What are your drop dead issues?

The economy, healthcare, and getting out of Iraq

Considering where I live, THE BORDER WALL(pro/con? Immigration in general), followed by the war on terror.

Except for taxes, I don't have one. No matter where they stand on everything else, I'll vote for them if they let the American people keep the money they work for.

After taxes, I think they should just butt out of everything else. It's none of their business.

Fix the roads, protect the country and get the hell out of the way.

Cool-Beans, I've told you this before, but you're my hero! :worship:

Keeping religion out of government.
Keeping abortion and contraception safe, legal and available.
Ending the mess in Iraq and restoring some credibility to our reputation abroad.
Ending the death penalty.
Increased gun control.
Ending NCLB.

Well you can pretty much turn those all right around and you'll have mine. :)

There's a lot I feel strongly about, but just to name a few

Immigration (securing the borders)
abortion (prolife)
gun control (against)

War, Civils Rights (including gay marriage) and religion (I just can't vote for someone who is going to impose their beliefs on me).

Anyone who goes against the morals or values I hold is out. Of course that would be all of them...so then it has to be the one that goes against them the least. I also am considering their stance on health care (my Dad who is self employeed doesn't have coverage due to the high cost for him).

Healthcare - I'm uninsurable so this is very important to me.

Iraq- It's time to get out, if you can't understand that, I'm not voting for you.

Anyone who favors gay marriage or civil unions is completely out, even if they reduce my taxes to zero.

Healthcare would be a distant second, followed by Iraq.

They can't have the last name of Clinton or Bush either.

I spent a LOT of time thinking about this question yesterday. It's really hard for me to point to one or two issues because so much is interrelated. Health care is important to me, but that's tied to a concern for the poor and the middle class that I believe has been sorely lacking. I want to vote for someone who believes that we ALL matter, not just the folks with the big wallets. The war in Iraq is a very important issue for me and I cannot vote for someone who thinks everything is just dandy the way it's going. However, that is also tied to the larger issue of what America's role should be in foreign policy and how we protect ourselves against terrorism. Illegal immigration is wrong, but my focus is on punishing the people that hire illegals, not on the illegals who come looking for better jobs. As for the big social issues-I don't believe you can legislate abortion away. I want fewer abortions, heck I'd like no abortions, but making a law isn't going to stop it. Society's attitude has to change, medicine has to change and a law isn't going to do that. I want equal rights and opportunity for everyone, it's not just about gay marriage, it's about making sure that all Americans have the ability to live a healthy, happy life without the government getting in the way.

No. 1 issue for me is women's reproductive rights. I won't vote for anyone who doesn't say they'll protect them. It's a litmus test issue for me.

No. 2. Fixing the healthcare situation.

No. 3. Getting us out of Iraq.

No. 4. I want an adminstration who doesn't worship at the feet of corporate America, and actually holds businesses and their executives accountable for their actions.

No. 5. Dump or fix NCLB. It was a few good provisitions, but is actually an anchor dragging schools down in many cases.

Well put! :thumbsup2

There are other candidates to vote for other then republican and democrat. If I remember correctly there were 8 presidential candidates on the ballot last election.

I will give that, but in all honesty (and my opinion) they don't really count. Think about it, the way the US is set up it will come down to Democrat VS Republican. A simple two party system unless you want to add the Independents in, but in all actuality, Independent = oops, I didn't get my parties vote. You will not win if you put yourself under the Green Party or Libertarian Party or Constitution Party. And this goes beyond just the presidential elections but also into Congress and other governmental systems. The simple fact that we have such a large RANGE within each of the parties goes to show that there is room for branching off, but politicians won't until it's no longer a death sentence not to have the backing of the Democratic or Republican parties.

Now take a look at Sweden, Germany, and the UK... they have other parties... viable parties... with in their governing bodies. Sweden's Riksdag for example has a large showing from 7 different parties and a bunch of smaller ones. When one runs with a different party, besides the current ruling party, they actually have a chance instead of being laughed out of the race.

Usually, it comes down to picking the least worse of the two main parties. This isn't just my thinking, but many of those I have spoken to within my age group agree. It comes down to "Do I pick the person I really want, even though they have no chance in hades or do I vote against the person I like the least (and thus vote for the opposite of the two main parties)?" This is what happened in 2004 and will most likely what will happen with myself and my friends in 2008.

Sorry for the long post... it's just something I have recently come to see and worry about. Once again, this is only my opinion.

Read my mind, as usual.

My drop dead issues? The war, healthcare and women's issues. The rest I'll take care of in my own 4 walls.

Taxes big time. I don't feel the government needs more of my money I want to keep it and choose what I spend it on. I love when people complain about taxes yet keep voting in people that will do nothing but keep them high or raise them.

One thing I don't understand about the tax issue (and I'm not singling you out) is that we seem to accept that everything in this life costs more. Prices for everything continue to rise and rise. Nothing EVER goes down in cost, but somehow taxes are supposed to stay the same or even lessen. I don't get it. It sure would be nice, of course, but it doesn't make sense logically, at least to me.
