Transgenders and bathrooms....

As far as I know, you don't have to dress or look like a woman to actually enter a women's bathroom. It's just a matter of what gender you "identify" with. That's the issue.

I can go into the men's bathroom if I want and stand by the urinals and nobody can do a thing about it if I claim I identify with being male.
You don't have to claim anything. Most places don't have laws about who uses which bathroom. If you want to hang out by a urinal, go for it.

Didn't a TV show do unisex bathrooms years ago?...(insert Jeopardy theme music while I go Google the name of show)...Oh yeah, Ally McBeal. Does anyone remember if it worked out?

I'm fine with restrooms all being for everyone. I'm not worried about someone watching me pee. Frankly, I'm surprised it's even an issue.

I agree.

I have absolutely NO issue whatsoever sharing a bathroom with a transgendered individual. None whatsoever. I DO have a problem sharing a bathroom with a MAN who is pretending & taking full advantage of this new law in order to get a peek at girls. And I'm not necessarily talking about a pervert that is looking to harm a woman or child, but just a full-blooded, testosterone-charged male looking for a cheap thrill. Not sure about you all, but in my teens and early 20's, I knew PLENTY of guys that would JUMP at the chance to enter a women's locker room, fitting room, or restroom... and now they can legally. I'm not comfortable with that at all. Women will have absolutely no privacy. Sorry, but I don't want to pee in front of a normal male that is standing outside my stall just so he can get his jollies.

Honestly, we go in this direction, we might as well make every bathroom, fitting room, and locker room unisex in every public place and school. Just get rid of all gender separations. What's the point of having male/female if we can go in either that we choose?

Sad that in order to give someone else their "right to choose", it takes away my "right to privacy, decency, & dignity."

No, I did not know plenty of guys like that at all. No offense, but I find it hard to believe that you actually knew PLENTY of people like that. My guess is you THOUGHT you knew people like that. What happened to all these people you knew? Are they all sex offenders now?
Teen boys are horny, plain and simple. Dreaming that they can go into a women's locker room and drool at all the naked women would certainly make them...er...excited. Actually doing it is a whole other thing. Again, there are laws to protect people from perverts. Males can't go into a locker room and come into the private shower with you. They can't ********** in public. And if they just sit there and stare at people and make them uncomfortable, at minimum they will be asked to leave. But again, I have absolutely no worries that any of that will even happen to begin with!

This is the part of this thread that is getting to me. There have been no new laws passed stating men can legally go into a womans restroom! That is not at all what has happened.

I remember unisex bathrooms at my cousin's dorm building. However, the stalls were designed without any visible cracks and were about 8 ft tall. They had no urinals. The shower rooms were single occupancy with a locked, windowless door. That was before Ally McBeal.

However, I do remember seeing Disney on Ice - Frozen. The line for the women's room was ridiculous. I joked with someone in line that the men's room was almost empty, and she said something about maybe having someone stand guard so that maybe they could use it.

There are already laws to cover illegal voyeurism. This NC law is in search of a problem.

MTE

It's been said numerous times. Nothing has changed. There are no new laws saying men can now go into the women's room. That's why I don't understand what the issue is.

I can condemn whatever I want. Why do you care? I don't make rules that affect anyone else.

Well, if you're going to condemn an entire state due to the actions of a few within that state, that's a form of bigotry no better than that which you condemn. But, if you're okay with that, no I really don't care.

The law certainly doesn't do what was claimed (allowing men into ladies rooms). If anything it's the opposite if a male to female trans wants to use the ladies room.

However, several businesses have made public statements that trans people are welcome to use the facilities that correspond with gender identity. Target is probably the most prominent. That being said, almost every one I've been to has a unisex family restroom. I don't really think that anyone should be forced into using one.

Pressure against businesses is a very good way to get a state to repeal a law or not pass one in the first place. That worked pretty well with several proposed "religious freedom" laws that would bypass civil rights protections if someone claimed "deeply held beliefs".

To the bolded, I can't be the only women who (with the help of friends) used the guy's bathroom in a bar because there was nobody in it and the women's line was ridiculously long.

It's one thing to be an activist. It's quite another to just simply avoid a state because you believe yourself to be superior to its residents.

Seriously! I was thinking I was the only one and then thinking we needed to do organize some bar crawl to give some of these people an experience ;-)

This has suddenly become the issue of the day. Remember a few years ago, it was gay marriage. Does anyone really care about gay marriage any more except politicians wh think they can get some angst up over it. I've been to lots of bathrooms in Europe where Men and women shared the space. Who in the hell cares? I've seen guys peeing and it's not pretty. I wouldn't dwell in it. I see Plenty of guys peeing in alleys! I doubt if any guy wants to see me peeing...certainly my husband doesn't...and if he does them he is sick and should be in a mental institution. It's just crazy what we in America Complain about.

It's just a certain segment of our political landscape who chooses to ignore the real problems going on and focusing on boogeymen for lack of a more thoughtful term because that's the level it is at....and there's enough of gullible constituents who get caught up in the frenzy.

I was thinking the same thing. My DH monitors the door for me and makes the guys wait until I'm done.

 especially in a bar!

North Carolina residents did elect those few that made the laws as their representatives to speak for them.

A percentage of NC residents elected those representatives into office. And at the time, I imagine most didn't know they would come up with such a stupid law. I certainly hope nobody holds it against me for the stupid things my state does. I didn't vote for most of them, but I have no doubt that even if the other guys won, they'd still do things I didn't support.
