our kids come back aug 11th they have moved it forward so high schoolers can get mid terms done before christmas break,,, but they did air condition all class rooms about 5 years ago,,, central Il is hot in august...

We go back the day after Labour Day and finish the last week of June (it was June 29th this year).

We get 2 weeks at Christmas and one week in March. Those are all our breaks other than some long weekends. The school year in Ontario is at least 194 days.

I am hearing that some districts are moving to 185 days. I am worried this may be a trend to add more and more days.

What I would love to see is a summer program for the inner city kids that fall behind once school lets out for the summer. I think it would keep these kids off the streets during the summer.

Many places have them. Where I came from did.

Kids go to school 40 weeks here, minus teacher training days (1 per term), and public holidays.

Public holidays vary from state to state.

Around here we only have summer school for the kids that fail, not the kids that need to be kept on a schedule to stay out of trouble.

I am quite sure your school also has an ESY program which as a teacher you should know about considering the teachers are heavily involved with not only identifying educationally at risk kids that would benefit from an ESY but also because they participate in IEP meetings where the need for an ESY is typically addressed on a case by case basis.

ESY is not the same thing as summer school. Also there's tons of programs already in place for NYC inner city kids to keep them out of trouble.

Other parts of New York State definitely have this program. Here's an example of one from Ulster County.

Our school did a summer reading program and not one student showed up that got a letter. We had students that did not need the service show up. This is what bugs me as a teacher, You can tell parents that their child needs help and some just don't care. I just wish there was a way to do more so these kids don't fall through the cracks, The no child left behind has hurt a lot of these kids because they are just pushed through the system .

That is for kids in preschool

Really? Preschool is when it all starts you know...... Preschool is part of a public school, especially pre-school disabled programs that every school has to deal with one way or another and yes even those young kids can need an ESY.

This is nation wide so yes your school would have this as well.

Regulations: Part 300 / B / 300.106

Sec. 300.106 Extended school year services.

(a) General.

(1) Each public agency must ensure that extended school year services are available as necessary to provide FAPE, consistent with paragraph (a)(2) of this section.

Yep....here are three great ones in Upstate NY that are all part of the same national organization:

http://horizonsatharley.org/
http://www.monroecc.edu/depts/acadserv/horizons-at-mcc/

ETA: These are not ESY programs like TheIncredibles! is talking about. They are free school-day-length programs to prevent the summer learning gap and are administered by other local schools and colleges and offered free to city students. They are in collaboration with the city schools, however.

Silly, silly, me. I was on my phone and only grabbed one link.

Here's reference to an ESY program at the High School and Elementary levels in New Paltz: http://textlab.io/doc/8851299/meeting-agenda---new-paltz-central-school-district

Here's one in Rondout that specifies that it is K-12: http://www.rondout.k12.ny.us/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=19869137

So it seems like it is a common program in that part of the state. And, of course, as a PP pointed out, it's a nationwide initiative.

Perhaps. Our particular Catholic school used an independent charter bus service, however.

I wonder if part of the Diocese used the public school busses so they kept the same schedule for all of the schools? We're in NJ, and that's how it works with our local Catholic school. Obviously, Philly is much larger, so I'm just guessing.
