What are your drop dead issues?

Illegal immigration and abortion are my issues right now. And even though I'm a religious person, I don't necessarily want someone in office who will push their religious agenda.

My issues are the war, health care, the economy, and education (NCLB, universal preschool, and college tuition).

I don't understand why immigration is such a hot issue right now. We are getting more immigrants in our area, but probably not as much as other areas. I didn't get why gay marriage was such a big issue in '04 either.

My issues surround freedom:

I want to be able to do whatever I want with my body - it is mine!

I want a person to be able to do whatever they want in their bedroom - with whatever sex they want.

I want to not be eavesdropped on by my government without cause.

I want freedom of speech to not be restricted.

Anyone who favors gay marriage or civil unions is completely out, even if they reduce my taxes to zero.

Healthcare would be a distant second, followed by Iraq.
.

This is so interesting to me that may I politely ask why gay marriage is your number one issue?

I think many people link illegal immigration with other issues such as crime, health care, poverty and education. I certainly see it as a major problem.

1. the economy- jobs, trade, the deficit, stopping the erosion of the middle class
2. illegal immigration- which contributes to the erosion of the middle class
3. iraq
4. foreign relations, especially not letting China walk all over us

One thing I don't understand about the tax issue (and I'm not singling you out) is that we seem to accept that everything in this life costs more. Prices for everything continue to rise and rise. Nothing EVER goes down in cost, but somehow taxes are supposed to stay the same or even lessen. I don't get it. It sure would be nice, of course, but it doesn't make sense logically, at least to me.

Would you not agree that our govt. wastes a lot of money?

Well, that's a given, isn't it? It still doesn't answer my question. Simply cutting pork all by itself is not going to miraculously fill our coffers... or halt the cost of living. Not ALL spending bills contain nothing but frivilous projects. And considering the debt we are in at the moment, I really can't see how anybody can expect tax cuts, unless you simply want to hand over the keys to the country to China.

My issues are very similar to those already expressed:

1. pro choice
2. healthcare for all
3. stem cell research
4. economy
5. ending war in Iraq responsibly
6. restoring our reputation with the world community

There are a lot of things which really matter to me. The Iraq war, healthcare, the enviornment, personal freedom, education . . .

But hte two "deal breakers" which will keep me from even lookign at a candidate's views on anything else (partly because htese are cut and dry issues unliek the above) are:

*I will not consider a candidate who wants to over turn Roe vs. Wade

*I will not consider a candidate who would be in favour of banning gay mairrage or any other civil right simply because of who somebody loves.

robust national security policy (I include immigration reform under this umbrella)
free market principles
smaller government

The social/cultural issues, while I have strong opinons on some of them, don't make much of a difference to me in the voting booth.

Sound like my list.

Taxpayers aren't a finite or stagnant resource.

A very large number of people pay nothing. So their tax "cost" does stay the same. Year after year after year.

And obviously they aren't the ones complaining that's their number one issue, are they?

The question was to people who want their taxes reduced yet wish to keep the same level of services they have now. How can that be achieved (pork cuts notwithstanding) when the costs of those services continue to rise? As does our debt. And we are talking about the federal level here. What about state and local? Not as much pork to cut there. Are people okay with tax increases there or is it just the federal taxes they take umbridge with?
