Transgenders and bathrooms....

North Carolina residents did elect those few that made the laws as their representatives to speak for them.

And New Yorkers voted in the guy who thought banning large sodas was a good idea. I think it's a stupid idea. That does not mean I believe New Yorkers are stupid just because the guy they elected had a stupid idea.

I don't think anyone said that all North Carolina residents were stupid just like nobody said all New Yorkers were stupid. Most people know that there is a large part of the population that does not support this law.

You don't have to think the residents are stupid to support the companies, entertainment industry and people deciding to not visit the state or city. One can think the new law is stupid and not want to be part of it without thinking all the residents are stupid. However, I do think that the voters who voted these people in and are now saying they didn't know their views are being disingenuous. If you didn't know their views then you shouldn't have voted for them, so you are now reaping what you sowed.

NC has suffered a pretty strong backlash from the entertainment industry with numerous singers canceling concerts in that state and at least two big businesses (Paypal and Google) are either scrapping plans for growth and moving to another state or putting any growth on hold till the bill is reversed. Many other companies have stated they are leaving the state.
I can fully support these companies and the entertainment industry not wanting to do business in a state with strong discrimination laws without thinking the residents themselves are stupid. Hopefully it will send a message to any other state representatives that wanting to limit citizen's civil rights will not be tolerated by the rest of the country.

I know DH and his friends usually have a yearly week long golfing trip to NC. They have decided to try out courses in another state this year. They don't think the residents are stupid but they do think the law is discriminatory and will not do business in a state with such laws.

There's a huge difference between a stupid idea and an idea that's purpose is to discriminate.
I understand being defensive when you think someone is generalizing. The reality is something is going on in some areas of this country that allow these types of politicians to get into office and enact things like this. Why are they going to continue to fight for it if it's not what the people there want?

The difference with a business or entertainer is that they are publicly denouncing the policy & demanding action.

Avoiding the state silently only hurts the golf course & surrounding businesses. It doesn't actually apply any pressure to the NC Government. Your husband & his friends aren't sending any kind of message by their absence unless they actually take the time to physically send a message.

PP didn't say she knew which state governments to petition. She said she knew which states to avoid.

Not necessarily. If the tourism industry notices a big decline in people coming to the state, of course the NC govt will notice. If local business start losing money they are the ones who need to send the message to their own gov't if they want that to change.
A letter from 10 John Does in NY isn't going to make a difference. Letters from the 10 golf course in that state that are losing money or seeing a big decline in guests will probably have more of an impact.

At least that is how I see it.

I'm sure there are people who are proud of these actions & thrilled with their politicians, just as there are those who aren't. I'm sure there are those who cast their vote hoping for something like this, and I'm sure there are those who cast their vote knowing they were choosing a hack, but a hack that hopefully was a better choice than the alternative.

I guess I'm just a little jaded knowing that I will once again go to the polls this year & choose numerous representatives who don't necessarily represent my beliefs, but who hopefully contradict my beliefs somewhat less frequently than the "other option".

What utopia has such amazing stall doors?!

Honestly, I bet that would take care of the majority of the issues people have. It guarantees total privacy while doing your business.
we have a store called "At Home" and while the store itself is a basic warehouse structure, the bathroom is awesome! It has these types of doors and room for your purse/coat , larger space to actually turn around in. The only open area is above your head and it is almost 8 foot high. Some airports have similar styles basically to thwart theft of bags etc while in the stall which I like. The downside, if you get locked in , you are LOCKED in! LOL. Keep your cell phone charged if you need to call for help!

They are not obligated to send any kind of message. Although being a part of the drop in tourism will be a strong enough message. It is absolutely their right to not want to support a state and reward them with their money if the state has adopted some very strong discrimination laws.

The golf courses and surrounding businesses are the ones that need to be sending the messages to their government telling them that their stupid law is hurting their business.

I am not sure why you are so insistent that people should ignore their own convictions and support a state that has gone back in time in civil rights. Boycotting a state for their stupid law is supposed to create economic pressure to get the state to change the law.

How will the golf course even KNOW why people don't come if nobody tells them? What if their business doesn't decline enough for anyone to notice? Even if there's a huge decline, it'll be 2-3 years before anyone connects the dots.

And hey, it's your right to do whatever you want. I just maintain that a protest nobody knows anything about is no protest at all.

I do understand feeling that way.
Everyone has to weigh their options and decide which beliefs are most important to them when choosing someone. With this situation, it shouldn't come as a surprise that that lawmakers passed this. Either people agree or they weighed their options and decided discrimination wasn't an important enough issue to rule out a choice. It's not like this just appeared out of thin air. Look at the NC Govenor, he's been against the gay community for a long time. Somehow people are voting for him which is basically saying that's ok. It shouldn't be. Treating all law abiding people with dignity and basic respect shouldn't be somewhere way down on the list of what people want in those that represent them.

Your post does not make any sense - you are comparing apples to oranges. In the case of NY - it was ONE guy with a stupid idea. In the case of NC it was the house, the senate and the governor.

Anyway - I am for unisex bathrooms. Why do we need separate bathrooms in the first place? Unisex restrooms would be easier for everyone.

Pretty sure it is easy enough to connect the dots if the state suffers an economic drop directly after instituting a highly discriminatory law.

If the impact to the golf course is so minimal that they don't notice it, then no harm, no foul. If the business suffers greatly then that will spur them on to go to their government to make changes. With all the backlash in the newspapers about how others feel about this law, somebody would have to be living under a rock to not be able to connect the dots.

if this yields MORE bathrooms I am for it. Stadiums, bars, whatever, women take longer, I get it, but geeze~ just increase the volume of stalls!

Nobody has to connect the dots in 2-3 years. It's all over media right now that people are pulling out of planned trips to NC because of this law. You'd have to be living under a rock to not notice this. Trust me, people are aware of this protest.

ETA: in case anybody questions that statement...

I'm glad this thread has gone on for 12 pages (so far). That's the point of this thread (and a discussion board in general).... to bring up topics and discuss them and learn.

I did not do much research before starting this thread and in the course of the 12 pages I've done more research and have learned new things about the topic and have increased my knowledge.

Apparently, according to most people on this thread, all bathrooms ARE unisex. Just ignore the sign and go into whichever one suits your fancy that day. o_O

There are many NC residents, contrary to popular belief, that are very happy with their representation and how the state government is speaking for them!!
I'm sure those those individuals that are delighted will happily step up to the plate and pay extra taxes so the NC colleges and universities won't suffer the financial loss that is looming.
