What all to carry

LOL! And which pocket holds that smallish baby grand, YEKCIM? :rotfl:
that looks like the exact same vest I use, I actually have 3 of them...

if so, I'm guessing the smallish baby grand, fits neatly in the large pocket on the back of the vest

:lmao:

I like the look of those Crumpler bags! I just ordered a 4 million dollar bag for my trip! (shhh, no one tell my DH I bought more camera stuff- he's likely to swipe my credit cards if he find out :rotfl: ).

MIck: you took the words right out of my mouth.

At WDW, I'm known as "The Family Pack Mule".

I will not go anywhere without one of my vests...they are the best way to carry everything.

in February when I was at WDW with my sister and her family, we came out of the first ride, and she just stopped and looked realizing her stroller had been moved and was now parked with a hundred others that looked just like it, I reached into my vest and pulled out the 1/2 inch wide LIME GREEN shoelaces that I bought knowing that they would somehow come in handy.., I tied one around the handle of her stroller and for the rest of the trip we had no problems spotting the stroller in the crowd.., one more reason that the 20+ pockets come in handy...LOL

I'm the obsessive over-planner in my family. On our just completed WDW visit, I had *two* bandannas in one of my vest pockets. One is a bright yellow/orange, and the other bright red/white/blue. We used the latter to ID our "buggy" (YEKCIM-ette will NOT ride in a stroller <those are for babies, Dad>, but very willing to be chauffeured around the park in a "buggy"...) and cannot imagine trying to locate "our" WDW buggy, apart from the seas of identical conveyances parked at every attraction.

Like you, I find the vest to be the absolute best way to carry "stuff" in the parks. My only gripe is not being able to remember where that I put that last granola bar...I can FEEL it in there someplace, but can't find the right pocket!

I never put food in my vest, from fear of gettng my gear sticky...

LOL.... a few months ago I couldn't find my cell phone, so I called it from my house phone and waited to hear it ring...nothing ...so I called it again and went out to my car, sure enough I heard it ringing, it appeared to be under my vest I picked up the vest and the ringing was coming from inside the vest, so I searched every pocket....nothing, I took the vest in the house and called my cell phone again sure enough the ringing was coming from inside the vest, I located the phone but could not figure out how it got inside the lining of the vest, none of the pockets had holes...

eventually I discovered that somehow as I carried my vest, my phone popped out of my belt holster and went down in the vest in the back where the mesh is...it took a while to work it back up out of there...what are the odds

I'm not a dSLR-er (yet!) but used to shoot film SLR's. Plenty of room for extra lenses, film, batt's, and so on. Nowadays, I use a Fuji S5200. On our recent WDW visit, I carried it and my Canon camcorder, along with water bottle, snacks, park maps, monopod, extra batteries and media for both cam's, basic OTC med's, rain ponchos, and a smallish baby grand piano, all tucked neatly into the various pockets. Among the most useful of the pockets are three velcroed "mesh" pockets (above the zippered pocket on the left, in the pic above) in which I carried my park tix, room key card, memory cards, and lip balm.

I'm going in this direction. I checked out the web sites Mickey had provided a while back, but didn't get anything. I recently came across a safari vest in a cataloge for a very inexpensive price. Inexpensive enough to make a purchase under the CFO's (aka DW) radar screen so that I could try it out. I don't think it has as many pockets as this one, but I think its enough to get me by for the time being. I'll test it out, then if I feel I need to upgrade the vest I'll know more and wont be out much money (heck it was only $13 so I couldn't pass it up for a test run). It should be arriving within the next few days.

Only problem I see down the road for me with a vest is where to fit the 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom Lens. This thing is a monster at 8.5 inches in length and weighing in at 3lbs. Other wise everything else should fit great.

Kyle,

This one looks to be identical to the one I and Mrs. YEKCIM have, which we bought from Banana Republic, which no longer carries them, AFAIK:

http://www.sieglers.com/cgi-bin/Sie...t=#ParentCategoryName&wt_subcat=#CategoryName

They are selling it for $35, which is a bargain; I think ours were a hundred bucks, 10+ years ago, at BR. I'm sure there are other sources for photojournalist vests, as well, via google.

that's the exact vest I have...I bought one here...LA police gear for 39.

and my other 2 from a seller on ebay, for 35

there are a lot of other vests to be found online, but most have fewer pockets, and are more epensive....

I have 2 khaki and one black for fall and winter use...

my only concern would be whether the pockets in the vest you bought are actually designed for photo gear, the vests I have , have actual lens pockets.... which may or may not hold your 70-200, possibly not becasue of the diameter, the length woud probasbly make it in the lens pocket..

I'm curious and would like to check out the vest you bought if you wouldn't mind sharing your source...

Here is a pic of the one I ordered. Its a 12 pocket vest. It definately wont hold the big 70-200mm lens, but I wont be getting that for a while. So for price and how often I'd be using, this is a good start for me. If all goes well, I can-up grade for WDW the end of next year if all goes as I hope.

Kyle; this may be all you will ever need and, for sure, it beats trying to carry all your "stuff" in a backpack that you have to take off and fish through every time you need a filter, memory card, lens, or baby grand piano!

How are the bag checks handled at the parks, when using a vest? Do you have to take it off and place it on the table, opening each flap? Just curious. :)

i'm a big fan of carry everything you might possibly need - especially if you are somewhere that you don't have much opportunity to visit often. at sporting and other events where a bag isn't practical, i use a vest. instead of keeping lenses in pockets like many photogs i know, i have lens cases velcroed to the back of my vest and misc items in the front pockets.

i have a few different crumpler and lowepro bags which i use depending on where i'm flying. often i'll take a second, smaller camera bag in my luggage if i don't want to lug a big one everywhere or wear a vest around.

when I was at WDW in February, they waved me right thru at all of the parks, I was surprised..

I went towards the bag check table and they told me to go straight thru the center, because I didn't have a bag, I asked the security people if they wanted to see in my pockets, had the flaps open for pocket where flash was, they said no need, go on in...

spent 7 days there and was never checked... :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

Isn't that interesting. Sometimes they seem so interested in looking in each pocket of our backpack - othertimes it is just a glance. I was just curious - thanks for letting me know Mickey88

and all this time you can carry a bomb. Sigh ;)

Any of the times I have gone through the checkpoints, I never remember seeing a bomb sniffing dog anywhere, if you don't have a bag you pretty much walk right in. Most of the checks are just to establish warm and fuzzies for people coming in and out of the parks.

Anyone notice the costumes on people for Mickey's Halloween Nights that go in to the parks??? :wizard: :joker: pirate:

I carry the camera with lens in a Crumpler $4M bag on the plane, the rest of the camera gear is in my carry on bag.

Once at the parks the camera comes out, wrapped around my wrist all day. In the $4M bag is a 70-200 f/4, sometimes a 50 or 16, and all the batteries, CF cards, monopod, etc.

It's a fair amount of equipment but not so much I can't carry it all day.

Bob (or anyone else who has one :sunny: ),

Is the Crumpler $4M bag well-padded? I can't tell from the pics on-line. I was thinking of getting the Lowepro Slingshot, but now I'm leaning toward a shoulder bag. I really like the looks of the Crumpler, but I'm not sure it would protect my gear like the backpack I have now (this one, in case you're interested http://www.tamrac.com/welcome.htm ).
