What to do about height?

It's not that we think the rules don't apply to us. They apply to everybody. Our household just happens to be a rule breaking family. We choose to break rules that apply to us. Please see the list below for other rules that we have broken.

Broken Rules List

1. We have raised our arms in delight while on various Disney roller coasters, even though we were informed to keep our arms in the vehicle.

2. When asked to turn my cell phone off, I don't. I simply switch it to the silent mode.

3. My son and I have split various snacks that we have purchased with the dining plan, even though it specifically states that snack credits are "one person servings".

4. While on Mission Space, and being the commander, I did not push the required button when told to do so. This could have had a disastrous effect on the entire Mars mission.

5. I have ridden on the resort monorail loop while not staying at a monorail resort, even though the sign states that it is for guests at the monorail resorts.

Please understand that this is not an all inclusive list of the many rules that have been broken by our family. I won't mention the resort mug crimes that are committed by our family, for fear of going to Disney jail.

While I think you are incredibly funny, there are others out there who take these things oh-so-seriously and would have you banned for life from the Dis and WDW if they could. Sad, isn't it? I bet you pool hop too?

We got back two weeks ago from a week at WDW. DD4 was borderline on the 40" (we knew from measurements at doctors and a measure at home). They only checked her height twice. Once for Kali River Rapids (she meet the 38" requirement) and once for Soaring (with shoes on the bar was hitting her eyes). She road Splash mountain (first ride there) they didn't check, she rode BTMRR, they didn't check, she rode test track - they didn't check. I honestly think it depends on the CM at the entrance.

On note on TT, if your child rides it sit them on the outside with the crossover seat belt rather than the middle with just the lap belt. DD sat in the center and was jolted around a lot.

How dare you suggest pool hopping. I would never! Rules are not to be broken!! I will be sure to visit the judges tent in Toontown and personally report you to Mickey Mouse.

With all this talk about early morning and spines being longer then, I was thinking... why not have her get spinal surgery and have an extra vertebrae placed in her spine. There's your 1 1/2 inches. Problem solved.

My DD is 5 yrs old and only 38 1/2 inches tall. She really wants to ride Splash Mountain, but the height requirement is 40 inches. I am hoping she can grow 1 1/2 inches by March, but she is gonna be a kind of on the short side. Does anyone have any ideas? She reaallyy wants to ride and I figured, last year she could grow 2 inches in a year, so I told her she could ride this year. But, boy, I am not feeling good about it.

Two years ago my 5 year old wanted to ride RnRRC and she was not tall enough. Her mom and big sister went on and I stayed outside with her. She was crying, but not angry just sad. So the cast member came over to ask her why she was crying in Disney ( since there is no crying in Disney) and she explained. So the cast member came back with a card, and gave her to her, the card said that next time she came back and was told enough she and her whole family could go up to the front of the line, and she would be sort of like the leader. Needless to say that made her super happy and we had ice cream while we waited for mom.

People ask me why I go to Disney so often. This is exactly why.

Thanks. My DW told me I was doing the wrong thing, but hey, I only want what's best for my child. And you know the Dr. said I shouldn't sprinkle the "Pixie Dust" she got at Disney on it, but he doesn't know what he is talking about. A little infection never hurt anyone.

One other suggestion - I think I heard somewhere that Disney has either a baby swap or child swap for some of the attractions that have height restrictions. Perhaps you could just swap out your child for a taller one.

I can empathize. My son wanted to ride Test Track when he was almost 4.5 years old. Even with his shoes, he was not tall enough. So he had to wait until our next vacation and he was almost 5. That drove him nuts. We explained to him about the importance of the height restrictions and told him that most children his age can't ride it anyways . This worked out fine because he didn't see any children walking in at the time. But he was still upset.

Years later, I thought he would be upset when his almost 4 year old sister rode it for the first time. But he wasn't. He told her that she was so lucky that she was able to ride it.

This is a fabulous story and part of what makes Disney special. What a great way to handle that situation.

My daughter is 47.5 inches at 7 years old. She is a ride junkie and desperately wants to go on RnRC. I have told her that she may not be tall enough to go and while she is cranky, she accepts it. I would just be upfront with her and tell her she may just not be tall enough. If she is then it will be a happy surprise!

My oldest will be 10 in Feb and my youngest is 8 and they both finally reached 48 inches for our last trip. Every time we have gone we looked forward to going on something new that they have finally reached the height for. This time is was RNR and Primevil Whirl. It was worth the wait. There were times when they desperately wanted to go on something, but weren't tall enough. They were sad, but my answer would be that it was just another reason for us to go back the next year. They got over it and we just done all the other great things that we also looked forward to doing.
I especially wouldn't do it on Splash Mountain. There is nothing holding you in. I still wrap my arms around my daughters when we go down the hill. It does scare me of the possibility that they could fall out.

She might be taller by then-it is possible. Or, you could be a rule breaker by letting her wear taller shoes. I MIGHT have done that...I'm not talking lifts like Tom Cruise wears just shoes that I knew were higher than, say, flip flops or something.

I absolutely love your list of "broken" rules at Disney. I'm sure we'd all get a stern lecture from the Mouse himself for some of the stuff we may have done.

That being said, I can't condone anyone trying to circumvent the height restrictions. Pool hopping, or refilling an old mug won't result in someone getting seriously injured.

Disney has had a bad enough year for tragedies, as is, and I would hate for the Orlando Sentinel to suddenly be able to report about a child's death occurring because some CM"s were letting people slide through on the height restrictions. Talk about a nightmare situation for WDW. Let's all try and be safe for our sakes, our kids' sakes, and for the good of the Resort!

I have also read on here that you should try early in the day, because typically us humans stand up taller earlier in the day and not after a whole day of walking around Disney World. And have her practice at home standing up tall and just be honest with her and if she doesn't grow, find something new that she has never done before. And make that special for her.

That said... my DD was 40" at 4yo... she should be about 42" now last we checked.. i know my DS1.5 is now 33" so if his growth continues, he should be 40" by 3 (he's grown over a foot in a yr).

I believe my DD can now ride ToT, and i've been debating taking her. i think I might take her my next trip as DW won't be there and less chance i have to hear her opinion and why I shouldn't...

I tell my DD she needs to eat so she can get bigger and taller so I can have my Roller Coaster partner. If she doesn't want to be my RCP, then DS will be my new RCP... that sometimes works..

We went when my son was 5 and he missed the height requirements by 1/2 inch and could not go on a few rides. There was so much else to do that it didn't really matter.

I had the same problem with my DD when we went she was just 40 inches but on some the the rides she measured just under. It was a pain she was 5 1/2. i know its for safety but its heart breaking, to have to explain to a child that they are just to short. we found that early in the day she got on more rides. they say you are taller in the morning I don't know how true it is, and a nice thick pair of sneakers won't hurt either just sit next to them if you can.

Op, there is hope. My DD had just turned 5 when we went last Nov. and was 40" without shoes. She is now 45" without shoes. Yes, she grew 5 inces in a year!!! We went form a 4T to a 6/6x and from a 8.5-11.5 in shoes!!!

All I can say is wow. And I was surprised when my DS went from 24 mo jeans in January to 3T in March and 4/4T this fall. I just happy that his feet have slowed down. He was changing about half a size every 2 months.

So to the OP, there might still be hope. And especially since it sounds like the 40 inches is with shoes on, so if her 38.5 was w/o shoes, then growing 1 inch should be easier.
