Mini- OT Report: ½ way through Summer Vacation for the MouseScrapper Family:
Hope you don’t mind the minor diversion here as I stop w/ Disney and let you know how our summer has been going….
Like most Super Busy!
The kids have been out of school since June 5 and so far we’ve had 2 weekend trips up to Michigan (Sawyer w/ friends & Three Rivers DH’s parents’ lake house); the kids are finishing up 2 weeks of swim lessons tomorrow the 3rd of July and Michael is finishing up a 2 week ½ day outdoor camp. As well he did a 4 day Golf Clinic for special needs kids, Mae did a 2 week ½ day camp and Aldine did a week long all day camp at the local History Center….whew! they have been busy as well as Mom driving them back and forth through town.
As well the Science and Industry Museum in Chicago has a temporary Harry Potter Exhibit going on, my Mom is a member of the Museum so besides free entry and parking she got free tickets for her, my Dad, Matt, Michael, myself and my brother’s fiancé to go together.
I asked Michael to wear his Hogwarts robe (from a Halloween back), plus his glasses he looks like a young Harry indeed!
At the beginning of the exhibit before you go in, they have a stool and the sorting hat. A guide picks a few participants to be sorted. And she saw our Harry Potter and he got to sit on the stool
He was sorted into Gryffindor, but of course!
And then on Father’s Day we celebrated w/ a hotdog lunch (from one of his favorite hotdog places) at the park. We went to Cantigny park which is close to our home, it is a free park (except for parking) and it has walking trails, gardens, a 1st Division War Museum and the huge draw is all the tanks.
Here is Margaret taking one out for a little spin:
Our most recent weekend trip up to MI was eventful and restful, here is a little re-cap for anyone interested:
After picking Michael up from his camp at 3:30 last Friday and brought him home to shower and finish loading the car, I took out the garbage, locked up the house and put the 4 kids plus our dog Maggie in the car (after we had some dinner too) and drove to pick Matt up from work at 5 pm. We headed out on our way from there just before 5:30 pm. Of course we made the same mistake and turned the wrong way to get on the expressway just like we did 2 weeks ago when went up to MI last….duh!
So I’m driving and the things are going quite well, we want to take the Indiana Toll road for part of trip, but needed to pick it up in route vs driving into Chicago to get to it (in Chicago that day a Cub/Sox game just ended and the HUGE Taste of Chicago was beginning plus w/ Friday night in rush hour, not the best time to be heading into the city) DH is pretty sure we’ll find the exit for it w/out much issue…..we’ll see.
As well DH wants to stop at a fireworks store in Indiana to get a few things to shoot off at the lake house; I a bit annoyed w/ stopping, but oh well.
We decide to stop at a bigger place easy off the expressway (Sheltons) but on the way I see an Exit sign for East Indiana Toll Road….
“Is that the exit?” “Quick try and figure it out (using the GPS)!” I say to Matt
He replies “No I don’t think that is the right exit”
Are you SURE!!??!” I say
So we didn’t take the exit, and drive just a few more miles to the fireworks place, when DH announces “UH, I think that was the exit….”
“Great…..
”
We make our stop, and lucky me gets to sit in the van w/ Margaret and the dog. They finally make their way out of the store
And DH takes over driving to try and wind our way back. It’s after 7 pm at this point…ick. After a few wrong turns the GPS has us on course hopefully, driving on an Indiana Interstate. The kids are now watching Toy Story 2 and I handed out a few snacks. The kids and I had pizza at home before picking up Matt from work, but he never ate dinner and was hungry, I didn’t have much to offer him, but I could reach a bag w/ the brat buns for dinner on Sat. So yep he’s eating a dry bun
…but the laughter soon ended.
We see a sheriff car coming the opposite direction and Matt knew he was speeding
We see behind us the sheriff turn around and start coming up behind us, and sure enough we get pulled over. I’m trying to stay calm and keep my cool as not to get mad at DH.
The sheriff comes up to the car, to report how fast he was going and asks where we are headed. Now that the driving noise has subsided the movie sounded really loud and I’m trying to turn it down and DH feels we need to turn it off, and then of course Michael starts flipping out… scared.
The officer goes back to his vehicle and we wait….
We are just so sure we are going to get slapped w/ a ticket. But by some superb luck he just gives Matt a warning….
We head back out on our way, quite relieved and surprised, I try to nicely forewarn DH no more driving fast…please.
We later comment on why we think he didn’t issue us a ticket?
-out of state, sorta lost
-van packed w/ 4 kids and a dog
-one child obviously distraught and don’t know if this made any difference and not that it should but I have an autism awareness puzzle piece magnet on the back of the van…
-oh and my final thoughts, 1) I had a Cub shirt on, maybe he was a Cub Fan OR 2) he likes Mickey Mouse and saw our WDW license plate holder
Well whatever is was we felt we had some magic w/ us that night despite the grave speeding error on behalf of my hubby.
We finally make our way on to the Toll Road, and then into MI we arrive. As we drive these dark country roads, the movie is over and the kids want to listen to some music. So they request as Disney Classic CD. We are listening to the music enjoying the songs and then the song “I Just Want to be King” comes on and all of us even DH are belting out the chorus together….it was a fun family moment.
We finally arrive well after 9 pm IL time to the house and unload and get the kids to bed.
Despite our eventful and long drive up, we had a very nice and relaxing weekend away just our family of 6. so nice!
Here are some pictures to enjoy:
Mae changing her mind about tubing...
On Saturday night we had a marshmallow roast and DH rigged a sheet up in the tree and w/ the projector from home we watched Bolt under the stars
Oh and the red itching spots….no not poison ivy…but about 20 mosquitoes bits on my legs and arm.
well, thanks for enjoying a bit of our busy summer so far and hope you all are enjoying yours as well.
Thanks for reading as always,
