I just don't get the original Mario Bros. games on the SNES. Never clicked. I like the 3D games like the ones on the N64, but the 2D platformers? Nah, don't get them.
Conversely, I like the 2D Genesis Sonic games more than I do the 3D fodder on Dreamcast and onwards. I still like the 3D games, I think that they've made a good go of it, but the 2D Sonic games are just better.
Oh man, you and I are gamer bros., but that's blasphemy! Super Mario Bros. is an exceptional game, and Super Mario Bros. 3 is a masterpiece - a top 5 all-timer for sure (and SMB2 is no slouch, just not quite there). Super Mario World is a killer too, no doubt. SMB laid the foundation for everything video games would become - it is possibly the most important game ever created (though a few others could be in the running for sure).
Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World are top 5 for me. I loved SNES console the best and still play it sometimes. I definitely prefer 2D scrollers over everything, besides Mario Kart. My other favorite SNES games were Donkey Kong Country and Bubsy.

Don't get me wrong, 2D games were superior to most 3D games as in that they were more about the gameplay and less about the graphics, like Pong or Break Out. But Mario? I just never got it.
Shenmue is pretty high on that list. I mean, great game and all, but number one? I can't see that. SMB for sure, but where is Pac-Man or maybe Space Invaders - talk about influential! Even Donkey Kong should be considered. Doom definitely brought FPS to the forefront (though Wolfenstein 3D came first).Ocarina is legendary, though it doesn't really do much that 2D Zelda wasn't doing - I might put Super Mario 64 above it as the breakthrough 3D style game. Tetris has probably got to be on that list too.Street Fighter II? Also, I kinda hate to say it, but maybe Fortnite or Minecraft as far as being influential (may they one day be long forgotten! ). Halo? Call of Duty?
Okay, okay, man, It's hard when there are so many great and influential games - but, I mean, SMB saved gaming. It's also a masterclass in game design. Ever see how 1-1 was designed? It teaches you everything you need to know about playing the game. Goomba - kills you. Mushroom - power up. Jump over this gap - but there's a floor. Next one - no floor. It goes on like that. It's like the first in-game tutorial, but you'd never even know it. I was there. That demo I played of SMB at a Sears - mind blowing! It outclassed everything that came before it. I might not have even been able to tell you why at the time, but I can tell you now. It was Genius on display - Shigeru Miyamoto, but also composer Koji Kondo. Putting them together is like when George Lucas and Johnny Williams sat down for a little space movie.... Everyone else was on notice.
