what do you do w/the dyed eggs?

When I was younger, we always dyed eggs for fun together. They were never hidden...we just ate them!

Dyed eggs stay in the fridge. I hid fake plastic ones when the kids were little. Put candy or money inside them. I was afraid to hide real ones...what if we missed one? Can you imagine the smell of a rotten egg a few weeks later?

We dye our real eggs and the EB hides them inside the house that night. (They remain out of the fridge all night.) Before he leaves, he hides the plastic eggs outside and puts the baskets on the hearth.

He used to put candy in the plastic eggs outdoors, but not anymore. Now it's just coins. We had to switch to money when we awoke one morning to find all our outdoor eggs were pilfered by hungry critters. Every egg was opened and the candy was gone! A few wrappers were left, but not many.

I bet those squirrels, chipmunks, ground hogs, or whatever they were had some pretty bad tummy aches.

Ok, so I really feel like the oddball here. As a kid and still to this day with my kids we dye raw eggs. Yes I said raw eggs. No one is my family eats hard boiled eggs. We dye them raw and just put them back in the refridgerator. The next time you make breakfast for your kids, they get to pick which color they want. Now has anybody else ever done this or is it just us?

I like the idea, but it has never failed yet, of about half the eggs we are dyeing to get dropped at some point.

Maybe I'll boil a dozen for hiding and try a dozen of non-boiled ones. Thanks for the idea! :thumbsup2

We dye real eggs together on Saturday night and we leave them out on the table in the easter basket. We leave a carrot beside the basket.

The Easter Bunny comes in the night and takes the eggs to hide, leaving goodies in the basket in their place.

Then, we hunt for the real eggs. Sometimes we throw in a plastic egg with something inside as a special surprise, but mostly we hunt the real eggs. We don't eat them, just hunt them and keep them in the basket for decoration that day, and then throw them out.

Evil Queen we do without fail always drop one or two eggs. Not too bad since we dye three dozen. Each child gets his own dozen to dye. Give it a try.

Our bunny hides the tiny foil covered chocolate eggs around the house.

The kids and I dye hard boiled eggs, that we specialize for family members (to get rid of some, LOL) and keep some in the house to eat...egg salad, deviled eggs, etc...

We dyed ours last Sunday and will probably end up throwing them away. DH is the only one who eats them, and sometimes I will make deviled eggs for him.

I don't think I cooked mine long enough this year, though. :crazy2:

I think I will. We normally do 2 dozen anyways, so we can do half and half. Plus, we can work on those while the boiled ones cool, my DS10 doesn't have much patience for waiting on the cooling part. And this way I can probably use them all, without wasting anything.

One year we did a savanger egg hunt. Inside the plastic eggs were clues to the next egg. We have done this inside and outside (needless to say my youngest loved the clue that lead to the one on the tank of the toilet, behind some knick knacks). The year we did the outdoor savanger hunt, it led to a bike. He loved the bike, but loved the clues and finding the next egg better.

In my husband's family, eggs are dyed and used for "knocking". Believe it or not, there is actually an egg knocking festival on Easter day in his home town where people actually bet on whose egg will be the strongest. These people are really fanatical about this. We dye a bunch of eggs to knock with the family. My daughter is two this year and her dad has been practicing knocking eggs with her with the plastic eggs to get ready for the big day this weekend. We will dye about 5 dozen eggs (three dozen yard eggs since my husband says they'll be harder. :confused3 ) and they will compete with their eggs against other family member's eggs all day. Then, some of the brave souls will eat the cracked eggs that have been sitting out all day, but my husband, daughter and I will pass on that part.

Here is an article about the festivities. It's really quite amusing.

I actually write a list of where each one is hidden and once she finds all she can I count how many she has and then sneak a pek at the list and magically "help" her find the rest so none are missed!

We always dyed the eggs together, then the EB hid them overnight or in the morning. Or when we got older, the EB got lazy, and just started hiding them while we hid in the bathroom and didn't peek. :rotfl:

We always made deviled eggs out of the dyed eggs for Easter dinner. We ate/put the rest in the fridge. And we hid the real ones- no biggie, just count how many you had and how many the kids collect: no one gets to rest until every egg is accounted for!
