What does Curves cost?

Well, I was able to get in on an introductory offer. So my "initiation fee" (the yearly fee) was only $49. But I think it is something like $135 per year. Then it is $39 a month if you pay monthly or $29 a month if you let them take it directly from your checking account each month.

But, yours may vary. I have heard it as high as $49 a month.

I am really loving Curves! Let us know how you do:)

GET OUT!! I thought that was a one time "set up" fee!!

I hope someone clarifies this! Is it yearly or one time??

I could be wrong!!!

If someone else can comment I would appreciate it. Or, I could just ask tomorrow LOL

Your official Curves employee checking in...

The initiation fee is a one-time thing, unless you quit Curves and want to rejoin. You sign up for a year's commitment, but your membership lasts until you tell them otherwise.

The "regular" initiation fee is $149, but there are often promotions going on, so keep your eyes open.

The monthly fee is $39 if you want to go month-to-month, but only $29 if you have them deduct it directly from your bank account. If you do the check draft, you are also allowed to get a travel pass to visit other Curves locations; on a month-to-month you don't get that privilege. This is supposed to be the same everywhere, since your membership can be transferred to another location if you move, or a Curves opens up closer to you.

Now, having said all that, Curves is a franchise. Some franchise owners take things into their own hands and may do things differently. They're not SUPPOSED to, but....

Mine was $59 for the one time fee and I do the $29 monthly draft so I can get travel passes to go with my mother-in-law to hers!
Its really great!

Thank you Disneyaholic! Whew!

I'd really like a Curves like my friend has across town (apparently it's the only one who does this)
They can purchase a key card for $25 a year, but then they have access to the place 24/7 and can bring children. There are so many days I can't go b/c of dh's work schedule and the kids are too young to leave alone.
I hear that's an oddity in the Curves world though!

With the family history of heart disease that's I've inherited and my somewhat sedentary lifestyle, I've decided that $29 a month is still cheaper than:
cholesterol medications, a heart cath, angioplasty and cardiac bypass. It also turns out cheaper than a funeral! :)

So I'm going to keep at it!
My kids are at grandma and grandpas this week, so I'm getting ready to hit Curves for the FIFTH time this week! Wooo, I feel good!

Thanks everyone. I'm off next week, so I'm going to check it out. One more question...do you have to weigh and be measured there? I prefer to weigh in private...I have a complex, I guess. :)

Thank you Disneyaholic for the info. I think I had brain freeze when I was writing.

I was not aware of the travel pass only on the check draft "program". It was not presented to me in that way.

Always great to have someone on the inside :)

Addicted: I am not sure. But the scale at my curves has the backside of the scale covered so that you are the only one that can see the actual weight on it. And when I was measured we were in a private office area.

Now that would be awesome! I have a hard time getting down there on Tues and Thurs b/c of classes.

I paid $74 for the one time registration and $29 monthly.

Regarding the monthly fee - it depends on where you are. I happen to live in Maryland (outside of DC), and my monthly rate options were $39/mo if automatic payment and 1 yr commitment or $49/mo without the year commitment. I joined during the Grand Opening week, so I got the $49 initiation fee (instead of $124).

I love it, and very glad I joined!

Monica...small world. I'm in Silver Spring, work in Rockville, and am considering the Gaithersburg location. I figured it would be pricier here...it seems that everything else is!

Regarding measurements/weight...

I was one who never liked taking my measurements. When I signed up at Curves, I told the person who measured me that I didn't want to know the "numbers".

But I am very glad that I did get measured when I started and continue to get measured each month. Being able to see how many pounds and inches I have lost is a GREAT motivator.

Each month, when I get weighed and measured, they print out two reports for me. One shows the change from the previous month and one shows the change from when I started at Curves. I still don't really look at the numbers per se, but I do look at the changes and they are something that I never thought I would see.

The Curves employee who weighs and measures you will be very discreet. If you ask her to not print the report, but only give you a synopsis of your losses, I'm sure she'll do that.

Please consider getting weighed and measured -- in the long run, I think you will be glad you did. ;)

I lucked out! I just happened to go into my nearby Curves last October, just to check it out. They were having a special for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and if you had recently (or were having soon) a mammogram, they would waive the start-up fee! Well, I was due anyway (okay, overdue:rolleyes: ), so I had it a few days later and started Curves for free!:) I do the monthly check draft also and it is $29 plus tax.

A couple of months ago, my DD-11 decided to join also! I had to pay a start-up fee of about $70-something for her. But, her monthly fee is only $10 plus tax! She's been going by herself since early May when I broke my rib, though. Well, I go along and sit and read a book! But, my rib is better now and I'm starting back on Monday!!:Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

If you don't want to be weighed or measured, you don't have to. It's not a requirement (at least it certainly isn't at the two different Curves franchises that are near my home). But I also encourage you to do it anyway - it really is a great motivator and the scale is in a reasonably private location. FWIW, no one seems to look at you or care, anyway. The Curves employees have worked with lots and lots of women who are sensitive about their weight and shape.

You will notbe the only person there who isn't in swim-suit ready shape, LOL! :teeth: :teeth:

Seriously, one of the things I really, really like about Curves is that it brings in all shapes and sizes and ages and is for women only! No one dresses in fancy exercise clothes - just sweats or shorts and a t-shirt! I always felt out of place at gyms or other exercise places, but not at Curves. I can chat or not as the day moves me. Everyone seems to be very friendly. I see lots of smiles.

Try not to worry about what others may think of your weight right now. Think about how much better you will feel and look if you can exercise regularly. I just know you will find kindred spirits at your local Curves - I sure did!

Best wishes!

Jen,

Which location are you thinking of in Gaithersburg? The one I'm going to right now is at Darnestown and Quince Orchard (they have been open now for 3 weeks).

There is another one about to open up on the 7th of July (so, should have signon specials) off of Lost Knife (across from Lake Forest Mall, near Safeway). I will be transfering over to that one, once it's opened. I go M/W/F after work (around 6is) - if you end up going to look, or joining PM me, and maybe we can met.

Have a great day!

A new location just opened in my area this week (Brentwood (Pittsburgh) PA). A coworker planned to joined and talked me into going too. They had a "special" on the initiation fee - $49 instead of $149. Then $29 per month out of my checking account with a year contract. They did not mention the $39 month by month. They did weigh & measure me out in the open, I didn't have a problem with that. I did my first workout last night. I thought it went pretty well, the time passed quick. I went around 4:00pm and there were 2 other women there plus my friend. I am a little sore today but not bad. I figured last night would be good since I don't go to work today in case I was sore. Going back Monday, will try 3 times a week. Our location is not open on Saturday, they hope they will once they build up their customer base. They also hope to add machines, there are 8 now. One that another coworker has gone to for some time has 12.

Still going to WW, I'm hoping I will get my motivation back, I keep gaining & losing the same 5 pounds!

DebbieB,
A Curves opened by me in April. By mid-may they had added a machine. Also by mid-May they extended their hours in the mornings. And by the beginning of June they had added Saturday hours. As it grows things will expand.

I wish now that they were open at 7:00 every day! :) That way I could get in and out before dh has to go to work!

Curves locations begin with 8 machines. As they add to their customer base, they add machines, to a total of 12 different ones.

I have heard that some of the larger locations (both space- and customer base-wise) add on duplicates of some of the machines -- like the glute machine -- so you can get your full 30 seconds on each leg, instead of having to switch halfway through, or the oblique machine, so you can work both sides evenly.

I understand that there is a Curves not too far from here that has doubles of everything -- two separate circuits, because they have the customer base to support it!

Why oh why did DH not listen to me a year ago when I told him we should invest in a Curves franchise????
