week of August so you just chose Labor Day to go in and get your room ready? That is quite different than a mandated work day.
We have some half year classes in the middle and high school, but the core subjects are all full yearSame here. I know some other districts in my area have regular classes during midterms. But in our district kids only go in to take their tests.
