Warning about Lowe's and appliances!!!

Just adding my 2 cents on Lowes delivery- we ordered almost $3,000 worth of replacement windows for our house last summer. We had a delivery scheduled for one of those "somewhere between 8:00 and 5:00" timeslots. Well, we were told that the delivery man would call us the night before to confirm delivery, and narrow down the time frame.

Well, we never got a phone call, and we had to take my car to our mechanic, so dh and I left to go drop my car off in the morning. When we returned home, all of our windows were sitting on the front porch- and it looked like they were thrown on there. The plastic was scratched up, and 2 of the screens were torn! The guy just left them on the front porch (in the hot summer sun)- and we live on a busy street. Anyone could have helped themselves to windows! I was furious! :furious:

Oh, I forgot one other little detail. Lowe's charges $65 for delivery. Home Depot only charges $55 AND gives a rebate for the full amount, making delivery free. But they do charge $39 extra for installing the gas dryer, which I would have happily paid to have it done and operational.

It's not just Lowe's. PCRichards charges a delivery fee and an installation fee that's astronomical. They claim that they have a licensed technician do the hook-up and that's why it costs so much. I believe Sears also had a huge delivery fee as well as a hook-up fee. We went with Home Depot and ended up with a nice gift card, our delivery charge refunded and some extra money because they didn't show up the day they said they were delivering.

Seems to be the trend with gas hookups these days, though. I think the days of free delivery and installation are numbered.

we were looking for a new stove (electric) and we noticed

that after the price it said cord $25.99!!!! :confused3

so we asked

the clerk said they dont come with plugs!!!! :confused3

what?!!! an electrical appliance that doenst come with a plug!!!!

when I asked why she said that some homes have 3 prongs and some4 so the delivery guys need to know which one to bring!

come on these are stoves cords---couldnt they just bring both out and use the one they need?

After we left her--we just glanced at refride

the guy was explaing everything I asked if it came with a plug?!!!

he looked at me stupid until I told him what happened with the stove

even he couldnt answer why the stoves dont come with plugs!!!!!

What a pain! I just wanted to say that we purchased almost all new appliances from Lowe's over the past two years (Texas). I know they delivered and installed my dishwasher, washer, and stove/oven. We brought the dryer home ourselves and FIL installed it. These were all electric, however, in all instances the new items were brought in, installed, and the old taken away. Oh...except for the oven. I just asked DH and he reminded me that when they went to install it there was a problem and so they left it for our electrician to fix. We have had some problems with service there though, and it can be hard to get the same info from more than one person. I am glad you got your delivery fee returned!

And to everyone reading this Thread or WILL BE reading this Thread....

What is UP with all this RE-STOCKING "crap". I bought a $1000.00 refridgerator from Home Depot...they delivered the WRONG one. I called and said this is NOT the one....no problem we will pick it right up and deliver the right one....

Next thing I notice is the RE-STOCKING fee on my BILL....Noooo, do not EVEN go there...went right back in to the store, spoke with Customer Service and after speaking to MANY, they REMOVED the HIDEOUS re-stocking fee...

SO PEOPLE, if you are buying LARGE APPLIANCES and they need to be returned for whatever reason....they will get you on that re-stocking fee!!!

Yes, and I think to the OP, you only paid ($65.00) for the DELIVERY!! That was IT...not the installation.

lowe's connected our new stove as long as I had a new gas line. They even disconnected the old one. :confused3

I wouldn't recommend Home Depot either after the way I've been treated these last couple of weeks. I've been yelled at by an assistant manager and lied to by employees - all over a patio set. I e-mailed and wrote a letter to the store manager last week Sunday - no response. So yes, Home Depot may install your dryer for you, but if any problem arises, I doubt it would be resolved to your satisfaction.

At least Lowes was reasonable and refunded you the delivery charge. Home Depot wouldn't have gone that far.

OT---but BB, you need to go higher up the HD food chain. Find out the District manager's name and also find out the RVP's name (Regional Vice President) and postal mail them out letters. Carbon copy all the ASM's and SM of the store you have had problems with. That ought to get something moving. There's also a "Ben Hill" phone # that goes straight to Corporate in Atlanta with problems.

Good luck.

I'm waiting on a delivery from Home Depot - have been for TWO MONTHS! It's going to be very heavy - teak patio set. I wonder if they'll just leave it on the curb. Probably - the receipt says curbside delivery.

And no, I was never offered a rebate for my $65.

Again, at least Lowes delivered the item. I'm still waiting for mine from Home Depot.

pjshaff: A week ago, I wrote a letter and e-mail and snail mailed it to the store manager. No response at all. That's how Home Depot treats its customers. Today, I just filed a BBB complaint. Do you think I should still also write to the regional manager, etc.?

When I called Home Depot's 1-800 customer service number, the wait time was 30-40 minutes. I tried 3 times (all different days/times) and gave up.

Yes, I would still write the RVP and the DM and I would photocopy the letters and send them to the in-store managers so they can see that you're not happy and are going above their heads. I can tell you that watching a manager get chewed out by a DM or higher b/c they haven't given "customer satisfaction" is not fun. (well, that depended on the manager getting chewed out :lmao: )

I'll see if I can get the BenHill # from one of my friends on Monday and if I get it, I will PM it to you.

They have the offer on all appliances over $299. They may not have a similar offer for furniture or other purchases.

We had a gas stove delivered a few years ago. They make you buy a new gas line with it, but will not install it. This year, we bought a new dryer. Again, they would not install it -- said it was because of liability. I have never had a gas appliance installed here in Illinois. :confused3

We bought a new washer, dryer and refrigerator from Lowe's in March and all were delivered and installed with no problems. I even had a rebate for the delivery fee that I got back in April. These were all electric, but they did all the plugging in and hooking up of the dryer vent.

we bought the stove on saturday night and sunday they delivered it sunday morning. They hooked up the new gas line and was in and out with in 10 minutes. Maybe the store policy is different for each store? We stay in Illinois also. I use to work for sears service and we always installed appliances.

I ordered kitchen cupboards from Home Depot a couple of years ago, paid $50 for delivery and lo and behold when they delivered them, they weren't even allowed to bring them in the house. They offloaded them in the driveway and I was responsible to get them in the house. I wasn't happy since my husband was working a double and I had 5 small children at the time and was expecting the 6th!!! Lesson learned, always ask what is included in any fees they charge!!!!

We had this happen, though without the whole 5 kids or pregnant thing. When we talked to the store, they said they were supose to bring them into the house, and so they refunded our delivery fee. Everyone we talked at from Home Depot, told us they were supose to deliver them into the house. We were kind of annoyed having to bring an entire kitchen's worth of cabnets into the house, but we were quite happy with the resolution offered, where they removed the delivery fee.

I imagine that local codes vary across the country.

I live in the same county and state as Steve. When we had our new dryer delivered (Sears) they told us that only a licensed plumber could do the gas connections.

Perhaps Home Depot subcontracts to local plumbers who do the actual install? :confused3

I was okay with them refunding the delivery fee, but can't say I was happy because now I have to find someone to come out and do the hook-up. I left messages with a plumber and a handyman but haven't heard back from either. It also means one of us has to take off from work and wait for someone to come. And, of course, it means we don't have a working dryer yet. DD is coming home from overnite camp tomorrow with a month's worth of cruddy clothes. I think I'll be spending tomorrow afternoon at the laundromat.

MY parents (75yo) had ordered all new cabinets from Home Depot last summer for the home in Maine. They were doing the kitchen completely over. When the delivery truck arrived they made my parents stand in the YARD with them while they unloaded all of them and then MADE them take each cabinet out of its box and check and make sure nothing was wrong with each cab. With boxes all over their lawn, they made my parents sign off that everything was A.O.K and proceeded to leave...my parents then said..."are you going to take all these boxes that are all over our yard"..."NOPE, that is not our job"! Thankfully, they could call a relative to help dispose of the boxes and haul the cabinets in the house. I know Dad told HD all about this BUT that was that.

Now I built a new home and moved in June 2005. All the cabinets came from HD. They arrived. The men loaded them in one of the empty rooms and that was that...I did not have to go thru each box making sure they were all fine and accounted for. I am in MA...Mom is in Maine. Plus, I was glad my cabinets REMAINED in their box until my builder installed them unlike Mom's whose were all over her house.

I can see how the op would expect the new one to be installed but I dont know why anyone would expect the installer to remove their old one.
