This is a win-win. The miners and their families are getting a free trip and Disney is getting good PR. I'm not naive enough to think Disney is doing this merely out of the kindness of their hearts, they are getting a lot of good publicity, but even with the ulterior motive it is a good thing for the miners and their families.

Why are people even concerned about the resort the miners are being given rooms at or if the miners free rooms will interfere with their own vacations? Why would any other guest staying at your resort interfere with your vacation? You are staying at a resort with 2000+ rooms. Chances are that you will not notice if the miners are staying at your resort unless you see something like a news story being recorded.
Disney would place them in the most convenient spot for them (Disney) as far as what they have open, considering in what is likely to be booked up. The value resorts are what sell right now, especially with the economy how it is. My bet would be that it will be in whatever resort tends to have the least bookings, and quite possibly will spread them over multiple resorts, considering the large group. For Disney, they own the rooms. Giving away the rooms doesn't cost them anything, unless them giving away the rooms results in possible loss of revenue. For example if they have 100 rooms left at POR and 225 left at Poly, they are more likely to have empty rooms left at Poly, and when all is said and done, Disney will increase their revenue by giving away the rooms at Poly - even though the rate is higher - and letting the rooms at POR be sold to paying customers, who may opt to stay at a value or even off property if they could not book a moderate resort due to their budget. It is similar to web sites that have a "name your price" option. When booking those, typically you are guaranteed a room at a certain level or higher. This is because they will give you whatever is available. You may book a 3 star or higher offer and end up with a place like Holiday Inn or you may end up at a Ritz Carlton. Money is not a factor. If they have empty rooms at GF, and Pop is booked up....they will put them in GF versus bump a paying customer out of their Pop room. Paying guests get what they pay for. People who are getting free rooms do not apply to this situation, as they are not paying. Disney gives away rooms not only to cases like this, but also to people such as travel agents and their own Disney employees who may be traveling on business, amongst other cases.

All I can say is that I will be there during this week and I would be thrilled to see them. I don't care where they are from, who is paying for what, they all went through a hellish ordeal and I would love to pat them on the back for it.

Why so much nastiness about this? Like others have said, it doesn't really matter why Disney is doing it. It's just a nice thing for the miners.

As for what Chileans earn, the credit bureau I work for did outsource a lot of job to Chile so take that for what it's worth.

Celebrities stay at WDW all the time. There's a continuous parade of them. Presidents, senators, governors, foreign dignitaries, actors, sports stars, reality show casts, travel show hosts, you name it. Some come to vacation with their families, some do publicity work for Disney.

Disney is very, very good at handling celebrity visits. Have you ever seen swarms of media people in the parks or resorts following celebrities around? No. They'll have their own in-house media groups doing the photos and videos.

Trust me, the Chilean miners' being there isn't going to interfere with anyone's vacation. Just like any other celebrities, unless they're in a parade, or you happen to come across a photo shoot, you won't even know they're there.

You do realize the people staying at Values are PAYING guests just like you, right?

Lol, of course it is. I've said it all along. So it isn't free, it is a barter of sorts, lol.

I will be there then. I don't feel entitled to anything just because my trip is costing money.

Frankly the snobbery and prejudice is sad. One doesn't have to be ignorant to take a mining job. It may be the only job available. Hope you all never need to take a menial job to feed your families. Pretty sad to be so snobbish in an economy where people are needing to take such jobs.

I don't know if envy is the correct word. I can't imagine have 2 mistresses and a wife. You'd have to be nuts. This is coming from a woman. He couldn't possibly make them all happy. What a sad thread!! I just don't get how a small group of miners could ruin your vacation if you are going at the same time?!?!? And really, to be so jealous of them because Disney decided to treat them to this? It doesn't matter the reason...if Disney selected me for a free trip, I'd be thrilled. If they chose a friend of mine, I'd be happy for them. If I had just gone through a terrible ordeal like they did, it would be a wonderful thing that might help me to regain sanity. It doesn't matter if they are doing it for publicity or not. It doesn't matter what nationality they are or what they can/can't afford. You aren't paying for it, correct? So why let it bother you?

I really don't think a billion people are flocking to WDW to see the miners. I know I didn't feel compelled to jump on to book my trip just because they are going.

Really why? Don't get me wrong, I am glad they are alive and well, but I think there are so many more Americans who deserve a free trip to WDW. Anyone know how many trips WDW has given to kids who lost a parent in the war? Or a free trip to a disabled veteran, or a child with cancer??

This thread, although may have been started as a genuine inquiry has turned into a poor output of opinions.

The DIS and these boards are not about writing hurtful or mean things. I'm sure when Pete and Walter started these boards their intentions were never for people to pose hateful or hurtful comments.
