What's your personal grammar or spelling pet peeve?

but I will admit that phrases like "I seen it at the store..."

I cannot stand when people say that "they seen it." Double negatives and using the word AINT really bother me too! ;) My father had me convinced that you even sound uneducated when you use the word GOT. He said it was a lazy word and there are many other words to replace it... "I received a gift", instead of "I got a gift." I used to always try to stump him with the word got, but he always had another way of wording the sentence to omit it.

I also run into a ton of people who can't seem to spell the word tomorrow. :confused3

And my new pet peeve is "I know right?!" Where on earth did that come from and why?

For some reason, that made me laugh.:confused3 This thread is acually pretty entertaining.

And I don't get the whole lay/lie thing..... I never know what to use :headache:

What the heck is a "verbage"?

I also still have trouble with affect/effect; I can't tell you how often I've visited Google about those words at work to be sure I'm using the correct one. I also have sensory trouble with my fingers, so it is easy for me to make typing errors.

Since I am confessing some of my writing weaknesses, I will tell you that I am not a great speller, either. I do use spell checker when typing at work or creating important letters at home, but I don't always do so on message boards. I also tend to use long sentences and a lot of commas.

I try not to be judgmental about such issues on the message boards since I am far from perfect, but I will admit that phrases like "I seen it at the store..." do sometimes seem like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Edited to add: Sorry Eeyores Butterfly - I didn't see your "nails on a chalkboard" statement until after I had posted!

Hey, you spelled judgmental right... that's all that matters!

To clear up the affect/effect confusion:

Effect is a noun. Like the Butterfly Effect. Or what effect does it have on you?

Affect is a verb. How does it affect you? I was affected by it.

I really don't have a grammar or spelling pet peeve.

I guess if I had to pick a pet peeve, I would say it is the spelling/grammar police. ::cop:

:rotfl: Yeah, I agree. While grammar errors, typos, and other things annoy me, I don't call people out on them - especially here. This is a message board; it's casual. I am a teacher so I spend enough time correcting language at work.

Should OF instead of should've
Could OF instead of could've
Would OF instead of would've
Yes! That drives me crazy. It's like they take the contraction should've/could've/would've and spell it out phonetically.

The whole "their", "they're", "there" thing makes nuts.

Never really thought about misuse of an apostrophe.

That one and the common "than" vs. "then" where people constantly screw up and use "then" where they should be using "than".

For example: You are not smarter then somebody. You are smarter THAN somebody. Moe's does not have better burritos then Chipotle, Moe's has better burritos THAN Chipotle. If you can't figure that out THEN stop typing and go back to elementary school, learn basic grammar and spelling, and THEN come back and resume typing. We might THEN be less annoyed THAN we are now.
:thumbsup2

:goodvibes I read your post, then looked at the poster and thought "No wonder we have trouble with the same words!" ;)

Thank you. I will now repeat this to myself 100 times, but I will still likely forget it by tomorrow morning! :confused3 ;) :sad2:

Supposedly....NOT Supposably NOT Supposively SupposEDly!!!!!

Supposedly....NOT Supposably NOT Supposively SupposEDly!!!!!
When my mom's cousin was visiting her and her husband kept saying "supposably" a lot. Every chance I got I worked that word into the conversation just so I could say it correctly in front of them.

When people use I seen....

Or waiting ON line. You are in a line not on it.

I'm an English teacher. Every grammar error mentioned in this thread bothers me. As a teacher, it irritates me when a student uses the wrong word, and when I mention it, he/she says, "But the computer said it was right!" Sorry, kiddo. The computer is not always right!

I try not to let errors online bother me, but run-on sentences irk me. It's hard to figure out what someone means when all the ideas are jumbled together.

when my DS's teacher had the word "hampster" on the board for a week, it was killing me not to say anything...........but I didn't want to be rude!!

1. Omitting the -ed on a word that needs it
He is bias. (He is biased!)
She is prejudice. (She is prejudiced!)

2. Common misspelling - withdrawl (should be withdrawal)

3. The expression "my bad". Where in the world did that come from? "Bad" is an adjective, not a noun. It's like saying "my green" or "my lucky".

At the risk of complicating matters, "effect" can also be a verb meaning "to bring about". Appropriate discipline will hopefully effect a change in behavior.

Sorry if I just muddied the waters again. :rolleyes1

People who belittle those that have a difficult time with spelling.

Mine is probably when "your" is used instead of You're. You're welcome!
