What Not To Wear - I'm disgusted

Her hair was looonggggg really long, no shape and unhealthy, poor Nick we even showed her a tape of other women and their fear for the clippers, and how good and happy they were after he cut it. But Nooooo she was too good for that, she put it back on a granny bun.

I have long hair and keep it in long layers with bangs - and I still have many options for styling. I think the layers even give me MORE options - it looks great when I curl it.

I have a serious question - is there a religious reason why a female would not cut their hair? Off the top of my head I can't think of any...

The fact you are unaware of a reason does not mean the reason does not exsist. Why do people want to attack those who take a stand on an issue that affects no one but the person who makes the decision?? Maybe the reasons are not based on "religion", but more on the person's personal relationship with God! Many faiths of the world view uncut hair as a virtue for women and a blessing from God. This concept of uncut hair is not the same as "long" hair. Uncut hair can be any length: those who have lived with this belief all their lives will have very long hair and those who are new to the belief may have hair so short you can't even comb it. In the eyes of their God it is all uncut!!

Many women give more credence to the teachings of their God than the nit-picking of the popular culture. Women seem to be so harsh to each other for sticking up for what they believe, but those same women get snippy if you question something they believe in. You must be willing to tolerate the views of others if you want others to tolerate you! IMHO :thumbsup2

EXACTLY ::yes::

You can have all the beliefs you want... just don't go and nominate yourself to be on a show that is obviously about CHANGING that! It looked like she USED her long hair to get on the show in the FIRST PLACE! UGH. :crazy2:

apostolic4life - I do not see where diznygirl was attacking anyone. :confused3 The person on the show made a comment. Diznygirl just asked a question about the comment. I would like to know the answer to the question too. I have never heard of a religious sect that prevents a female from cutting her hair. Does that mean that there isn't one? NO - it just means I (& diznygirl) personnally do not know of a reason but if someone would like to educate us without bashing us it would be appreciated. I see nothing to indicate intolerance - I just see people who are trying to understand someone elses point of view.

Wow, never thought anything I posted would solicit the vulgar reply you posted. I wonder why so many have gotten so angry because a woman chose to stand up for her beliefs???

I believe if the woman knew what the premise of the show was, she should not have nominated herself for it. That said, the fact is she was still invited, and from everything I have read here, most of you would have jumped on this opportunity in a heartbeat: can we fault her for also wanting a new wardrobe just like many of you??

Just a little nugget to think about........not looking for flames, but I am sure I will get them. :thumbsup2

Forgive my poor choice of wording: I was not trying to imply or point a finger in diznydirl's direction, but simply trying to make a gerneral statement of tolerance.

Again, I apologize for the bad thought organization. I do have answers to some of those questions you are asking, but I am not sure this thread is the place for me to expound on what we tend to call religion. I follow a faith (a walk with God) and I do not refer to what I have with God a religion. At one time I was very religious: I lifted weights 6 hours a day 6 days a week for many years. This I did religiously (many things can be religious, but a walk with God is a very specific thing)
I would be more than happy to discuss this with you at length, but I am not looking to get pounded by the masses here on this thread. :thumbsup2

DH and I were discussing this after watching in disbelief over the hair! We came to the conclusion that maybe this woman wanted to get on the show to get the new wardrobe, not a makeover. The show said she was going back to school and interviewing and because she was a nanny, she only had casual clothes. If she had truly wanted a makeover, she would have let Nick at least trim her hair and be more open to Carmindy's makeup. She said right before the makeup session something along the lines of, she'd let her do whatever with makeup but she didn't wear makeup and wouldn't afterwards either. What I also found annoying was that Stacy and Clinton didn't say a peep about her not cutting her hair in the end.

I was frustrated too when she wouldn't even consider letting Nick at least get rid of the dead stuff to make it look healthy.

I do know of women who, as part of their belief system, do not cut their hair. But I'm not sure if it restricts the type of care & upkeep that most of us would consider necessary maintenance.

What I'm wondering is if they suggested donating to Locks of Love? Getting seriously long hair cut is traumatic enough, but knowing it would be going to a good cause would help ease the pain for me. Of course, if her hair wasn't healthy enough, that may not have been an option.

She doesn't want to have her hair cut? Fine. The reason doesn't matter.
If she had no intention of allowing them to cut it, she shouldn't have used it as reason that they should pick her for the makeover. When she took her hair down in the booth and displayed the long locks to the camera during the her audition, the implication is that she believes that her hair is at least part of the reason she needs a makeover. It appears that she pulled one over on the producers of the show.

She definitely should have let Nick cut her hair. He was willing to leave it long and he would have made it look 1,000% better. I've never seen him mess up anyone's hair.

I thought she was being difficult. Maybe she nominated herself on a lark, never expected to be picked.

That's a great suggestion. I wonder what her reaction would have been to that. I think that is such a great organization.

I appologize, I guess I did not see a few #$@# signs as vulgar (because you can insert your own words there ;) ) but honestly I am sorry if that offended anyone truely...
and if infact she wanted only a new wardrobe she should not have shown her super long hair in the 360 mirror and made a big deal out of it, as though she wanted a change...that is what I got out of the show. Her beliefs were also against makeup but we see that she does infact allow her "view" on that to be changed and morphed...

and the eyebrow clipping was desperately needed too!! Sorry but seriously...

my point is, if her views are sooo strong and they are her solid ground...then why did she allow her self to be cast into the shame of wearing eyeliner and mascara??

wanting a new wardrobe and nomintating yourself for a complete makeover show are two very different things and that is what the viewers seem to be upset about...it is after all entertainment right?? The big reveal was a flop...hair and all IMO...

First, I do not know how she presented herself in the "audition." I do not watch or even own a television so I have not seen this ladies overall personality or lack thereof.

I agree with you on the point of using the hair to get on the show, but maybe she was hoping the professional could teach her how to manage the hair without cutting it. I work as a professional chef; many times people have asked me to make adjustments to my methods of preperation, cooking or ingredients for health, religious or personal requirements. I find a way to do this so they can share in the experience without compromise on their part. If you are a professional, you should be able to adapt to any situation. :thumbsup2

I have to agree, compromise on one belief would lead a person to believe she may not hold any of those beliefs as solidly as she wanted to portray.

I wonder if she looks back now and regrets her choices concerning the make-up? :scratchin

If you have strong beliefs and choose to compromise on them in any way, you need to be willing to accept the possible backlash as this thread seems to be a prime example of. :thumbsup2

Got on this thread late. Thanks for the heads-up. I've got about two weeks worth of WNTW tivo'd, I'll skip this episode. I enjoy the episodes when women are able (by the end of the episode) to see themselves through more objective eyes but this just sounds like a woman wanting to take advantage of the producers to get a new wardrobe.

As for any comparisons between the BBC & TLC versions, I agree with one poster who said the great thing about Trinny & Susan is that they don't have great bodies and they're very up front about that. The thing that I really like about TLC's version (besides the chemistry between Stacy & Clinton which I just LOVE) is the fact that Carmandy (sp?) & Nick actually talk and you learn something about hair and makeup as well (not that I can apply it as a 47-year-old balding man :p ) but the draw for me is to see these people transform their looks with something as simple as clothing.

ummm...how can you comment on this TV show if you've never seen it? So I'll explain: the whole point of the furor is that this woman used her long hair in the plea to be on the show - to get a makeover and $5000 worth of new clothes. She duped the producers into choosing her. They must have salivated at the thought of trimming all that hair! I have no problem with her holding onto her personal beliefs - but she shouldn't have lied to get on the show - I believe that she took the new clothes under false pretenses.

She may very well have asked Nick about that but it was never shown so we (the viewers) can only comment can only comment on what we were shown. It could have been that the editors cut that out to make her seem more determined. But it seems to me from her attitude and things that she said even before going to see Nick, she was very resolute about not cutting her hair.

Given the length of her hair, I'm not too sure there was much that Nick could have done with it besides a bun. There was just too much hair and it looked like it would have been too heavy to style.
