TSM standby-less test Oct. 6-9

I wonder how this test went in the eyes of Disney, and what they see as the end game?

How about another experiment: I wish they would try the Universal system just for one day (deluxe/moderate or purchasers have unlimited no-reservation access to most rides). It takes 30 seconds to explain, and everyone understands clearly. I would guess 99% of Universal customers understand how it works.

How long does it take to explain completely the current Disney system? What percent of the customers completely understand it? Every time they tweak it more people are confused, and it becomes a burden for so many. Many who do understand are happy, but it appears many more who do not understand, plus many of those who do, are unhappy. At least they have more time to shop and eat.

I hope this experiment leads them to trying more variations. Just announce it in advance!

Although we are on opposite sides of the debate, I respect that you at least are able to conduct a rational debate without taking disagreement personally (at least I think that's the case).

I never take anything on the Dis personally and I have pretty thick skin.

But I still see what's happening- clearly.

At any given moment at the WDW parks there are probably more people in standby lines than there are actually enjoying attractions, dining, and shopping combined. If we're not in standby lines anymore when they eliminate them, where will we be? :confused3 Meandering around eating Mickey Bars. :mickeybar

And the profit margins on a Mickey Bar are incredible. They would love it if everyone left he standby line and got a Mickey Bar. Iger's bonus would be even larger.

I don't think Disney could use the Universal plan because they would shut out too many guests. I wonder how long Universal will be able to continue offering express pass.

Personally, I don't think there is enough time in a day to explain the FP+ system. Most of the things I've learned about it are from the Dis Boards and that's basically tribal knowledge.

Universal's system would never work. Have you seen the crowd level difference? While I can't begin to tell you the level of my dislike of Universal after our first and what will be my last visit- their fotl system is great.... I think.

We only used it a couple of times because the park was so empty- not light crowds- EMPTY- that it just wasn't needed. Most times we walked thru either line without being checked. Who cared, no one was there. This was all while Disney was packed with people.

Which btw, leads me to conclude Disney's problem is that they're just too good! :)

I hope they continue to refine the system and add more features too. Testing is part of that. While not happy to be inconvenience, I also understand the need for real world testing and announcing would stop that from happening.

Why not just sell them IN the standby line?

I can't remember the exact details, but someone on here reported during this during the summer...

There was a day that everything went down at MK I think. So there were long lines at GR, and they rolled a refreshment cart up. And the person thought they were going to give out water or something. And then they started selling it!

Why not have standby lines only that go through food and gift areas?

Hurry up, call Bob Iger.

I thought of that too. :)

Just like Dumbo has the play area with pagers, just set up the snack shop or gift store with pagers.

Bob, I expect my royalty check when WDW starts this. ;)

To be fair, no one is "piling on" because you prefer the concept of having no standby line. They were reacting to your demeaning post. And before you again trot out the explanation that you weren't referring to someone "disliking" the system, but that they had difficulty using the system, it's at least as insulting (if not more so) to say that people who are capable of reserving a room, feeding themselves, etc. experience no difficulties, thus implying that anyone who does have difficulties is a dolt who cannot even manage basic life needs.

Right, not insulting at all.

:thumbsup2

By all accounts, the Dumbo "queue-less" queue has been a success. Not so long ago, Disney was touting this as the wave of the future. Expanding that concept would be a positive, you could do other things while waiting (to include shopping and eating as well as some interactive activities).

Best of all, no one would have to be turned away because they didn't have a reservation (I apologize in advance if the previous statement is interpreted as condescending or piling on). They get their virtual place in the line when they walk up and then entertain themselves with other things until it's time to ride instead of weaving back and forth through switchbacks.

At least on its surface, the Dumbo model would seem to be a good compromise between legacy FP and an all FP+ (With no standby option) model.

If the goal was to help first-timers figure things out, they could have done that with paper FP. Things they could have done...sent out DVDs explaining how to use it, glossy instruction booklets, magnets for the frig which say "Don't forget about Fastpass or you'll make Dumbo sad!," sent emails, etc.

I would have been ok with that, even if it meant I got less or they ran out earlier.

Because the biggest loss to me is that each day isn't a clean slate anymore.

This is how our family feels too.

Man, a year ahead of me. Quit being so cutting edge! ;)

Agreed. Now that the people I travel with are getting older, they like their breaks - especially breaks where they can sit in A/C. They could even do meet and greets in these.

The funny thing is, when Disney moved the ride and added another spinner, the demand dramatically decreased. I think this was caused by the move to a less visible location.

I am glad you apologized for being condescending. Otherwise I would've been really insulted! I also think your Dis Board conspiracies need to stop.;)

Don't forget they doubled Dumbo's capacity. That was a critical element as well.

If Disney decides to go with no standby line on the headliners and fastpass only, the new system will suck, and upset a ton of customers. There will be so many day guests and people who may have been before and come back who will be unaware. Where will that leave them? The legacy system worked because it was simple, it allowed for hopping and didn't force you to pick 3 right away. If you got to the parks in the morning you weren't shut out of a fastpass and you always had the standby option. If Disney pushes forward with this and has no stand by and a advanced reservation system for headliners. WOW, I would hate to work at guest relations!

True. But even if they had not done that (it wouldn't be feasible to replicate major rides), at least the wait, even if it took just as long, would be less excruciating than the old way of inching forward, back and forth, winding ever so slowly toward the goal.

Maybe they could come up with something less high tech than pagers. I don't know, something like giving you slip of paper with a time to come back and ride printed on it? :rolleyes1

Please stop disrespecting other people's preferences and condescendingly piling on. ;) :rotfl2:
