Well... it's OFFICIAL!!!!

They let Monica out of the assylum early!!!

Let the vacation begin!!!!

(so anyone want to bet on how much trouble they can get in??? :rolleyes1)

They're in the air -- scheduled to arrive (right now) 13 minutes late.

Deb - use the Tokyo assignment for your nephew as an excuse to go there & do the Disney parks yourself ;)

I'm out of work at 330pm today....need to stop by BJ's to get the Rosa Regale for $16 (for that Jackie woman), the bank for some cash & then it's off to the airport to pick them up.

I'm sure we'll check in tonight....Cheri can post w/ her phone - maybe she can post a pic tomorrow :confused3

You'll be on your way now!! Enjoy!

Changed my mind on the camera again. Didnt realize that my point and shoot is different from what you guys mean by point and shoot. Looked at the one you got Deb, and just not what I want. I like to carry it around my wrist so that one is still too big. Ordered the fuji a few steps up from what I have. It will still fit in my pocket when I go on a ride at DL. Just dont see the diff in pic quality to be worth lugging around a real camera again. Why should I when Cheri is getting sooooo good with hers!

Where will you be staying?

Well that's the kicker now. Looks like Vegas is out. And we are now cruising to Cabo on Carnival. Shannon is booking it as we speak.

Originally on the cruise idea we weren't going to be staying anywhere. The way the flights worked is we have to fly from Prince George to Vancouver on Sunday and then from Vancouver to San Diego on Monday getting in about 11am. The ship departs that day at 4pm.

On the way home we would disembark and then have 8 hrs to kill before the flight takes off back home on the Saturday. So no hotels required (we have a place to crash in Vancouver).

But now we are looking at it differently. I am a little nervous about arriving the same day as the embarkation.

So now we looked at another flight we can get.
We leave Prince George on Friday night and have a 10 hr layover in Vancouver. We would leave Vancouver at 8am and get into Seattle for 9am. It would then be a layover in Seattle until 6am the next morning (Sunday). So that would mean a hotel in Seattle. We depart Seattle and get into San Diego on Sunday morning at about 11am. That would mean a hotel in San Diego for 1 night until we embark on the ship on the following Monday.

Total travel time from PG to San Diego = 37hrs. Yes it would be faster to drive. But not cheaper. And the flight home is MUCH simpler and faster than driving which is the key concern for us.

But it is interesting to us because it means we get to spend a day in Seattle and a day in San Diego seeing the sites there on the Saturday and Sunday.

I just have one question to anyone that has had a significant layover like that: What happens with your checked bags? Because we are flying between 2 different airline companies, it costs us an extra $100 if we have to take our bags out of the airport with us. But I am concerned that sitting there that long increases the chances of then getting "lost". Air Canada has a policy (because they don't charge for bags) that if the trip starts with them we don't have to pay the charge of the other company (United in this case). But I would think that if I have to take the bags to the hotel with me, that I would then have to pay the fee United charges when I get back to the airport. Anyone with any experience with this?

You need to broaden your horizons Ken. The Fuji has gotten excellent reviews with image quality better than the comparable Canon.

Probably shocking but the next camera purchase I am planning (that is a new camera and not just accessories) is actually the Fuji finepixZ33w - mainly for underwater pics and to take kayaking when I am concerned about getting wet. I'd just forgotten that the camera was a Fuji.

So I can broaden my horizons a bit. .... ;)

Interestingly too, my choice for point and shoots have been Canon. My choice for DSLR was between a Nikon and a Pentax. So I got the big 3 covered...:rotfl:

Might I suggest getting to Seattle and flying Southwest to San Diego?

I'll look into it..

wait... it doesn't go to san diego... hold on... where's our resident travel agent when we need her??? oh yeah... she's headed for a cruise... :headache:

How about get yourself from Quesnel to Seattle... leave the car at Kaylees house (I think she's nearby...might be a good idea to ask first though..) then fly to LA on Southwest... rates are reasonable... and rent a really cheap car to get to San Diego...

Just my thoughts... feel free to throw something at me now... :duck:

I can get both return trip flights for free with points. So that is a major factor. And as mentioned not really concerned about the travel times as they do intrigue me, more concerned about the luggage situation.

either pack extra undies in your carry on or streak naked through Vancouver...

What's more important... losing your luggage or $100...

You want me to have the QM come up there and knock some sense into you???

I'm just asking if anyone knows what is supposed to happen with the checked bags. do I have to take them with me or are they at the airport until i get to San diego? I don't really care either way just am trying to find out so I know what to expect.

Ken,

Who are the carriers in question?

Ironically, I used to work for United Airlines but sadly everything has changed since those days. Once upon a time I would have said that the luggage was checked interline, and so will be held and transferred to the next leg of your journey, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Is the interline connection in this case Air Canada to United. Another question I have is when you check in, are you checked in through, or do you have to check in for each leg?

You are correct in that it is Air Canada to United and the reverse on the way home.

Generally, when I have had connecting flights previously, we have been checked through but then again I have never had a layover of 21 hours before, so not sure if that will make a difference.

Got off the phone with Air Canada rep.

She says that a layover with them is considered 4 hours. Therefore, I will have to claim my bags after each leg and then recheck them for the next leg.

However, Air Canada within Canada allows me to check two bags no charge.
Canada to US I am allowed 1 bag no charge on Air Canada.

United Airlines will charge $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second.
So if we go with 1 checked bag each it will cost us $50 to get the bags from Seattle to San Diego but $0 to go from PG to Seattle.

Highly interesting. Are you Americans not liking to change your clothes on vacations? Why would you book a flight to someplace and not have any checked luggage?:laughing:

On the flipside, here in Canada if you are going to travel anywhere you can take extra stuff, but if you are heading south like on a vacation you need to take less. Guess we can consider it the colder weather allowance :rotfl2::rotfl2: Because you know, when I travel to Vancouver (one of the warmest locales in Canada) i need to take more clothes than when I travel to Chicago in the middle of winter...

Are you planning a visit to Chicago?

I HATE the baggage charge, plus they encourage people to haul their entire lives onto the plane.

When we fly on vacation now, we only fly Southwest because I won't pay for bags. My last business trip was on I think AA and the flight attendant had the nerve to ask me to sit with my coat in my lap to make room for bags. I flatly refused.

This is one area where I really think I show my age.

A trip to Chicago... not planned... yet. But yes i want to come and see Chicago again. I drove through it once but I don't remember ANY of it.

It's hilarious with the baggage charge especially when you consider the latest TSA demands where you weren't allowed any carry-on baggage for travel TO the USA. So just what was the purpose of going anywhere? Gotta go on business but I can't take my suit. Gonna go on vacation but I can't take my bathing suit. Getting a little ridiculous.

I would fly southwest if i could but we've been saving up these points so we want to use them as I am concerned Air Canada might not honour them much longer. So that is what has us stuck on using this method.

I love the idea of flying into Seattle and getting to spend the day there (however I think it is only 3 hours sleep the night before) and I feel so much better getting into San Diego the day before the ship leaves rather than the same day. So the $50 baggage fee is fine for peace of mind.
