We will be staying at the Airport Marriott Hotel for 4 nights beginning on March 14 evening; we will check out on March 18 AM, for a 1 week Disney cruise.

The option are to rent a car (which is the best car rental company to go to, in terms of renting from a prestigious multinational company, but at relatively economical prices) or use the airporter shuttle (?) from the hotel.

One day, we might go the WDW. One night, we might go to Universal Studios. The third day we might go to the Premium Discount (and perhaps other discount and regular shopping) malls, and also go to International Drive?

Obviously, with the car, there is more flexibility, but potentially a higher cost. We will be 2 adults and one child aged 10.

Your options aren't that good.

None of the hotels or the airport have a shuttle to the places you want to go. So your hotel will shuttle you to the airport only. There are really no "low cost" shuttles from the hotel to locations you want to go.

You can arragne for limos or cabs, but I think both of those options are going to cost you considerably more then a rental car. You are just moving around too much.

Your only economy option is the public bus system, but considering your plans and the state of public transport in America plan on LONG commutes.

Is there some reason you went with this hotel? It is not well located for any of your activities.

It sounds to me like a rental car is your best bet. Go to www.mousesavers.com and read her rental car info.

We booked this hotel, on points - all the hotels on points with this (and other chains) on International Drive and at Lake Buena Vista and Kississimmee were booked solid, for those dates.

What are the major shuttle companies that offer transportation in Orlando? What would be the price per passenger (adult or child) to go between the hotel (and back) and the 2 theme parks, or to International Drive?

Mears is going to cost $30 R/T for an adult and $22 R/T for a child. For that price you could just book a towncar or negotiate a flat rate taxi fare. You're really going to have to rent a car. Free is good but if you can get a good price at a Disney Value hotel you can use DME to get from the airport for free, you can use Disney transportation for free, you won't have to pay to park in Disney and you won't be wasting a lot of time driving.

You really may be better off paying for a hotel room and saving your points for another trip.

I think a rental car is the way to go. You can check general rental car rates for 4 days on a site like Expedia or Travelocity. If you rent from Avis or Budget, you can drive to Cape Canaveral for the cruise. You can also pick up a rental car at the same Cape Canaveral location after the cruise and drive to the airport. It will cost you considerably less than the $30/person Disney Cruise Line charges for transfers.

How does one then go from the car rental outlet at Pt./Cape Canaveral to the cruise ship, and vice versa - taxi?

Avis and Budget have shuttles that take you from their location in Cape Canaveral to the port. They will also pick you up at the port and take you to pick up your rental car after the cruise for no extra charge.
