What's your personal grammar or spelling pet peeve?

Should OF instead of should've
Could OF instead of could've
Would OF instead of would've

Those three drive me nuts maybe because the nuns beat it in to me.

(No, I am not kidding.)

Another one is "Nip it in the butt."

Ok, 'nip it in the butt' make me :rotfl:

1) Double negatives such as "Ain't got no...." :headache:
2) Axe instead of ask
3) brought instead of bought
4) irregardless instead of regardless (Do people not realize when they say this they are saying without regard without?)
5) was when used in sentences such as "we was up the street...."

I could probably think of many more if I continued to sit here. I also grew up with the grammar police. I have become the same type of parent:rolleyes1 . The other day I was asked at a parent-teacher conference if I could "Please ask Abigail not to correct the other children in class." Abby is in second grade I guess it is a strong gene:rotfl2: .

When someone says 'I should have WENT' instead of GONE.

Shelby

I doubt you get this in the US but in the UK some people put a k on the end of words, esp when they talk, such as somethink instead of something. :scared1:

When people say guesstimate. Seriously, it's not a word people!

Number one spelling mistake is ridiculous.

I hate seeing rediculous. Argh! Makes me crazy....but I always bite my tongue! LOL

The "of"s get me.

The whole "their", "they're", "there" thing makes nuts.

Never really thought about misuse of an apostrophe.

Their, they're and your, you're are biggies for me.

Alot being used instead of a lot.

Spelling? I have learned spell check is my friend, if I'm not sure I will do a spell check. Now, if I could just get someone to do a typing check I would be all set. I tend to reverse letters when typing and I even drive myself crazy with it.

What about nite=night site=sight thru=through

Are these acceptable now? Site+sight are not interchangable and is "nite" a real word?

When people here on the DIS write "loosing" instead of "losing". UGH!

I hate it when people use mischievious (miss-chee-vee-us). There is no such word. The word is mischievous.

advice vs advise

"a lot" is two words not one word (alot)

People who don't use periods at the end of their sentences, but type on the boards with a bunch of ellipses (........). Maybe they don't know when a sentence ends and therefore, cover that up by using ....... instead.

your/you're :headache:

As in: "Your not going to believe this!" Or "Your great!" I'm always thinking "Your great WHAT!"
There are others that bother me but that one is the most annoying to me.

::yes:: I see that one misspelled so often that I started to doubt my own memory and actually looked it up once to make sure I was right! :lmao:

The misspelling of the word ludicrous bugs me, too. Ludacris is a rap singer. :rotfl:

I admit it though, I am guilty of confusion over affect/effect. I can look it up, understand it, use it correctly, and then completely forget the next time I need to use it. :confused3 I don't know why.

Here's another weird thing I do accidentally. For some reason, whenever I type the word "plus", my fingers type an "h" on the end, "plush". I know it's supposed to be plus, I don't mean to hit that h, but I do. I think I usually catch it and fix it, but you may see that from me sometimes. I know the right word, really I do, I don't know why my fingers type it wrong all they time. :confused3

That's my pet peeve too, lose vs loose. "I'm worried I will loose my reservation". :confused3

It's not just on the DIS, I've seen it professionally too.

I see a lot of examples on here that I agree with:

1.) Errant apostrophes

2.) Lack of paragraphs. I actually quoted somebody's post and put it in paragraph form because it was so hard to read.

3.) Capitalizing every single letter in a post.

4.) As another poster said, "custesie" words. It's pregnant, not preggers. I'm not sure what a Ressie is, but it reminds me of an Aussie.

5.) The myriad of abbreviations. I don't understand how hard it is to write out daughter, brother, boyfriend, etc. At least those are fairly easy. When people try to say "dear niece" or "dear nephew" it's like we are supposed to magically divine wich one it is. I think OMG is the worst. I actually had a student who used it in her speech and it was like nails on a chalkboard.

I also still have trouble with affect/effect; I can't tell you how often I've visited Google about those words at work to be sure I'm using the correct one. I also have sensory trouble with my fingers, so it is easy for me to make typing errors.

Since I am confessing some of my writing weaknesses, I will tell you that I am not a great speller, either. I do use spell checker when typing at work or creating important letters at home, but I don't always do so on message boards. I also tend to use long sentences and a lot of commas.

I try not to be judgmental about such issues on the message boards since I am far from perfect, but I will admit that phrases like "I seen it at the store..." do sometimes seem like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Edited to add: Sorry Eeyores Butterfly - I didn't see your "nails on a chalkboard" statement until after I had posted!
