Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing.

I'm asking this is all seriousness because I've heard that from a few people. I've also read on Twitter where a few people are genuinely shocked they are getting divorced.

What made you think that it was "nonsense" and that there was no marriage contract? Trust me, you certainly aren't alone. And I'm not "picking on" you. I just wondered because you are the 1st person I noticed that said they didn't think the marriage was a sham.

My thoughts were that arranged marriages and contractual relationships have been around in hollywood for basically forever. The studios used to arrange 'relationships' for stars and to promote things all the time. Several actresses have said that they were approached by Cruise's people. Scarlett Johansson did meet him and has talked about the meeting at the Scientology center.

There whole relationship didn't make much sense to me. It seemed too scripted. Too Hollywood. A young, pretty C-list Hollywood actress asked to meet the A list star she had a crush on as a teenager...he agrees and they are immediately couch-jumping madly in love?

Clearly I'm no romantic.

I thought the girl in question might have left KH on bad terms and it was sour grapes..but I just talked to my DD and she reiterated that this girl was very factual and it was well known in their circle of family/friends.

I guess I thought as odd as the paring might be in my eyes..they had indeed married for the usual reasons. I can't say I did think it was a sham..naive perhaps? Nothing should surprise me in the world of celebs tho!

I'm sorry, I just don't buy "marriage contracts" and "nondisclosure agreements". I don't see how either of those would be legally binding to begin with.

Although Tom is still crazy.

I used to work for one of NYC's uber-elite catering company, that my cousin books for. It's clientele is the multi-billionaires like Trump, the Rockefellers, the Whitneys, the Vanderbilts, the Gettys, as well as some high profile celebrity events. I have posted this many times on the DIS. I also posted the next part about signing a non-disclosure agreement in the past.

I had to sign a non-disclosure agreement once to work for a super private wedding for a high powered, Hollywood person. The guest list was extraordinary. :faint: This person wanted all his guests to be able to feel safe and that their privacy at the event was guaranteed. that they could just let loose and have a fun time without worries.

The non-disclosure agreement, which I'm sure was triple checked by various different lawyers to be iron-clad and unable to be disputed in any/all courts of law pretty much stated that I WILLINGLY AGREE to sign away my children, any of their children, any monies I had, will ever have, as well as any my children's children will ever have, PLUS such an exorbitant amount times the amount of money I would make for disclosing or selling info, or disclosing it to someone else who then disclosed the info, that even Warren Buffett would be destitute if he disclosed info after signing such an agreement.

Of course I'm exaggerating about the children part. ;) But non-disclosure agreements exist.

:thumbsup2 I always thought Tom was odd, and it seemed Katie came out of the wood work to marry him....I always thought she was too quiet and he was too jumpy--then I read this thread...seems I was right.

We could always ask a bus driver.

Wow! I had to google him in images as I did not know who he was or what he looks like. Then googled Suri and seeing both pics is just a huge "wow" from me! She resembles Katie in many ways but boy, does she look like Josh Hartnett!

yep..and Katie had a brief thing with him in between Chris Klein and right before she hooked up with Tom.

Sounds like you are just a romantic. Nothing wrong with that.

I would have been too, had I not witnessed the ultra-exuberant couch jumping incident, :Pinkbounc and Tom publicly declaring his undying love for Katie a few too many times. He has been notorious for being such a private person but suddenly he's couch jumping :Pinkbounc and way too open about him & Katie. :scratchin

That's when pretty much even the skeptics & non-believers gaydar goes off. (Not that there's anything wrong with it. ;) Unless you are part of a religion which denies homosexuality and you have to jump on couches to prove you are in love with a woman. :rolleyes1 )

Thank you. Makes sense. People tell me that I'm FAR to jaded about things so I'm genuinely curious sometimes.

 So who was the wedding for? I have no idea who you are and if you are lying--I mean is Imzadi your real name? How would someone know you were breaking the code of silence.....come on you tell little ole ToddyLu...how bout it everyone, don't you think that Zadi owes it to us to spill the beans...(please take this in the fun spirited way it is meant)

I dated a guy whose Mom belonged to the Church of Religious Science. We went to channelings and vortex meetings....I DID NOT MARRY HIM.

I'd tell you, but then you'd have to hand over all your kids too. (Which actually may be a good thing, depending on how you feel about your kids at the moment. ;) ) And I hope you don't have a rich uncle about to die & leave you a hefty inheritance. :headache:

There are contractual agreements for everything. Heck, I've worked for companies that make you sign nondisclosure agreements. A marriage, by definition, is a contract. There are arranged marriages in many cultures today. What is there to "buy?" That people would enter a marriage w/out being "in love" to benefit themselves in some other way (financially?) You really don't believe that can happen?

I have a non-disclosure agreement with my current employer, too. What I am saying is that my spouse isn't my employer. I don't see how a nondisclosure agreement could be binding in a marriage. Or that a marriage would actually be seen as a business arrangement in a civil court. I understand prenups are, but that's specifically related to finances.

Let's say she did sign something. And after the divorce, she writes a book. Tom sues, citing their "nondisclosure agreement". I just don't see that standing up in a court.

Marriage as a contractural agreement has been in place for centuries. It still is a civil contract as evidenced by the division of property/assets/custody in case of divorce. Romantic liaisons occurred on the side.

Old Hollywood had more dating arrangements then arranged marriages, but it happened. Look at Rock Hudson, Cary Grant, Randolph Scott, Barbara Stanwyck, and Joan Crawford. All purported to have entered into relationships to cover up their sexuality so that their career wouldn't suffer. I would be surprised if the practice wasn't still alive and well.

How do you think pre-nups work?

Allegedly Christie Brinkley's ex-hubby signed a non-disclosure agreement and he HAS been bad mouthing her lately. So she's taking him to court over the money for it.

She obviously didn't have a lawyer who made him sign over his children's children's inheritance and any future monies he might make. So he might have felt it worth bad-mouthing her to the tabloids for the momentary pleasure it gave him.

I have seen articles where people are about to release a tell-all book and people have taken them to court ahead of time, to get those portions edited out. The monetary damages pretty much cancel out any profit and personal satisfaction the person writing the book might receive.

Next up on ET! Tom Cruise and John Travolta spotted holding hands in Maui. :lmao:
:lmao: That was my first thought today...Tom and John...when I was out and got my CNN "breaking news" email.
As far as the timeline with Suri's birth...Katie was dating and engaged to Chris Klein for five years. They broke up around what, March? Then she dated Josh Hartnett for a bit after that split. And then she's all of sudden with Tom, engaged and pregnant by the end of April? The timing is quite convienent, isn't it.;)
She couldn't be pregnant at the end of April, if Suri was born the following April. UNLESS that's why Katie's mother was apparently there with Katie weeks before Suri's alleged birth, and not when Suri was allegedly born. So maybe Suri was born in January and they faked an April birthdate? I actually knew someone who did that...changed the date of his and his wife's child's birthday to cover for the fact that they weren't married at the time of conception.
Unless you are part of a religion which denies homosexuality and you have to jump on couches to prove you are in love with a woman. :rolleyes1 )
Awesome line.

One can truely hope that in the pre-nup, Katie was wise enough to have it written in that in the event of divorce, that she maintains physical custody of Suri or she spills the beans on who daddy really is.

YES YES YESSSSS!!!! I was thinking the same thing!!!!

One more shred of hope I had for humanity has fallen away.

 Just don't marry anyone jumping on couches while they profess their undying love for you. You'll be all right. :thumbsup2

Where is CathrynRose? :confused3 I PMed her a few hours ago. No response.

:scratchin You gals don't think she jumped in front of the Sci van that was attempting to abduct Katie, when she made her escape with Suri, do you? Who was on watch last night, for when Katie gave the signal she wanted an extraction?

Scientlology was her breaking point. She is worried for Suri.

Wow. After watching that clip of Tom talking about Scientology, I'd be worried for Katie and Suri too. There was an intensity that was disturbing in the way that he spoke, it gave me creepy chills. He's insane I think, seriously. Wow. Thank God Katie is getting OUT. Hopefully she has the power to keep her beautiful girl away as well because I think he's freaking unstable. What a weird dude.
