TT is saying a dependent child qualifies for the American Opportunity Tax(?) credit on the child's return, even though the child is a dependent on the parent's return. This is a credit for tuition paid for undergraduate education.

It has never happened before, and it seems to me perhaps it shouldn't be happening now. Anyone else get a surprise on the child's tax return?

Okay, I fixed it so there is no credit now. But Turbo Tax is really letting me down this year. That is 3 major things they have done wrong this year that I knew where wrong and figured out how to fix. If I hadn't been aware, Turbo Tax would have really messed up these returns. I have been a big proponent of TT, but I think next year I will go a different route.

What were the other 2 major things? I use TT too, just wondering.

I had trouble with the state TT in the past. Also I had to manually override something when i did an amended return one time.

Interesting. Was planning to work with our college student this evening on his tax return. I have been using Turbo Tax for years and never had a problem before. Really curious so that our return is correct - what did you have to do to correct the issue?

I had marked dependent on another person's return but for whatever reason, TT didn't pick that up. I went back to the beginning and unchecked dependent on another persons forms, then went back and checked it again. That time it picked it up.

The other 2 problems related to the energy efficiency tax credit and calculating personal property taxes. 3 completely different areas on 2 different returns.
