Our county got a waiver, so our public school is starting August 31st in Michigan.

Are you Jackson or Rockford? Or is there another one now? I know there were a couple that were granted 4 year waivers.

Son starts back to college on August 17.

He gets almost 3 weeks off since he took classes this summer. Such is the life of a college student.

Too early--Aug. 24th. I wish we started after Labor Day. The kids did not even get out of school until mid-June. We have a lot of professional development days and are off for more holidays than some school systems.

We added 2 Muslim holidays and Chinese New Year (that isn't the official name) to our calendar last school year.

I don't mind having so many days off during the year and getting out later since it means we don't return to school in August.

However, next year's schedule is just nuts. We have school on June 26. We're out for a Muslim holiday on June 27. Then the last day of school is June 28-which is a half day. Why not just end the year on the 26?

We did the opposite here a few years ago. When we moved to my city the public schools had off 3 days for the Jewish holidays and Good Friday. At one point they eliminated the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah as a no school day. Then people were asking to have days off for Muslim holidays, Diwali, Chinese New Years etc. A few years ago the City decided to eliminate all religious days off instead they are excused absences for any kid who takes them off with a parental note and are no tests/no projects due days. The teacher's union requested a 1/2 day for Good Friday. If your kid needs any of the religious holidays off and cares about perfect attendance I guess that could be an issue.

I know Boston has a city holiday on June 17th (Bunker Hill Day) and one year school ended on June 18th. As a student that would have annoyed me. I know there has been talk about eliminating the holiday at least as a day off but not sure what the current status is.

We had Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur off even when I went to Catholic grammar school.

Philadelphia public schools were closed, and we had off whenever the public schools were closed. I don't know if this was a Diocese-wide policy, or just for our school. We were two blocks away from the local public school.

The nuns didn't want any of those bad Public kids hanging out by the Catholic school and possibly causing trouble. Or at least that's the reason our parents told us.

We had a few days off that the Publics didn't. I suppose some bad Catholic kids went by the public school and taunted the Publics.

We have a bad schedule this year IMO. We start on August 16 and the last day of school is June 7th (with June 8th as inclement weather make-up). There are 35 days off between when school starts and ends. I wish we'd either start later, or end earlier with less days off during the school year. 35 days is way too much.

I would think that it was because the Diocese had arrangemnts with the public schools for busses.

My daughter goes back on August 31. We live in Northeast PA and the Wednesday before Labor Day is our usual start date.
