Transfering of Points Question

We're in the home stretch with our resale purchase of AKV points - just waiting for the closing to finish (we have everything in as well as the seller) and it to be sent to Disney to put us in the system. WAHOO!

We are planning a trip for August 19. That puts our 7 month window at January 19th. We'd like to book at AKV before 7 months to have that home resort advantage on what we'd like (we got a small contract and a Value Studio is what we're aiming for). It's going to be cutting everything awfully close, depending on how long it takes Disney to put us into the system!

Here's my question - we will be about 3 pts short (with borrowing next year's points) for our whole trip. Some good friends that we will be traveling with have some extra DVC points that they are willing to give us, but SSR is their home resort. What's the best way of going about making this reservation?

Book 6 nights (hopefully before the 7 month) and then have them transfer the points and book that last night right at the 7 month window?

How long does it take for transfered points to show up in our account? Is it instantly or does it take a couple of days?

We plan on talking to them this week about their points and wanted to have a "game plan" in how we should proceed.

Thanks for any advice you have to offer!

Probably best, if you can to reserve the first 6 nights before 7 month window because at 7 months all points become equal so to speak and all non-AKV owners may book as well.

Only potential issue I can see here is if your friends transfer just those 3 points to you and then you cannot book at Value like you plan - you'd need more points then to cover the reservation and transfer rules only allow you to have 1 transfer either into or out of your member account per year (you'd be using your 1 transfer having points come in and your friend would be using their 1 transfer with the points going out). Of course you can call MS day of booking to see what's available for Value but, then again, there's the risk by the time your friend calls MS to transfer points into your account that availability could be gone. You may want to just have your friend reserve the last night and link it to your 6 night reservation and transfer your points for that night to them.

Although transfer is virtually instantaneous there is a slight risk you can lose the availability of booking what MS first tells you is available. You can probably accomplish the whole transfer/booking scenario in a conference call between you, friend and MS in one call. Or you would first alert MS that you are allowing your friend to transfer points into your member account & then they'd call MS to complete the transfer over; usually within hour you can see points but a simple call back to MS and they can tell you over phone that they are in fact there.

Good luck :goodvibes Congrats on your contract too

Thanks for the help! You're correct that we'd like to book before it's open to everyone else. I just got an e-mail that we'll close by the end of the week. Then it'll just be waiting for Disney to get us in the system. I think we're going to make it before the 19th!! Whew....

You've given us some good info to go on! It would be nice to stay in the same room, but moving one night isn't the end of the world either. Even if we have to change to a standard view, or even savannah view for one night of our stay (if the value isn't available) we'd only be looking at needing a total of 5 or 7 points from our friend instead of 3. Gee, concierge level would only be 9 more points!! Hmmmmm  :thumbsup2

That's great news & hopefully they'll have you in the system quickly :thumbsup2

Just be sure that you get enough points transferred to cover all the bases Because once that transfer happens MS will not allow another even if it turns out you'd need to go with a unit that requires more points. This 1 transfer per year rule is very limiting :sad2: ; I wish DVC would consider making it 2 transfers per member per year for at least a bit more flexibility !

Good luck
