86 y/o DGGM (great-grand-ma) wants to go to the straw market in Nassau. Are there wheelchairs available as they are in the parks? (Is this a stupid question?) How much of a walk from the pier to the market? How often do boats make a return trip to the ship from Nassau? Thanks for any help.

As far as the straw market goes...I took my daughter there in her stroller and was not able to get down most of the aisles with it. There are boxs in the aisles, the vendors have their chairs out in the aisles and it was a VERY tight fit on the ones I could get down with the stroller so a wheelchair would not get down many aisles. It would be a bit of a walk there though for an 86year old. We took a carraige ride and it dropped us off at the straw market at the end of the ride and we walked back to the ship, i was about a 10 minute walk.

Not a stupid question, but unfortunately they do not have wheelchairs for rent on the ship and I did not see any thing at port. The other thing to remember is that other countries do not have disabled accessable laws and so their streets are NOT wheelchair friendly. What I would suggest is getting a cab right off the ship if your GGM can walk a little. Then drive to the market and see if you could negotiate paying the driver to wait for you for the inconvenience. Then you would have a ride back.

The only wheelchairs they have on board are for people who are injured after boarding. They don't have anything for someone who has a medical problem prior to boarding.

You also might get some advice on the DIS abilities board but I notice from your count down clock you don't have a lot of time. Have a great cruise!

Oh, they also do have sand wheelchairs on a first come first serve basis on castaway cay.

domiii--Wheelchairs are not available on the ship. My DM70 needed to stop and sit 4 times on our walk from the ship to the straw market. She is VERY stubborn and refused to take a cab to or from the straw market. Insisted she could walk.

If you wanted to take a cab once off the ship you will need to walk the length of the ship then another city block before you get to the blockades that are now set up for security purposes. Once at the blockades you can get a taxi to take you the rest of the way. On the way back there are usually cabs along Bay St. so you shouldn't have to ask one to wait for you.
