Larger seats = Fewer seats = fewer people on that plane. This means everyone pays more to fly.

Simple - if the airline makes the seats bigger that means LESS seats on the plane - which will be each seat has to cost MORE.

What is wrong with calling fat people fat? Would you rather they be called gluttons, obese, weight challenged?

I would never call fat people pigs, revolting, gross, fatties etc.

I am not going to start calling fat people fluffy or pooh-sized.

Don't pass out or anything, but I agree with you.. I prefer to use the term "people/person of size" because I know that people are sensitive about their weight, but that's just "my" thing.. I can't control the terminology that others use..

Some people also use "Pooh-sized"..

Why because it horribly embrassing for this man, I have been in his postion not in the plane thing, in amusment parks being told to get out that I was to big to fit. It would seem like it would better to come up with a way to accomdate all passanger then alienate them. Once you embrass a someone it really hard for them to go back

ok, the Severely Obese man who weighs 400 lbs. could

A.) Get medical treatment to help him lose weight
B.) Make sure of the airline's policy before flying

ONE thing that has not been mentioned is...let's say that a lot of 400lb. people want to board a plane and they all get one seat...do you know what else happens in that case? The flight uses more fuel.

It doesn't seem like that would make a difference, but I bet it does, thats part of why extra luggage is getting a fee on a lot of airlines, because it adds weight = using more fuel.

Ok, so let's say they go out of their way to acoommodate 400 lb. people, then someone comes along who's 500 lbs...and what happens they want to be accommodated?

Because fat people are fat just like skinny people are skinny, short people are short, tall people are tall, bald people are bald and disabled people are disabled. We are what we are and the only choices we have in life are to accept it or change it. Sometimes there is an option sometimes the former is all we have. I have found the only people who usually complain about being labeled any of those things are people who have some sort of shame for what they are, and that is sad.

I agree but get ready for the flaming. You will soon hear how it wasn't his fault and you are a terrible person for feeling this way. I do all the time. Maybe not so much that he should be embarrassed or ashamed but that if he wants to fly in one seat it is time to lose the weight.

From what I gathered, he needed 2 seats, because he wouldn't fit into one seat, and there was only one seat left. Should they have asks other passengers not to take the flight? Put him with the luggage? I don't see what the airline could've done to get him to his destination.

In this case I would consider it a safety issue. If you don't fit properly on a ride, and the sealtbelt of lap bar doesn't hold you in, you could get hurt.

If the man in question doesn't fit into his seat, then he needed to get another one if it was available. If not, then he shouldn't ride.

I'm glad I'm not really really fat and if I was, I would be seeking more extreme ways to make myself less so. Why not call it what it is? It's not a derogatory term, it's called factual, or do you prefer the term obese???

That's just being the word police. There are also short people who want to be called vertically challenged, bald people who want to be called follicly challenged, and disabled people who want to be called differently abled.

There is a difference between the factual statement that someone is fat in a context that their weight matters (like in this article) and walking up to someone in the street for no reason and pointing at them while laughing and calling them fat. In this article the weight matters so it isn't an unnecessary observation.

Words are just words and the value you put on them are up to you and shouldn't be projected onto everyone else. I'm short and don't care if someone calls me short. I don't base my self worth or self value on what others think of me, I base it on what I think of myself. Because I am not ashamed of who or what I am the word has zero effect on me. It is just a factual statement, no more and no less.

Fat person here. 5' 2" 260 pounds. Yes, I'm fat. As far as Pooh-Sized, I prefer Ursula as I'm more Ursula than Pooh. If you're going to infringe on other people's space than get 2 seats. I had to fly for work last year and I am very respectful of other people's space. However, should we be required to buy an extra seat if we have our child with us and our in a row with 3 seats and therefore only using 3 seats?

For us it's a moot point as we drive everywhere. We flew when DD was 18mos old and one leg of the trip didn't go so well so we swear we won't fly until the kids are over 18. We love to drive and spend the time together as a family. We leave for WDW on the 3rd of December and will arrive on the 6th taking time to stop in Charlotte NC to visit family on the way down.

As far as rides, I go on everything. I don't emabarass easily (I'm a mom). DP and I have learned not to sit on the same side of the boat in "Small World". As far as airlines, yes, EVERYONE should be respective of each other's space. As far as being fat, I think it's in attitude. Some people may judge me just by looking at me. I work full time to support my family, I shovel my driveway, I walk my dog and I play with my kids. I'm a human being and quite frankly not everyone is going to like me. It's human nature.

And just because I'm excited IN 10 DAYS I'LL BE IN DISNEY WORLD!!! WOO HOO!!! and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

i'm not my ideal healthy weight, as Wii likes to remind me, but i still have a little room on both sides of my seat on an airplane. I recently had to sit next to a rather large man who spilled onto my side. I wasn't grossed out by his fat, but I didn't want my body rubbing up against some man's body on an airplane. I had to lean over into the aisle for 2.5 hours.

Fat is fat. I'm about 30lbs overweight, and that 30lbs is fat.

Weight does not equal size, we have all seen people who have their weight in their hips not their tummy. The only way to solve this, is the way they have their carryon policy an exact size to fly one seat. If SW puts out anyone over # inches in the hips must buy two seats, then there is not an excuse or an employee making judgement calls. Just my two cents
