Tips for pick a pearl?

I swear next time I'm just gonna let someone else pick out my critter. Not that I have bad luck but I swear everyone else does better than me.

And granted I know this is outdated but to the person who asked if it was a fluke that the pearl ring broke, pearl jewelry is never really billed as great for rough wear. From what I've seen, most settings at kiosks or Japan require the pearl to be just glued in/on. Not the most reliable method plus you get a lot of people who are so keen to wear it that the glue hasn't cured and just a little jostling weakens the bond. Some pearls are what's called "half drilled" which is exactly that, they're drilled part way through so that something can be inserted and glued into them which provides a stronger setting. I've seen some claw settings but not many...and then of course the cage settings. Glue set rings are just always going to be the...shall we say risky option because the glue doesn't have anything to really grab onto on the pearl and your hands knock against stuff so much.

Lastly, as a disclaimer here...I know some people will say they've had awesome luck with glue set rings they've had for years. I'm not saying all will break, just that they're the most likely to.

thanks for that info!
i was the one that asked about it.

i do plan to do the pick a pearl but realize now, it has to set for a period first for the glue to dry.
or, i might want to check out the cage for it.

again, thanks.

interesting topic, as i never knew there were so many
selections- in deciding which one to pick.

so the ugly ones are the most popular? they all look pretty nasty
too me. wonder if they smell as bad as they looked? could it
matter how long or fuzzy the hairs are?

my wife /daughter did this last june when we visited aulani. actually
i wasn't too thrill spending money on this. it changed when my
daughter picked her first one. she started trembling with joy.
her first had 2 black pearls.( my wife informed me, she had been
planning/dreaming of this for a long time.) and liked some here,
she hope for a black one. so i told her she could pick until
she found a "white/normal" one or stop finding twins.
{ well she is a daddy's girl~} 4 more times she
chosen with all being "twins" & all black. rare~ :scared1:,right?!
i thought it was a "tourist trap",....so we let my son pick
one for her. while it wasn't a twin but it still was "black"..with a green
ring around it. and it was a large one....almost 10mm per the chart they
had. then my wife starting picking..she too got twins but they were
gold in color. but her next one was another large one, white
finally ( me= :yay: )...though it has a pink "ring" around the center.
close enough!

let me put it in another way, my wife ended up with 6 -silver necklaces
based on "how" much we spent.

kind of funny i think, that the ugly ones has the better "prize"
inside..sorta like the beauty & beast lesson? pixiedust:

ps, there are no words that can described how happy this
made her, is why i posted. it caught me totally off guard
& made a really special memory.

I can't wait to have a go when we are there in feb. I can't think of a nicer girlie souvenir to bring home :cloud9:!!! Make a change from cars and boys toys lol:rotfl2:

We did it again 2 weeks ago when we were there and DD got a 7.5mm beautiful pearl and I got twin 6mm! AWESOME!

My children lol. 6 3/4, 7 1/4 and 7 1/2

My dd loves doing this. When we went in 2010 for her high school graduation present, she and I each picked an ugly oyster with the plan being to have the pearls set into a piece of jewelry for her to take as she went off to college. We both got twins. Hers were pinkish and mine were creamy all roughly the same size around 7mm. She put one of hers and one of mine into a lovely necklace. When DH and I go back in March we are going to have the other two pearls set into a ring for me. DD just did this again in November and got a 8mm white that she had set into a very simple ring. Her oyster was nothing special - just the first one to catch her eye. She adores it and both pieces seem to be holding up really well. And she wears them often as she loves pearls.
